Chapman’s Owners Bringing Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge to Short North

If the bar in the closing scene of La La Land seemed like your kind of place, Short North will soon get its own version in the form of cocktail and jazz lounge Ginger Rabbit.

The husband and wife team behind popular German Village eatery Chapman’s Eat Market – Owner Bronwyn Haines and Chef BJ Lieberman – are responsible for the concept which is slated to open at 17 Buttles Ave. this spring.

The couple had actually looked at the basement-level space that previously housed Kingmakers before the pandemic. As the world upended, they put the project on hold until this past spring as things started to ease up. The setting immediately read speakeasy, and once the couple watched La La Land, the whole idea came together.

Ginger Rabbit jazz bar opening next week in the Short North

Curious customers will get their first tastes, sights and sounds of Ginger Rabbit April 19.

The Short North jazz bar is the second venture from Chef B.J. Lieberman and Bronwyn Haines, owners of Chapman’s Eat Market in German Village.

The new space, located at 17 Buttles Ave., is a departure from their heralded restaurant. Ginger Rabbit, in fact, doesn’t even have a kitchen.

First Look: Ginger Rabbit

Jazz Lounge Ginger Rabbit will open its doors in the Short North on Tuesday, April 19.

The cocktail-focused bar and lounge, 17 Buttles Ave., comes courtesy of Chapman’s Eat Market’s Bronwyn Haines and Chef BJ Lieberman. Although he’s had his hands in seven to eight openings over his career, Lieberman says he’s probably never been more excited for an opening. He calls it one for him – the kind of bar that he’d want to go to. And the focus of that bar will be gin.

He and Beverage Director Seth Laufman share an affinity for the spirit that will be heavily featured on the menu.

“You can’t get away from the fact that we’re in a basement and that just immediately leads you to speakeasy vibes, and you know prohibition, gin was the thing,” Lieberman says.

Bar-ish:

The first “bicycle spin art” concept has opened in Columbus, and it’s alcohol friendly

“According to Marty Parker, owner of Bicycle Spin Art, this concise motto is an accurate summary of the concept’s experience, where Columbus residents are invited into a basement-level High Street bar to indulge in a few drinks with friends, put on a hazmat suit, and make some truly one of a kind artwork with just some paint and a bicycle.

Bicycle Spin Art officially opened its doors in early April. The business is located at 560 S. High St., below Columbus Axe Throwing.

The space is set up with bike-painting several stations, each one complete with a vintage stationary bike, space for a canvas with a spinning mechanism, and lots of hung cloth to block paint splatter.”

Spent the weekend at the Residence Inn on E Gay St and was disappointed to see that Mahones Pub closed down recently, seemingly overnight and without warning. We always stay at that hotel and in our experience, Mahones was always solid for a drink and something to eat.

As an aside, my teenage boys and I have been doing this same C’bus trip about once a year for the last four years. I realize it was a holiday weekend, but even with the residential development around the corner on High St, the place was, again, deserted with hardly a soul on the streets. Even when we walked up to Short North, the bars and restaurants were all busy, but with no one out and about. It seems like people drive in, park up, eat and get in the car straight home.
Not having a go at the city - we had a great time, again. Lots to see and do.

A new “international” nightclub and cocktail bar is opening downtown this summer

“Located at 15 W. Cherry St., the 4,000 square foot space will include music, bottle service, and “visual elements of cities like LA, New York and Miami.” Noir Lounge will not offer food from an in-house kitchen, but Smiley said the club plans to have food trucks parked outside regularly.

The building is currently being remodeled, and is slated for a late July or early August opening.“

Rockbridge's Scioto Peninsula hotel will have a rooftop bar and more

Columbus hospitality developer Rockbridge plans to include a restaurant, coffee shop, rooftop bar and more at its forthcoming hotel in the Scioto Peninsula development.

The Junto Hotel, now under construction at 77 Belle St., will open next spring with the Little West Tavern, Maudine's independent coffee shop, the Brass Eye rooftop bar and a poutine walkup window.

The hotel is named after Benjamin Franklin's club for mutual improvement, the Junto Club. Since Franklinton and Franklin County are named after Franklin and the hotel is planned to be a place to gather, Rockbridge CEO Jim Merkel told Columbus Business First the name seemed fitting.

Maudine's coffee shop will focus on alternative milks. It's named after the cow that was crowned Ohio State's homecoming queen in the 1920s.

Merkel described the Brass Eye rooftop bar — named for a Franklin-coined phrase referring to someone who can drink a lot — as a place to unwind.

First Look: Mandrake

Rooftop lounge Mandrake has finally joined the nightlife scene in Central Ohio. Perched 10 stories up at 808 N. High St., the new concept from the owner of building-mate TownHall made its debut last week.

Initially announced in early 2020 pre-pandemic, Owner Bobby George says he wanted to get TownHall established and build the right team before adding Mandrake to the portfolio. George is also the owner of REBol in Dublin.

The rooftop bar is the tallest in the Short North and offers sweeping, 270-degree views of the Columbus skyline with a space that easily transitions from indoors to out. Seating and dinner service will shift to more of a cocktail lounge, bottle service set-up as the evenings march on.

Central Ohio’s first Black-owned brewery has secured a brand-new downtown location

“According to Anthony “Sizzle” Perry, owner of Crafted Culture Brewing, the popular brewery has secured a brand-new home in downtown Columbus.

Perry told 614Now that Crafted Culture will be moving their brewery to 189 E. Main St.

“The new location is going to be a more accurate representation of what Crafted Culture was designed to be,” he said. “It’s going to be everything I did growing up in the 80’s and 90’s outside with my brothers, it’s going to be the cookouts, the family reunions, all of that in one building.”

As the space is a new building, Crafted Culture doesn’t have an official opening dated lined up yet.”

The brewery has also been available in different Columbus businesses since the beginning of 2022. Its beer Unicorn Punch–served with a Pop Rocks-rimmed glass–is available at Mikey’s Late Night Slice locations, on draft and in cans.”

Hausfrau Haven in German Village adding new wine bar

A wine bar is returning to German Village.

The owners of Hausfrau Haven, a wine shop located at 765 S. 3rd St., plan to open The Laundry in October in the neighboring 369 S. 3rd St. space.

The shop used to operate an in-house wine bar on Friday and Saturday nights, but that ended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Co-owner Faye Muncie said the plan for the Laundry is to revive that offering, but in a 1,500-square-foot space of its own separate from the store.

The building is owned by RiverWest Partners, which renovated the space in the past few years. Noir Lounge is on the ground floor. RiverWest’s offices and other office space are on the upper levels of the four-story building.“

They described the concept to Columbus Monthlyas a neighborhood bar with approachable but “exceptional” cocktails rather than a cocktail bar in that fancy sense. They said the food will be Taiwanese and Japanese-inspired noodle dishes, dumplings and yakitori-grilled steak.

It’ll serve late into the night as well with an initial plan to keep the kitchen open until 1:45 a.m.”

The Fairway golf simulator and bar coming to Upper Arlington

The former Arlington Cafe space is getting a new use after nearly a decade of dormancy.

The Upper Arlington restaurant and bar at 1975 W. Henderson Road was part of the 26,000-square-foot Arlington Entertainment Complex, which also included a dance club and banquet and event space.

The facility shut down in 2010 after nearly 20 years in business.

Local entrepreneur Scott Stender is ready to bring part of it back. He’s taking the 7,000 square feet at the rear of the space to open The Fairway, a golf simulator and bar that he hopes will attract both active golfers and casual fans alike.

“The upstairs spot formerly known as Our Bar and Arcade Super Awesome has been reborn yet again — this time as a comedy club called “The Attic”. The 100-seat venue is opening this weekend, with many scheduled events slated for 2023.

When Mikey’s Late Night Slice announced it would be taking over the former Yellow Brick Pizza space on Oak Street, they also acquired the upstairs — but the team wasn’t quite sure what to do with it immediately.

“We had some ideas on a couple of themed bars, because we knew that whatever we did up there, it had to have a strong concept,” explained Mikey Sorboro, Late Night Slice Owner and co-creator of The Attic. “We couldn’t just open some regular bar and draw people upstairs.”

As Sorboro got the Olde Towne East pizza shop up and running, he met comedian Bo Stenger and the idea for a comedy club came together pretty quickly.”

“The new bar at 251 W. 5th Ave. is on track to open in March in the space that previously was The Shrunken Head until that live music venue closed in June.

“It’s our goal to make it feel like it’s been here 50 years,” co-owner Quinn Allen said. “A laid-back, beer-and-a-shot bar, the kinda place where you know your bartender’s name.”

Allen knows that concept well. He owns Zeno’s, which has been a neighborhood fixture since his father opened it in 1984.

At the Vic Village Tavern, he’s joined by Matt Herron and Lonnie Kubankin. That trio own The Library Bar near Ohio State University as well.”

Founder Matthew “Mac” Barnes has been developing the concept, which he described as a “blue collar country club,” since 2017 across a few different locations and in a few different iterations. It most recently was at 1365 Grandview Ave. near Grandview Heights.

Barnes spoke of the proverbial “third place,” that location that isn’t home or work where people gather and interact.

Bobcat Sports Bar Takes Over Former Home of Cleaver

Grandview has a new neighborhood watering hole in the form of Bobcat Sports Bar. The bar and restaurant opened last month in the former home of Cleaver, 1099 W. First Ave.

General Manager Ronni Stiffler says friends Dimitri Hatzifotinos, Jeff Wagenbrenner and Steve Papineau had been wanting to open a bar together. With the closure of Marshall’s last July, followed by Cleaver in August, they saw an opportunity to bring a more relaxed, family-friendly sports bar back to the neighborhood.

Stiffler says Bobcat is the place to bring the family – or not. For the family days, there’s a park across the street visible from the patio, games and a self-serve pop machine. For the non-family days, guests can saddle up to the bar and take in one of the many sporting events on the bar’s many screens.

New Bar to Open Behind Bodega this Summer

Short North’s Bodega is getting a sibling. Owner Brian Swanson will open a new concept behind the popular bar at 1044 N. High St. dubbed Apt. B.

It’s an apt name as the space was once an apartment. When the landlord shared that the apartment would become available, Swanson jumped at the chance to take it over.

“We’ve always known we needed more space there,” he says.

Indoor Mini Golf Chain Puttshack Expanding to Columbus

In late 2024, Ohio will get its first Puttshack location — a new indoor miniature golf experience that combines putt-putt with nightlife. The Chicago-based company announced last week that their Central Ohio location will open next year at The Galaxy at Polaris, a new 30-acre development being constructed on the former site of the Polaris Amphitheater.

“Establishing Puttshack in Columbus as part of our expansion plan in the Midwest was a no-brainer,” said Joe Vrankin, Puttshack CEO. “Columbus is home to a large community of young people – many staying after graduation – and Puttshack’s tech-infused mini golf is a high-energy social activity with unrivaled globally inspired food and drink offerings.”

Walnut Street Tavern Aims for Winter Opening

The home at 500 W. Walnut St. looks like a lot of others in Franklinton. It’s a modest, two-story home surrounded by the warehouse remnants of the industrial past of the neighborhood, but also a short walk from dense new development that is bringing thousands of new residents and visitors to the area.

And with the recently announced conversion of that house into the Walnut Street Tavern, owner Jim Sweeney wants to bridge the gap between the past and future of Franklinton.

“I’d like this bar to feel like a place where you can get a shot and a beer,” he explained. “A working class spot that pays homage to a time when everyone lived near their jobs and walked everywhere. Hopefully we can capture some of that community spirit that existed back then.”

Self-Serve Bar & Entertainment Venue Eupouria Headed for The Gateway

The owner of Old North Arcade is aiming to create another campus-area destination. Slated to open by the end of August, Eupouria will join the Gateway in the University District at 1568 N. High St.

Benjamin Morgan describes Eupouria as an “interactive nightlife and live entertainment venue featuring a self-serve draft system.” Taking over the former home of World of Beer and District PourHouse, the 5,000 square-foot space has been vacant since just before the pandemic.

That’s about the same time frame that Morgan has been looking to expand his empire. Another barcade was in the works when the pandemic hit, putting a hold on those plans. But a discovery earlier this year put things back in motion.

Market Bar Vinoteca now open at North Market Bridge Park

Market Bar Vinoteca now is open at North Market Bridge Park, giving the venue a “proper” wine bar.

Though it serves cocktails and craft beer as well, the focus of the new spot is wine – by the glass, bottle and at retail.

"We've assembled a fantastic staff and we're very excited to have Market Bar Vinoteca open and offer a relaxed, approachable, curated wine experience to our friends in Bridge Park and Dublin,” co-owner Pete Volker said in the release.

Punch Bowl Social Coming Soon to Columbus

After years of contemplating a Columbus expansion, Punch Bowl Social officially announced today their plans to open a Central Ohio venue early next year.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will be opening our next Punch Bowl Social location in Columbus in the thriving Franklinton Arts District,” said Robert Cornog Jr., Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Punch Bowl Social. “We cannot wait to throw our hat in the ring and get the party started next year by sharing with Columbus our take on hospitality as the proud host of the unexpected.”

The 20,000 square foot venue will be housed in the ground floor of the 12-story Gravity 2.0 building that was recently completed for residential move-in. The concept, which is not too dissimilar from PINS and 16-Bit (which will be relocating just a few blocks away from Punch Bowl), includes arcade games, bowling, karaoke and additional entertainment options along with food and drink.

Homage Partners with Graduate Hotel on New Bar in Short North

If you long for the days of hanging out in your parents’ wood-paneled basement, a new bar in Short North might be right up your alley. Homage Bar unleashes its American dive bar vibes at the Graduate Hotel, 750 N. High St., starting today, Thursday, September 7.

Yes, that’s Homage as in apparel retailer Homage whose Short North shop is just across the street.

Homage Founder & CEO Ryan Vesler has a passion for storytelling. And a passion for getting friends together to have a drink or watch a game. He realized he was limited in what he could do in that capacity at the brand’s retail stores and on a whim, floated the idea of an Homage sports bar to Graduate Hotel Founder & CEO Ben Weprin. Vesler says the next thing he knew, he was on a call with the Graduate’s business development team.

Homage Bar now open at The Graduate Columbus hotel in the Short North

The Short North’s newest bar is a familiar name, though it's not one known for serving food and drinks.

Homage Bar is now open at 750 N. High St. as part of The Graduate Columbus hotel.

The watering hole's name is a reference to the Columbus-based retailer known for its throwback-styles and sports and pop culture associations.

Homage founder and CEO Ryan Vesler wasn’t immediately available to talk about the new venture. The Nashville-based company behind the Graduate hasn’t yet responded to questions from Columbus Business First.

NBA Jam, Randy Savage: Homage's influence all over new Short North bar

An Homage-themed bar might seem odd to some, but not to anyone who knows the retail brand’s founder, Ryan Vesler.

“I’ve been talking about this for a long time,” he said.

Vesler thought his affinity for retro designs and old school ephemera would translate well to a space where the primary business isn’t selling throwback T-shirts and comfy sweatpants.

“It’s so much fun to create an atmosphere, to decorate our stores,” he said. “I always believed we could do that in bar form.”

Eupouria opening this week at Gateway University District

The owner of Old North Arcade is inviting customers again to play, but this time in a different way.

Ben Morgan will open Eupouria this week at 1568 N. High St. in Gateway University District. A soft opening event is Thursday night, with the official grand opening Friday.

While Morgan's first establishment is focused on classic arcade games, the new space has a different assortment of diversions for customers. Options include cornhole, darts, ping pong, board games and old school video game systems. Given the proximity to Ohio State, the game choices include flip cup and beer pong too.

Cobra opening this week in the Brewery District/German Village area

The Brewery District and German Village area adds a new bar this week.

Cobra is expected to open Wednesday at 684 S. High St.

The owners did not respond to Columbus Business First about their plans, but Columbus Monthly last fall published a thorough interview with the group, which is made up of four friends and previous employees of Watershed Kitchen & Bar: Jack Dale Bennett Jr., Alex Chien, Josh Spiers and David Yee.

The venture is filling the South High Street space that most recently was a Panera café but is perhaps best remembered by some as the 65-year home of Clarmont restaurant.

New sports bar taking over North High Brewing's former Short North-area space

A former Short North brewpub is becoming a sports bar.

Saturn’s Sports Bar hopes to open in the next four weeks at 1288 N. High St., a space that for the previous 10 years was the original location of North High Brewing.

The new establishment’s owner, John Hall, said though his business background is marketing, he’s always wanted to have a bar of his own.

“I’ve always wanted to do something for myself,” he said. “I’m a pretty outgoing guy. Three years ago I decided I wanted to open a sports bar.”

Bar humbug: The Bottle Shop becoming Ebenezer's for the holiday season

The Bottle Shop is getting into the holiday spirit with a pop-up paying homage to a Christmas classic.

Ebenezer’s opens at the 237 King Ave. cocktail bar Nov. 28. It will operate through New Year’s Eve.

The name is a nod to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The pop-up bar will feature a Victorian era-inspired cocktail list, some of which have been pulled directly from Dickens’ writings, including the hot mulled port wine punch, which Ebenezer Scrooge imbibes at the end of the holiday classic.

Brian Hoy and Matt Maynard hope all those workers will want some cold beer and some electronic axe throwing at the end of their shifts.

Oh God...

Tin Roof's expansion plans include a Short North venue and bar

The Short North is in line for a new bar and music venue.

Nashville-based Tin Roof plans to redevelop the former Flower Child space at 989 N. High St. in to a roughly 8,000-square-foot entertainment hub.

The property is owned by Robert Weiler Co.

Tin Roof hasn’t yet answered questions about its Columbus plans, but according to documents filed with the city, the renovation will cost $1.5 million.

The signs for the venue, which include a two-sided, 5-foot illuminated sign that will jut out from the building and be visible to both north- and southbound traffic, are on the agenda for Wednesday’s Victorian Village Commission meeting.
