EC said there should be another cleanup coming very soon. Stay posted.

Send me a PM whenever you find out the date. I may not be able to make it on the forum the next couple days.

I am working on getting 2 places ready to prep. I am awaiting a go ahead on one...and a call back on another party very interested. So, I would predict that within the next week...we will need to do some impromptu cleaning. I will give the word soon.. Please stay tuned to this thread for the info. Please watch for updates...

Thanks!

Just wanted to throw out a quick update with this project...  We're working on three more spaces. One, behind the Hallee Building (in it, actually) will be the next one going. There has been some painting going on for preparation. It would be good to get something going near the dead zone in the middle of Euclid. That area is a focus, as well as some random areas of which we are making contact. Statler has said they want to participate as well. And, there is interest near Star Plaza. Thanks for all who have been participating in any way, or  offering the art for use. There will be use for it, just sit tight.. It is a matter of getting the places to agree..then get them cleaned, then ready to be placed wit the work. Everyone can even help with this by simple word of mouth and expressing support for the project. Word gets around. Imagine being able to walk down Euclid in the meanwhile near dead zones and instead of seeing emptiness and filthy windows, you see some color...something interesting to look at...and perhaps even some light at night if possible.

Thanks!

Hey EC - How about on the Superior side of the Hyatt Hotel where the mens' suit shop used to be?  There is LOTS of prime window space there.  I believe it is managed by the Chartwell Group.

^ I'll look into that. Thanks!

327 - Your Inbox is full!!!!!!!

For anyone else interested, it looks like we've got the Halle building lined up for tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.  PM me if you're interested.

Some fantastic artwork has gone into the Huron side of the Halle's building.  Stop by and check it out, folks!

Can someone get a picture so we can post? Got a call today from the Prospect Bottoms-Up property. They are interested in this too.

I am going to be sending a press release out about this very soon. Also, any volunteer cleaners are needed immediately to get some work done during regular hours. Please message me.

A couple more places should be ready soon. Had another person call me who also offered to help send the program to some building owners with space for this project. So far...be watching The Park Building, Hallee's, 1223 Prospect, Star Plaza, and the Statler. Hopefully a press release will draw more interest. So far, not bad for going at this in a month. Great group opf volunteers here.

Doc and X are doing a great job preparing the storefronts. A press release should go out this week..and if anyone gets a chance...  go on Huron Rd downtown and pass the Hallee building and see the window with the Jerry Schmidt art. Looks great, especially at night...shows the obvious difference in having nothing in the window.

We cleaned the old Bottoms Up space (Prospect and Bolivar) yesterday.  Man was that a chore - lots of windows.  smiley-sleep019.gif  Took us 3 hours even with help from the building owner (who was incredibly friendly, by the way)!  At any rate, that building is really cool.  EC, do we know what's going in there yet?  That'll be a big display!

More people need to come and join X and me!  327 should be starting soon - you all know you wanna help :-D!

Thanks to both of you....I know that turned out to be a big one--more than anticipated... Yes, let's recruit more help... 327...Where are you! I know he said he had a wedding... We will make sure there is some extra help if there is ever anything like that again. I tried to get Andrew to help but he could not on Saturday, but is available for the future.

I would have even helped myself had I not had the Edgewater sweep on the same day. :-( This one is finished. It is now up to Vicky, Jack, and company to load in the art...  I am still waiting to hear what a possible Ohio Shawnee Indians art display would consist of in one of the future windows.

Yes, that is a swell building. $500,000 is the asking price!

Rosemary was actually very moved to see this enthusiasm for this project, and she will be a great reference.

Thank You again. The work IS being noticed--and I think when we see the outcomes of the windows, we'll all be pleased. I will see about getting some nice photos taken of them so people here on the forum can see.

$500,000?  That's it?!?  Wow!  I mean, I can't afford that, but wow!

Yes, and it is tempting to make an offer. That is a great spot. Love it. The art work installations on that property and the Star Plaza one will begin this week. They were actually started already...its just about installing it.

Yes, pics please!  Would love to see the work.  I would help if I wasn't 2000 miles to the west!

Attention! Does anyone want to volunteer a decent camera to begin taking photos of the completed storefronts so we can see these online? I have asked and should be able to get someone, however, they're full with their installation of the art. Who would like to be this expedition's official photographer? Message me or post here.

These seem to be in my neck of the woods, I can try to swing by at some point today... halle building and the old bottoms up?

Cleaned with art installed:

Halle Building, on Huron

Park Building, on Public Square

Cleaned, not sure if art's installed yet [edit: not installed as of noon today]:

"Bottom's Up", Prospect/Bolivar

"Ranstad", on Star Plaza

The Prospect and Star Plaza spots will be finished off Friday.

I'll wait to post until those are done...

Ok, Thanks... In the meanwhile, if you want to snap the other two....  they're done.

Just a quick update with the storefront window project...  Rains have delayed the installation of art on the next two places. They were supposed to be installed today, but I have not gotten by there today to see if they were......And, it was spotty with rain. The truck that the art is to be transported on is an open cargo truck, so wind/rain could damage it and Jack is trying to avoid that. It will get done.

Just another note on this...  they are getting done. Same scenario I mention above has delayed things a bit. But, it would be nice to get some photos snapped when they're finished.

let me know when the other two displays are finished... now that summer is done I don't meander in that direction unless there is a reason.  :)  At any rate here is the display on the Huron Rd. side of the Halle Building taken a week or so ago.

Thanks McCleve...Great photo. That stay lit at night too. There will be two more finished this week... The Prospect one and Star Plaza window. Weather and help has delayed things a bit for about a week. But for sure, things will be done this week. We released a press release...and I am able to handle any other contacts our volunteers pass along for new sites.

^North Collinwood's own... JERRY SCHMIDT's work!!!  I'll go by his sculpture garden on Waterloo one of these days coming up and take some updated photos.  Thanks for the pic!

Thanks for posting that, McCleveland!

X you guys got those windows so squeaky clean I had to stand to the side or all the picture would have been was my reflection.  :)

Awww, you didn't want yourself all over the internets?

^ They're doing a fantastic job!

This is the display on Star Plaza next to Ligett Stashower:

And these are from the "Bottoms Up" Building on Prospect.  This place truly looks fantastic at night when all of the lights are on to show this display off. Definitely the best, and most notable this far.  Well done guys.

And damn... these windows are so clean you might mistake them for mirrors. :)

Big ups to all!!

Nice!  I hadn't made it over to Bottoms Up to see the display yet!  Unfortunately, the impending annual deep freeze will probably prohibit any more squeaky clean windows for a few months, but hopefully we'll keep things going!

These are the examples of better pride and stewardship in storefronts I would like to see here. Great job! It speaks for itself.

I love the idea of getting artists to paint murals of the inside of a bustling cafe or a shoe store or something, so you get a bit of a feel for how it would look it was a successful business!

Reminds me of 18th & Vine in Kansas City where commercial redevelopement is progressing a lot slower than hoped.  Much of the storefronts are painted over with facades of vibrant businesses.

Latest on the window displays. Within a couple weeks, there should be more windows/storefronts cleaned and filled up with some spectacular art with the help of some UO'ers and local artists. I was even thinking eventually, a map of downtown can be placed on a small card, and when enough windows are full...  the cards can serve as a self guided outdoor art walking window tour. There has been some art placed at the Statler... Some art of Super heroes... The Spiderman painting is really nifty...and the other window there will be filled soon. Three windows at the Chesterfield Apartments will be filled soon as well as a place on Prospect Ave. Not biting off than small amounts at a time....  That's all for now...  Anyone wanting to take photos and post them is appreciated. Watch for the transformations!

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't have any photos yet... But let me just give an update on some of these windows....  Projects we are working on:  finishing Statler.... The Chesterfield and will do 811 Prospect. I have contacted May Company and a few others. One person I contacted about doing this is very interested but cannot comment on it until his higher ups return.

I think we are all in for a treat at The Chesterfield. This is going to be a 3 window display that will fill the emptiness on that part of 12th and will look absolutely awesome! Myself and a couple participants have discussed eventually creating a sort of outdoor window display art walk---but would like to get a few more going first. Of course, ideally, we'd all like to see empty spaces be utilized with something of need and quality, but hey, in the meantime...what a great way to take advantage of the times. With the glut of empty storefronts and art collecting dust in storage, there is no need to have thew windows remain empty.

We came up quickly with something like the following, which will be placed on those little map cards such as used in the Tremont Art Walk or other advertising.

Welcome to Downtown Cleveland’s  “OUTDOOR,  SELF-GUIDED--STOREFRONT WINDOW SHOPPING--ART WALK!” A unique experience deserves quite a name like that! Please follow the path listed on the map to find showcase windows in many  prominent/historic buildings featuring the art of many local artists. On behalf of the participating property owners and artists, we appreciate your support---so, if you like the art, OR, would like to purchase any specific work, please make a direct connection at the contact information provided in the windows. We’d love to hear from you and what  art you liked best about this walk! You can also phone XXX-XXX-XXXX for comments or questions!

Anyway, I will eventually collect some photos for this project, but if McCleveland or even Cluless-Ohio can be so kind as to take some to post HERE, that would be appreciated by many who have helped out so much with this project. Lastly, I am working on getting that 14th and Bolivar exhibit fully lit. (across from Gray's Armory)

Here are some storefront windows that EC asked me to photograph.

Thanks for posting those, Clueless!

This program really is brilliant.  Thank you, EC, for making it happen.

Update: Chesterfield was worked on today for a changeover in art. Statler is next...then another at Halle's.  There is also a host of properties interested in having this done, but with limited volunteers it just takes a little longer.

However, we have an enthusiastic core group committed to making this happen...and I would like to make it a goal to, as much as possible, fill in the dead zones along Euclid with generally cleaned-up windows/surrounding frame facades...walks...then a new art installation in as many as possible. A couple of the artists rally like the idea of a window being a tribute to the department store heyday era along Euclid. If this goes well, such could inspire a larger mural in the future.

We are happy to report too...that some larger properties seem to be expressing interest...so, if anyone wants to help in anyway--OR, if you are a property owner/manager who would like to have a makeover done to your property windows-anywhere in Cleveland and not just downtown, please contact me. We are also trying to get more photos. If, in the meanwhile anyone wants to take some and post, feel free to do so. This simple idea can really change the look of downtown.

Thanks....

Hello, I'm Joan and have been assisting Robert with Cleveland Storefront Art.  One of my pet peeves has been empty storefronts.  I started contacting people on my own in April when I came upon the Artist Review Today Magazine article about Vicky Poole and Robert's endeavor. How serendipitous.

Since then I've been calling property owners, leasing agents and most recently galleries.  The responses have mostly been positive.  I'm definitely encouraged by the sincerity of all concerned.  One storefront at a time!

I want to thank the photographers from this forum for their work used in our flickr group:

Quick update here.....No photo yet, but 1104 Prospect...complete. We can get a photo soon, but if anyone wants to snap one and post, feel free. There are also more artists who have expressed interest in participating in this---and I am still working on promoting a couple themes in particular for a couple windows. More windows to come.

This project is just a slow process to try and get these cleaned properly, displays installed and coordinate everyone's schedule. I think slowly this will gain the eyes that will ask.. Who is doing this? That would be nice! Joan, above, has been working a lot to get more spaces secured. Help in cleaning and prep work from those who can be available in day hours to do a prep work plan for the windows before displays are installed would help greatly!

Thank You!

Please forgive me for the gigumbo photo!  I can't figure how to remove!  :wtf:

Can someone try and fix this or let her remove this photo and try again? I don't want to post it for concern of it doing the same thing. Thanks.  This window turned out nicely and you wouldn't be able to tell from the size. Oh well....nevermind, I fixed it....now can someone delete the one above?

SuperMegaPhoto removed.  I think the window looks great.  Thanks for your hard work, Joan, and welcome to UrbanOhio.

Nice work again!
