You guys are great for doing this.

I wonder if the county court program which pics up litter along the highways does any work in this and other parks?

Do we have a date set for the next clean up?

Well, this is basically what I was talking about in the new "How would you improve Cleveland?" thread, when I mentioned grasping a hold of improving basics first....  Keeping our beaches clean and parks...is a basic concept that this city has yet to grasp in unity. If they did, we would not tolerate this condition and demand much more. The city should look as good in person as it does in the photos.

Yesterday, I had another long talk with ODNR and we will be placed in touch with the new management at the park. I made a list of 10 factors they need to improve upon at this park--all very basic. The improvement starts with the staff being held more accountable and establishing a much more visual anti-littering policy and presence in the park. If anyone would like to hear the details of the discussion, just message me.

While many people may get sick of my rants on my posts about such stuff...I know no one likes to see our parks like this....sooo  Imagine how sick we all are of seeing conditions like the ones in the photos and how it does nothing positive for Cleveland's image/environment/economy.

If they (City/ODNR, Paper, etc) get more calls about this condition, it can only help the effort. Keeping this under control is an ongoing issue.

Next Clean Sweep.... Last Saturday in November... Bring a friend, a rake... Maybe we can do the lower part too. Share these photos as well so it is not out of sight/out of mind.

As I said before, you're doing good work.  I really dont mind you rants -- when they are on topic!  ;)

^^ Well, we will see how it goes. Maybe we can squeeze one more in. I will be in Australia for a couple months to three... this winter. I am staying in constant contact with the ODNR HQ and new park management. It would help if others wrote, phoned, or emailed their concerns nicely to Glen Cobb at ODNR, division of parks. He has been very receptive to getting some good change implemented at this park. I'll get the address posted.

Naturally, this is a high use park, so this beach deserves to be combed more than once a year! Yes...that's about all they do, which, besides people tossing them onto the ground on the street.....so they get washed into the storm drain.... is one reason we get more black and mild tips, etc..etc.. on the beach, than sand! The combing would get sooo much of this out of the sand. I believe we also found a poopie diaper.. Imagine having that squish between your toes on a warm summer day.

Thanks for sharing! :|

Oh god, I hope you all wore gloves. Those pictures look absolutely disgusting!

Yes, gloves were most definitely worn. I'd like to thank everyone for being so interested in the cleanups. I'm hoping we will be able to sneak one more before it gets crappy out, maybe at the end of this month.

Anyone wishing to write to ODNR-Division of Parks about improving this issue as seen in the photos. ( I wrote a 10 point focus list on items that would curb it) please write to Glenn Cobb at [email protected]

Thanks!

It might be helpful to others if you post your letter so that it can be used as a template.

I have been in contact with The Sierra Club about helping with clean-ups with Friends of Edgewater.

Pat McKenna, a contact for Sierra Club had this to say:

"We can post the clean-up on Saturdays in our newsletter starting next spring.  Our Nov/Dec is already in production and you won't be hosting the clean-up in Jan/Feb.  Please remind me in early February and we'll make sure we put something in the newsletter.

Pat"

Remember: Fourth Saturday  at 11:00 AM -- 1:00 PM

Ok gang....  Time to put away the politics and religion etc...and unite for a common good cause...and that is to show some TLC for our valued natural shoreline--what little of it exists--and meet for a couple hours of sweeping Edgewater Park. What better way than to work off the T-Giving celebration...AND, make a difference as well for the natural integrity of the lake!

Again, I am keeping in touch with the state and even local Sierra Club members to see if we can get new management to implement some ideas to foster a culture of anti-littering. That is another story, but for today, we need volunteers!  This will be the last sweep of the year 'til next Spring---as I will likely be in Sydney, Australia for the winter.

Soooo....  Everyone is invited to attend and it would be greatly appreciated. Photo takers are welcome and perhaps we can go grab refreshments afterwards.

Please bring some bags if you can and if I gave you gloves last time, better get those out as well! I will bring a rake/shovel for hard to snag things.

We will meet in the upper parking lot as mapped out at the top of the thread....on Saturday the 28th, at approximately 11:00 AM and work till 1:00 PM. My contact number is also at the top of the thread, but if you attend, please look around the parking lot to see a trunk of a car open and a couple people standing around...you can ask about the litter sweep and that will likely be us!  Don't leave if I am 10 minutes late or so...we will be there.

Hope to have a good turn out on this so we begin to establish a presence in the park as well--and lead by example!

Thank You,

Robert

^I was just in Cleveland this Saturday and the Saturday before that, but of coarse you decide to do the clean up the week that I am home for Thanksgiving! Maybe next year I will be able to make it.

I wont be able to make it on Saturday due to work, but hopefully you get a good turnout!

I was there recently as well and I agree. I really hope this can get started up again because I would love to participate! I don't want to see it looking badly when there are so many people willing to clean it up!

Received this message today:

The Friends of Edgewater State Park will meet Tuesday, April 20 at 5:30pm at Latitude 41N, 5712 Detroit Avenue. On the agenda: stable clean up, spring fundraiser, logo, membership recruitment, design competition for pavilion, monthly clean-ups. Hope to see you there.

If you can't make it, I'm sure they'd be happy if you contacted them to express interest and get added to their email list. :-)

If anyone's inclined to help out on the east side:

On Saturday April 24th, volunteers from Cleveland Jobs Corps, Arts Collinwood, Tri-C, Baldwin-Wallace College, Case Western Reserve University, and John Carroll University came together to clean and screen the Euclid Beach! It is only April and we collected over 150 pounds of trash! Some of our top trash items collected included plastic cigar tips with over 800 collected, plastic caps and pieces with over 300 collected, and plastic bags with over 150 collected!

With summer around the corner, we are going to need your help! Join the Euclid Beach Adopt-a-Beach Team this summer along with 7,000+ other volunteers across the Great Lakes as we tackle some of the toughest months of the year for beach and water quality!

Remember, our Great Lakes constitute over 1/5 of the earth's fresh surface water. Let’s take care of them while we still have the chance!

Our next beach visit will be on Saturday May 22nd from 10am-12pm at Euclid Beach Park!

So is there a cleanup tomorrow?  11am to 1pm, meeting at the upper parking lot?

It is the 4th Saturday of the month...

It would be nice if some were held in the afternoon as well. I really do want to help but work every Saturday until 12pm :/

  • 1 month later...

Sorry about the late announcement of the first event...BUT, I hope to see some of you attend the other one below!  The sweep.....  Let's help keep our shoreline clean!

Here are two opportunities to get involved at Edgewater Park in the next couple of weeks:

July 10th, 11am - 5pm. Treasure the Beach! Volunteers wanted to staff the FOESP table. Please contact Mandy [email protected]. Or just plan to attend the event: celebration of Clean Beaches Week, clean-up and kids activities. Meet near beach pavilion area. See attached flier.

July 17th, 11am-1pm. Clean-up. Informal small group clean-up held the third Saturday of the month. Bring a few trash bags and gloves (optional). PLEASE RSVP to Robert Carillio [email protected] so that he can let you know if the clean-up is canceled. Meet at small lot at upper park.

Happy Summer,

Mandy

Friends of Edgewater State Park

Does edgewater have an actual beach cleaner/screener machine?

something like this: http://www.cherrington.net/products_Detail.php?ID=4

If so, how often is it used on the beach itself?

EDIT:

Also, why aren't there any swings on the lower level of the park?  I would think some nice swings facing the lake or downtown would be a nice inexpensive addition.

^ The state has these. I inquired about why it is not used more at EW since it is the most highly visited of beachfront parks in the state. The best I could get from ODNR is that they had to share it with others. I believe it may get done a few times a year. In reality, such a beach needs this done every day in the peak season. Ridiculous.  All I can say is to email people like Glen Cobb at ODNR: [email protected]

Wanted to add this interesting article about cigarette butt litter and what this place is doing. The following from....

OCEAN CITY TODAY

New slogan asks OC smokers to ‘think green’

CHRISTINE CULLEN

Staff Writer

(June 11, 2010) It took a little longer than expected, but the Ocean City Council has picked a logo to go on the city’s cigarette cigarette butt containers to encourage smokers to dispose of them in the proper place.

People will be urged to “Think Green, Throw Away Your Nicotine” by using any of the 30 city-owned cigarette disposal containers located throughout town.
