October 2, 201410 yr never ending sandy - ugh! TRANSIT Sandy tunnel repairs to limit LIRR capacity for 2 years, Amtrak says By ALFONSO A. CASTILLO / NEWSDAY October 2, 2014 Amtrak repairs to its superstorm Sandy-damaged East River tunnels will force the LIRR to use one fewer tube to and from Penn Station for two years, officials said Wednesday. The project is expected to cost at least $328 million and shut down two tubes, each for one year at a time. The work, which won't begin for more than a year, will cause "an appreciable reduction in capacity" at Penn Station during rush hours, Amtrak vice president Stephen Gardner said. more: http://www.amny.com/transit/sandy-tunnel-repairs-to-limit-lirr-capacity-for-2-years-amtrak-says-1.9457765

October 24, 201410 yr Author I love press release because you can quote the whole thing.... http://www.governor.ct.gov/malloy/cwp/view.asp?Q=555606&A=4010 October 24, 2014 GOV. MALLOY ANNOUNCES THREE NEW TRAIN STATIONS AS PART OF NHHS RAIL PROGRAM New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) Rail Program Logo Unveiled, Contract Awarded for Rebuilding of Three Stations Along NHHS (HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) today announced the start of construction for new train stations in Wallingford, Meriden and Berlin as part of the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) Rail Program. Governor Malloy also unveiled the logo for the new commuter service, which will be branded the “Hartford Line,” and will be prominently displayed at all Hartford Line stations and in marketing materials. “This is a major milestone for NHHS as it enters the construction phase at stations in Wallingford, Meriden and Berlin,” said Governor Malloy. “The NHHS Rail Program will not only offer more frequent, convenient and faster passenger rail service, but it will also cultivate significant benefits to communities along the rail line, including local economic and transit-oriented development activities at and around these stations, with the ultimate goal of increasing municipal revenue, creating jobs and improving the quality of life for residents and increasing our competitiveness as a state.” Station construction in Wallingford, Meriden and Berlin is scheduled to begin this fall and will be completed by the launch of enhanced rail service in late 2016. Improvements at these stations include high-level platforms (both sides of the track), overhead pedestrian bridge with new elevators and stair towers on both sides of the track to connect the two platforms, platform snow melt systems, electric vehicle charging stations, ticket vending machines and passenger information display systems, PA and high-resolution video surveillance systems, increased parking capacity and roadway access improvements, improved accessibility for the mobility impaired/ADA compliant and bicycle racks. “The renovation and expansion of Berlin’s train station will greatly help to revitalize the downtown area,” said House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-30). “I’m pleased to serve with a Governor who understands the need for economic development to reenergize our aging downtowns throughout the state.” “A new train station is a vital piece of our community's ongoing downtown revitalization,” said State Senator Danté Bartolomeo (D-13). “Improving rail access to New Haven, Hartford, and Springfield will help draw commuters and their families to Meriden, helping to attract local businesses. I am enthusiastic about how this new station will play into the many exciting changes that I and the rest of Meriden's legislative delegation have worked to bring about and am hopeful that we still have some time to address the issue of bathroom facilities.” “I thank Governor Malloy for his support of this construction project that will ease the burden on our overcrowded highways,” said State Rep. Emil Altobello (D-82). “Providing crucial transportation alternatives is key to the revitalization of these municipalities.” “This investment in providing additional transportation options is welcomed with open arms,” said State Rep. Cathy Abercrombie (D-83). “This project will have a positive impact on decreasing congestion on our roads and easing the daily drive for commuters.” “We have been waiting for construction to get started and are extremely excited to see it underway,” said State Rep. Hilda Santiago (D-84). “Not only will it help to generate jobs and economic development, but it will help reduce the carbon footprint of vehicles on our state’s highways.” “This is a major investment in the economic future of towns in our area,” said State Rep. Mary Mushinsky (D-85). “I thank Governor Malloy for his steadfast support of commuter rail service, which will revitalize the heart of Wallingford.” “I look forward to the upcoming improvements at the Wallingford train station and hope this revitalization creates a better opportunity for locals to travel and draws visitors to our downtown area - supporting our local small businesses,” said State Rep. Vincent Candelora (R-86). Funded through the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act (PRIIA) created under President Barack Obama in 2008, and State of Connecticut bonds proceeds, the NHHS Rail Program will provide significant new regional passenger rail service options as a key component of a robust and vibrant multi-modal regional transportation system. The station construction contract was awarded to Judlau Construction of New York at a value of $58.8 million. “Today’s groundbreaking ceremony, coupled with unveiling of the Hartford Line brand, solidifies our State’s commitment to expanding state and regional passenger rail service,” said ConnDOT Commissioner James Redeker. “Once the new Hartford Line service is launched, the frequency of weekday round trip trains will increase from 6 to 17 trains between New Haven and Hartford with up to 12 trains continuing north to Springfield, Massachusetts. This will greatly enhance travel options between these communities and will serve as the backbone for regional rail service within and beyond New England.” Scheduled to launch in late 2016, the enhanced rail service between New Haven and Springfield, with portions of the line from New Haven to Windsor, will be double tracked, and will provide faster, frequent and more reliable passenger service both locally and regionally. December 20, 201410 yr progress on 2nd ave via amny: Second Avenue Subway's first phase is three-quarters of the way done By DAN RIVOLI December 18, 2014 The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway is three-quarters of the way done now that construction crews have finished the shell for the 86th Street station, the MTA announced Thursday. Excavating the bedrock, installing concrete lining and utility work took more than three years and $332 million to finish, bringing the entire first phase of the Second Avenue subway to 76% complete. The station now needs heating, ventilation and air conditioning work, elevator and escalators and architectural finishes. MTA officials this week said the new subway line that will bring the Q train up Second Avenue to 96th Street is still slated to be ready for service December 2016.
December 22, 201410 yr mega-tod project in harrison, nj around rebuilt path train station and red bulls soccer arena: Luxury development eyed in Harrison near PATH station, Red Bulls Arena Print Rose Duger | For The Jersey Journal By Rose Duger | For The Jersey Journal on November 28, 2014 at 8:18 AM Redevelopment is chugging along in Harrison, where developers recently announced a new project to construct six buildings with 1,000 residences in the town's Riverbend District. Advance Realty and DeBartolo Development, LLC will partner to construct the mixed-use project adjacent to the Harrison PATH station, with construction slated to begin early next year. The project's first phase will include 286 luxury rental units and a parking deck, along with indoor and outdoor amenities, according to Michael Sommer, managing director of development for Advance Realty. Located at the intersection of Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard and Cape May Street, the first phase could be completed by early 2016, Sommer added. The total buildout will include 20,000 square feet of retail space and a hotel, as well as 1,000 luxury apartments, Sommer confirmed. "What's unique about Harrison is that we have 35 acres, which is almost unheard of in an urban area," Sommer said. "We're really starting with a clean slate and have the ability to react to market demands." Harrison's building boom has accelerated in recent years as the economy has improved. Abandoned factory complexes have been replaced with several new residential developments, along with a Westin hotel, retail space and the 25,000-seat Red Bull Arena. Adjacent to Riverbend, the Harrison PATH station is undergoing a $256 million renovation to modernize the facility and expand its capacity. The new PATH station, slated to open in 2017, is a big draw for potential tenants, Sommer said. "It's almost cliche these days, but it's all about location, location, location," he explained. "What's key in this case is the fact that Harrison is a 20-minute PATH ride to downtown, nine minutes to Journal Square and two minutes to Newark." more: http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index.ssf/2014/11/luxury_development_eyed_in_har.html

January 14, 201510 yr Author Yep, bipartisan support for multimodal transportation in the state that developed North East and North Central Ohio.... New train stations coming to New Haven, Hartford Lines By Mark Davis, WTNH Chief Political Correspondent Published: January 12, 2015, 4:00 pm Updated: January 12, 2015, 6:02 pm HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– The Governor cleared the tracks Monday to make way for several new train stations on what will become known as the Hartford Line. The new New Haven to Hartford to Springfield commuter rail line is slated to start running next year. The Governor admits he wants everything, bigger highways, more trains, and more buses, and he has a plan to convince you to pay for it. The 1870’s vintage train station in Windsor is one of several that will be getting modern enhancements for when the New Haven to Hartford to Springfield commuter line starts running in late 2016. The funding given the okay Monday includes a location study for a new train station in Hamden, plus stations in North Haven, Newington, West Hartford, and Enfield. The new Hartford Line will feature 22 commuter trains per day stopping at all those new and refurbished stations on the 62-mile corridor between New Haven and Springfield. New stations will also be added on the New Haven Line in Orange and Bridgeport, plus enhancements to the Merritt Seven station on the Danbury line. January 17, 201510 yr you go political jersey brothers in arms - godspeed! Jackson: N.J. lawmakers present a united front for new rail tunnel Quote: With both houses of Congress about to be controlled by Republicans, whose hard-liners denounce expensive federal projects as wasteful pork and have banned lawmakers from earmarking funds for pet projects, a bipartisan delegation from New Jersey is gearing up to win support for a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River. Both Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat, and Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, a Republican, said they are hopeful they can get a commitment at least to start Amtrak’s Gateway project when Congress takes up a multiyear transportation financing bill next spring. Frelinghuysen, of Harding, said he thought the chances of some success are “pretty good.” Menendez, of Paramus, said he was “cautiously optimistic.” “I’m not saying it’ll be the whole kit and caboodle … but once we are committed to the project, then we have a better chance to ensure its totality,” Menendez said. Rail access to New York City has taken on a new urgency following Amtrak’s revelation last year that the existing two-track tunnel, built 104 years ago, will fail within 20 years because of damage from Superstorm Sandy flooding. Before then, delays will become common for Amtrak and NJ Transit, which uses Amtrak’s Hudson tunnel, because of periodic closures to stabilize it. Gateway calls for a new two-track tunnel under the river and other construction, including new or rebuilt bridges in the Meadowlands, to provide four tracks between Newark and New York City. The next few months will be critical in determining whether the project moves off the drawing board, because Congress faces a May deadline for a new transportation bill. Governor Christie won praise from fiscal conservatives, and criticism from many planners and commuters, more than four years ago when he gave up a $3 billion federal funding commitment by halting NJ Transit’s construction of a new tunnel, known as Access to the Region’s Core, or ARC. At the same time, he has said he supports a new tunnel, under the right conditions. “The governor is open to a plan that is well-engineered but also fair and equitable to New Jersey, with costs shared among all benefiting jurisdictions,” said Steve Schapiro, spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Transportation. February 20, 201510 yr Author Miami-Orlando train track may host Tri-Rail commuter trains to downtown ALFONSO [email protected] 02/19/2015 7:38 PM 02/19/2015 9:21 PM Tri-Rail, the commuter service that has been running trains on the CSX track west of Interstate 95 between Palm Beach County and Miami since late last century, is now working on a major new plan: to run trains into downtown Miami beginning in late 2016 or early 2017. Jack Stephens, executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, said the plan calls for running the trains on a stretch of the same track that would be used by a planned Miami-Orlando passenger service. The plan requires construction of a spur connecting the CSX track that Tri-Rail uses to the Florida East Coast Railway track. Though the spur is slated to be built by the Florida Department of Transportation, Tri-Rail is seeking an additional $69 million — money that would be needed within eight weeks to mesh with the construction schedule set for the Miami-Orlando service, known as All Aboard Florida. The money would be used to build Tri-Rail train platforms plus other enhancements such as ticket-vending machines.
