One of my friends from high school started a beer bicycle delivery service in Brooklyn:

Who is this guy?  It's the Arby's good mood food guy.  Yes I went to high school with that guy.  He was pitching roast beef back in 2011 and now he's delivering beer by bicycle.

OH NO!  NOT THE GOOD MOOD FOOD GUY!!!

He's back.  And he's delivering beer by bicycle.  And he didn't come to either of our last two reunions.

also interesting. tishman-speyer wants to rebuild downtown brooklyn macys and add a ten story office section to it. macys would remain on the bottom four floors and the art deco facade and details would be preserved.

a blurb about one vanderbilt tower construction:

Vertical construction for the 1.7 million-square-foot, 58-floor building is slated to begin in early May. In February, workers poured 4,200 cubic yards of concrete into the foundation at One Vanderbilt, which marked the largest single continuous pour in New York City history. Banker Steel will be erecting steel that is fabricated at plants located in South Plainfield, New Jersey and Lynchburg, Virginia. Steel erection is scheduled to begin July, 2017.

Toronto is in the lime light in regards to the development boom they are having. Not to take anything away from that great city, but New York is currently on a whole other level of badassery (yes I made that a word). New York will always be the king. So much amazing stuff happening right now.

just insanity -- but hey if you got the coin why not?!

the recently topped out robert a.m. stern apt bldg at 520 park ave/60th st -- might set a record for most expensive apt in town:

Two condos priced at over $70M under contract at Zeckendorf’s 520 Park

The six-bedroom duplexes were on sale for between $73M and $83M

Contracts for two condominiums asking more than $70 million at Zeckendorf Development’s TRData LogoTINY 520 Park Avenue were signed in the past week.

The six-bedroom duplexes on high floors were asking between $73 million and $83 million, the Wall Street Journal reported.

...

The 34-unit building, which has a projected sellout of $1.25 billion, features a $130 million penthouse. If the unit sells at that price — and before Vornado Realty Trust’s $250 million condo at 220 Central Park South — it will be the most expensive apartment sale in New York City history. The current record is a unit that sold for $100.5 million at Extell Development’s One57.

  • 1 month later...

One of my former roommates and bandmates has run a thriving online toilet tank lid business for the past ten years.  He travels somewhere once or twice a month to buy all of a plumber's toilet tank lids.  This weekend it was this spot:

toiletlids_zpsfsrtzx2q.jpg

Here his his site:

http://cheaptoilettanklids.com/store/index.php?route=common/home

^American entrepreneurism has no limits.

...why is there such a disproportionate difference between the number of old toilets available and number of old toilet tank lids available? Do plumbers just toss the toilet but save the lid?

I had no idea this was a thing. Good on him for finding a weird niche to thrive in.

Yeah, everyone knows that the lids are more valuable than the toilets.  Many of the old toilets stopped being manufactured decades ago but they're of course still out there, waiting for that moment when somebody breaks the lid.  I remember attempting to fix our toilet when I was a kid, leaning the lid against the bathroom wall, and sure enough it slid down and broke.  My dad found a replacement at a junk yard after a week or two of going lidless.

He has gotten huge numbers of lids when apartment complexes, dorms, etc. are torn down.  A lot of times he is able to get them for free or for $5 or less and he sells them for $50.

  • Author

ask him how many times he pulls the lid to off to find, omg, sheesh that was some party, somebody pulled the 'ol upper decker again.

Moderators, I'm mindful that this is way off-topic...

Anyway, as far as I know it's illegal to install old "big flush" toilets.  Maybe some states still allow it, and there are probably some plumbers who will install them in any case.  In the past, I've been in the market for old toilets and especially old tank lids for our 100+ year-old apartment building.  But I gave up and gave in to new toilets, especially since American Standard had a model (Portsmouth/Townsend) that looked like an old style, and with a tall tank.  Unfortunately it was discontinued.  Story of my life.  Toto makes one that's styled like an old one but the tank isn't as tall.  The tall tanks help to conceal holes in the marble wainscoting that the old toilets caused, plus the taller toilets look better in bathrooms like ours with high ceilings.

Jake, there's a vendor on eBay, "birdcycle" who sells old tank lids for BIG bucks.  You may want to tell your friend he could charge even more -- birdcycle's asking $195 for an American Standard lid I could use!

^nice, but can we get back to the toilet lids now?

here is something interesting -- new brunswick, nj has this really nifty, but old, kpf designed tod/transit village project that seems to finally be getting underway -- we will see what happens:

And now, we have fresh renderings of the plan for The Hub, which Kohn Pedersen Fox is designing. To date, high-rise development in New Brunswick has been dominated by budget and auto-oriented design, but The Hub breaks from this phenomenon, both in terms of format and appearance.

Standard new towers in New Brunswick are typically situated atop large parking podiums, with bland facades and awkward massing. While the infill development is still a net positive for the city, a more urban-friendly approach is required if the city is to live up to its full potential.

Two approximately 300-foot tall towers rise from a podium that includes retail space, and the 1.7 million square foot project can be adapted to suit the needs of office, tech, or academic tenants. The shorter tower will be residential.

The project is being developed by the New Brunswick Development Corp., a partnership between government and the city’s largest employers (including Johnson & Johnson and Rutgers University’s flagship campus), which is the driving force behind development downtown.

on the affordable housing front ---

chestnut commons will be the first to go up along the newly rezoned atlantic ave corridor in east ny brooklyn -- di blasio wants to build a ton of affordable housing along here:

East New York’s getting a 274-unit passive affordable building by Dattner

Apartments will come in studio through three-bedroom variants

BY TANAY WARERKAR  OCT 27, 2017, 2:18PM EDT

One of the first new affordable developments set to rise following the rezoning of East New York is Chestnut Commons, a 274-unit development designed by Dattner Architects.

Located in a large vacant lot bounded by Dinsmore Place, Chestnut Street, and Atlantic Avenue, the building will be built to passive house standards and serve very low-income New Yorkers; about 80 apartments will be set aside for families making up to $25,770 annually...

... The building will feature a mix of studios, one, two, and three-bedrooms. On the upper end of the income spectrum, apartments will be open to families making up to $51,540 annually.

here is the first russian 1000' apt bldg in town - the lot is cleared and its under way:

New Look At Manhattan’s First Russian-Designed Supertall 262 Fifth Avenue, Midtown South

262FifthAvenue-October2017.jpg

The super-slender tower had initial applications filed about thirteen months ago, and demolition since then has been fairly swift, with two structures at 262 and 264 Fifth Avenue since disappearing. 260 Fifth Avenue will be integrated into the base of the project.

Boris Kuzinez of Five Points Development is the developer, and Moscow based Meganom is the architect. As described to YIMBY, “A bold, sleek aluminum and glass skin will be perforated with wide porthole windows on its eastern exterior. On the north and south, floor-to-ceiling window walls will have uninhibited panoramic views of the city and beyond.”

The building will stand 1,009 feet to its parapet, soaring well above neighboring projects.
