I'll be there.

My cousin is coming along too and wants to know if someone will sign her off on service hours for her high school.

^ I can arrange for that. Thank you for your help!

I was planning on sending out an invitation to all of my facebook friends in addition to whatever EC plans to do.

HeII, if only one person of the 700 agrees to come ill be happy with that.

^ Yes, posting this on pages like that is a great help. Remember, for those just coming on this thread...scroll back to get the time and day...  I know you're smart enough to figure that out... But just making sure everyone knows where the date/time is. It would be good to keep this thread...and get enough people to do this weekly...some can show up one week..and others can show up other weeks...  If there is enough people...someone will always show up. Thank you...

By the way, this could evolve into a group that helps other with their clean-ups as well.

I will be there, and this cleanup should certainly evolve into other projects which need our help.

Oh.. Just noticed the extra thread....    I just wanted to remind people that I have a limited supply of bag/gloves. Any extra contributions are appreciated! :-)

Good job guys and gals :) You are really making a difference for the park! Let me know when the next one is, I may be interested in coming up.

We're looking at keeping it the 4th saturday of every month. Next months would be 26 September.

^ Yes, please check the other thread for news on this as well just in case. The "Who Wants To Help Clean The Shoreline" one in City Discussion. Also, if there are times I cannot make it...please, gang, go at it....  I think this will catch on.

I also had a long chat with State ODNR H.Q about getting better maintenance on this park regarding litter control......

I made many suggestions--and the person I spoke with agreed totally. I also spoke with park office management and I did not get the enthusiasm they should be exuding. I talked about that with HQ as well..and HQ agreed that maintenance needs to make it a par of their daily routing, especially during cutback times to walk the paths and get all litter within eyeshot. To keep the parks as litter free as possible is...and becomes a number one priority even when staff is cut back. This is not happening at this park. I was told they need to get out of their vehicles more to get a connection with the park that can only be gained on foot---so they will see the issues close up. It is hard to see this from being in the vehicle, often, as it is like a cocoon.

I am pushing to re-instate the 'walk the park daily' policy with their maintenance staff. Some calls to ODNR requesting the same would help.

Thank You All..

Look forward to seeing you again. I also need a sort of assistant organizer. I am hoping this can be Hubz.. Where are you, man!  :-)

I thought I would make the announcement now about the September 26th Edgewater Park clean-up. 11:30 AM  to 1:30 PM, Saturday, September 26th. I will have some bags, but you may want to bring some as well...Those of you who I gave gloves to last time, just bring those again too. Let's see a show of hands...and then we will just meet at the same place.

Also, I am following up on correspondence with an ODNR contact at HQ about improving these conditions at the park. Btw...Hubz, could you bring a small rake...flat shovel?

Lastly, there is someone with DCA Advocates who is also doing a clean-up at the river in The Flats on Sunday, September 20th, so, this would be great to get both of these going back to back....to establish a presence. (Anyone wanting details on The Flats one, please PM me)

Like eating healthy and staying fit is a lifestyle change to adopt and not a 'now and then fad'... So is helping to plant the seeds of a non-littering mentality/lifestyle--it is an ongoing lifestyle and job to keep after it---So, with that, I hope to see you there again..and some new people as well!

Afterwards, we can grab some refreshments at a local establishment if anyone's game!

Thank You!

Mayday, if you are reading this... Did Gypsy ever call you back?

EC.  I need to give you credit.  Not only did you "talk the talk" you actually organized and executed!

Hats off!

Why Thank You, MTS!  :-) It makes it easy when we are supported by a cast who cares...

Alright, It's time for another cleanup! I've talked to Robert and we are going to schedule the next Edgewater Park cleanup for Saturday, Oct. 3rd at 11:00am. Save this date in your calenders NOW people. We want enough volunteers to be able to work on the upper and lower portions of the park simultaneously. The cleanup will only take a couple of hours and will have a tremendous impact on the park.

hahaha thanks May, corrected

No, there were scheduling conflicts. The new date is Oct. 3. Hope you can still make it!

I don't think I can make that one, but I will let you know when we get closer to October 3rd.

Hi everyone... Here is an update on these issues...

Yes, this was a last moment tweak, but our regularly scheduled programming will resume!

Just an update as promised...

I spoke with a higher ranking person at ODNR HQ the other day for over an hour. I have been continuously following up with him about improving litter conditions at Edgewater State Park. It would help if others contacted Glenn Cobb at ODNR-Division of Parks/Recreation to express concern too. It was suggested rangers do what they used to do, and should be doing...and that is....to get out of their cars, walk the park, the trails.....get connected from it and out of their auto cocoon to see what needs to be done.

We discussed making a complete park walk through to get litter a routine part of maintenance. When they mow the grass, they should not mow over litter. Glenn Hobbs at ODNR suggested all the above and I agreed. These are not sweeping changes...they are merely things that should have been done all along, that somewhere along the way, complacency has set in. Glenn agreed that they do not need a huge staff to be able to achieve this.

Additionally, we talked about park rules and regulation enforcement on quality of life issues. I suggested that law enforcement be more aware of inappropriate behavior in the park from the transient crowd, for lack of a better way to describe it........those bringing in fast food and dumping it all over the park, or those who rudely turn up their audio systems so loudly that the entire park and beyond can hear it, motorcycles gunning engines with ear splitting noise. Those who live in the neighborhood and share this park, respect the tranquil oasis within the city they are... do not do not act like this. Those who respect these natural resources do not behave like that either. Much of the litter comes from such a small herd of visitors, and Glenn agreed that they need to be cited according to park rules/state laws on public lands. All... again, illegal activity in violation of park rules and regulations. Glenn would like to see these issues better dealt with. He spoke extensively on a concern for this...and cleanliness as a priority.

Lastly, they hired a new park manager there, and Glenn said that he will put him in touch with this group who wants to help with the park clean-ups. Now is a good time to get involved with this because we have some fresh blood managing the park, and out with the existing management.

That's all for now... Let's keep the momentum going so we can all be proud of this place just as much in person as in pictures.

October 3rd 11: 00 AM to 1:00 PM  Please bring friends!

May Day, Did Gypsy call back about refreshments?

Thank You!

October 3rd 11: 00 AM to 1:00 PM................Please can we get a head count? I hope as many as possible will participate.

Thanks!

I'll be there. Last time was a lot of fun. Got to meet a bunch of new people, both UO members as well as park patrons who were interested in what we were doing. I'm sure the park looks awesome this time of year too.

I'm going to try my best to make it but i cant guarantee i'll be there

Thanks! Spread the word...

Would love to make it (haven't had a chance yet) but I will be in Pittsburgh for a wedding.  Please continue to keep us informed though!

Just trying to get an idea of who is coming tomorrow....  So far we have a few.... Who will join? Just post if you can.

No one other than Etheostoma and I are coming? LAMEEEEEEEEEE

Count me in.  I'm a sucker for peer pressure.

where are you at MayDay??? I'm calling you out

I am going to try and come. I am just getting over a flu/upper respiratory thing so no promises. it it is raining horribly, what is the plan?

Its never a good time...  So it may as well be tomorrow. 10 minutes...20...an hour...or more....or whatever anyone can helps. C'mon... this is once a month folks...  The time we spend typing, we could spend picking up a few things...  Calling once...calling twice....    SOLD! Come on out everyone!

Ok, just in case someone needs to call for details...call 330-393-4448

Thanks to the people that can make it out today.

11:00-1:00, call Etheostoma if you need details.

It was nice meeting Chris on the path. We did not see anyone else. I was really suprised how tranquil the paths are. We picked up 3 stuffed bags of trash before my gloves were fully soaked and deciding it was time for coffee. Drew the line at a dirty diaper. Maybe someone else got it.

^ Don't blame you, thanks for the hard work!

I might look a little peeked here, but I had not even hit the sewage outlet yet...

edit. pic removed too large!

Wait 'til you see the photos Hubz took. All I can say is everyone who came to this today worked their tails off. And if the photos to come do not send a disturbing message that we have a serious problem that needs immediate and regular attention, I don't know what else it will take. The photos and comments should be shared with ODNR, Councilmen such as Cimperman, Zone, etc....  The PD, The City, and so on.

I am contacting the state again to discuss new priorities and applying them on this first and foremost issue. I really encourage as many UO'ans to get on board with this to illicit some change...and especially some change in the business as usual lack of management/care for this part at the ODNR level.

When you get down and dirty like this and up close and personal to the issue, there is no denying that there is no more room for excuses for this kind of treatment of such a delicate and fragile resource-Our freshwater, our biggest asset! We want to give more access to the water, when those who have access to it now still do not know how to take care of it.

There is no Lone Ranger coming to save the day on this...  The Lone Ranger is YOU--all of us....and getting those at the top to start doing a better job in managing the problem on areas they should be focusing on, requires many of us to make them care about it. The discussion Chris and I had with a Ranger and park maintenance employee made it clear that we need some change in attitude.

If a city of 5 million like Sydney, with many walks of life visiting the beach, can leave virtually no traces of litter along their hundreds of miles of coastal area, then why can't we do it with a mile!? Maybe its time we adopt other cities philosophies which are working and good examples, or even the German model.

Sorry, but what we witnessed today was a pitiful disgrace and we must mend this problem. Say whatever, but we made a positive start. This day fired me up....

Many HUGE thanks to all who came out today. Let's keep it rolling!!!

Ok, I'm calm now.

Capital punishment for littering!

^ Tempting! I only wish we were that serious and passionate about how serious the problem is and how it is linked to so many others that people do not chose to understand. Some idiot in Australia threw down a smoldering cigarette butt near the bushland and it contributed to ravaging bush fires that destroyed the lives, properties of hundreds of people, wildlife, and cost untold millions in damage. This has been done purposefully sometimes...I certainly wouldn't give him a slap on the wrist, and they're not. Albeit, not as dramatic, but what we witness today, on a slower scale, left unabated, can cause severe problems in their own way, economically, socially, environmentally.

Btw...look forward to your helping next time.

If anyone never got a chance to watch this short video...check it out...  very compelling...

I want to thank everyone that came out on Saturday, the cleanup was VERY successful. I hope we can shed light on the condition on the park/beach and begin to change it. Sorry it took so long to posts these I wasn't sure how to do it.
