New Union to open, old Union to be renamed

The Short North in Columbus, like Polaris, is no stranger to the restaurant industry's ebb and flow.  Roy G. Biv Inc., owner of five clubs and restaurants, plans to open its sixth business, Union Bar & Food, at 815 N. High St. by the end of the month.  It then will temporarily close its Union Station Cafe at 630 N. High St. for a makeover.

Popular Lindey's bartender opens own place in the Brewery District

Tuesday, July 12, 2011 - 10:13 AM

By GARY SEMAN JR.

ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Tony Murray was a bartender at a popular restaurant, had scores of adoring customers and a bevy of friendly co-workers, whom he called family.  But with the dream of one day opening his own place, the longtime bartender at Lindey's left his comfortable surroundings for something less certain but with amazing potential -- a restaurant of his own.  On Monday, he opened T. Murray's Bar and Kitchen, an ode to the bygone days of the Rat Pack, classic cocktails and personalized service.

He said he can't emphasize his attachment to Lindey's enough.  He started bartending at the German Village institution in 1989 and said leaving was difficult. "You've been in this comfort zone for so long," he said. "I was just waiting for the right opportunity and it came along."

Yet, he has lofty ambitions for T. Murray's.  The restaurant takes over the former Barrister Hall location at 560 S. High St. in the Brewery District, which has a re-emerging entertainment and restaurant scene.

Bexley Monk space giving way to greatly expanded Barrel 44

DAI-Barrel-44*280.jpg?v=1

Barrel 44 is coming to Bexley, but it may be more like Barrel 88.

“It’s going to be the same thing, but much bigger,” said co-owner Matt Nickel of Barrel 44 Whiskey Bar & Restaurant, a supersized version of Barrel 44, the Short North whiskey bar and eatery he and Shawn Korn opened in 2008.

Barrel 44 is taking the 8,000-square-foot home of the former Bexley Monk at the Bexley Square shopping center. It could be open by December.

Arena District site hopes 3rd time’s a charm after Lodge Bar, Big Woody’s

An experienced hand in restaurant-clubs is bringing one to the Arena District.

Shahriar Kazemi, who has run the Arlington Entertainment Complex on West Henderson Road since the early 1990s, is taking over the former home of the Lodge Bar and Big Woody’s at 165 Vine St.

He intends to develop a place – nameless, so far – that will combine dining, bar service and entertainment – a mix similar to the Arlington Entertainment Complex.

I don't know what was more stupid-er about that Woody's place; the obvious copyright infringement or the very "sly" penis reference.

^ That's actually the fourth bar/entertainment type venue at 165 W. Vine Street.  The first - and most successful - was the Brickyard.  A clever reference to the building previously being the showroom for Hamilton Parker, a local brick and tile company.  Hamilton Parker used to have an operational brickyard across Vine Street from this building that closed down after the Arena District development started.

After the Brickyard had a run of nearly 10 years, these series of operations - that are trying to draw from the nearby Park Street college bar crowd - took over.

A quiet commercial strip in the heart of Upper Arlington is becoming more of a destination with the opening of The Barrel Wine Bar next door to sister-establishment, Park Creek Kitchen.

Park Creek Kitchen and The Barrel share an interior connection that can be opened for restaurant use or closed off for separated events.  The Barrel also has its own Italian-centric menu, which features cheeses, antipasto and daily pasta selections.

The Barrel Wine Bar is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 10pm at 2124 Arlington Avenue.

World of Beer turns newest tavern into Easton debut

World of Beer is now on tap at Easton Town Center.

Franchisees Darren Greene and Mark Pottschmidt on Monday opened their second tavern in Columbus. The duo opened the first site outside Florida for the Tampa-based chain in October 2011.

Greene said they’ve learned a few things from their first World of Beer. The beer cooler is bigger and taller, as is the stage for live acts.

The Pint House Beer Garden Coming to The Short North

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on November 25, 2012 - 1:45 pm

Construction recently began inside the former Voodoo Denim Lounge at 780 North High Street, which will house the new Pint House Beer Garden this March when it opens to thirsty Short North residents and visitors.  Crews are currently gutting the former clothing store and installing new plumbing to accomodate the new bar and restaurant.  The roof will soon be removed from the front half of the building to create a 1,000 square foot beer garden area, which was previously planned for the back.

“The beer garden will be a courtyard-type environment with exposed beams overhead and a decor that resembles the shell of a warehouse,” said Pint House co-owner Chris Corso.  “A lot of the beer gardens I saw when traveling in Prague were located in warehouse districts in older buildings, so that’s what we’re going for here.”

Corso and his partners Mike Gallicchio and Brian Swanson form The CGS Group, a local nightlife and entertainment company that owns and manages multiple venues including The Long Street District, Park Street Patio, Park Street Cantina and The Social.  The Pint House represents a departure from the nightclub scene for the group, as they are targeting a slightly older crowd.

Pint Room offering 101 draft beers at new pub in Dublin

Business First by Dan Eaton, Staff reporter

Date: Friday, December 21, 2012, 10:40am EST

DAI-Pint-Room-beer-list*280.jpg?v=1

The Pint Room opened last Friday at 4415 W. Dublin Granville Road in the Shoppes at River Ridge retail center.  The 4,500-square-foot space had been vacant since the short-lived Wine Loft closed there in 2009.

Owner Derek Rapkin likes the visibility and proximity to Wendy’s Co. headquarters, which is adding jobs.  While the shopping center once struggled to attract tenants, a Montgomery Inn restaurant there has been a success and Wendy’s is moving a nearby eatery to a spot at the entrance to the center.

Fat Head's looks to open brewpub in Columbus

By Rick Armon, The Beer Blog

Published: January 11, 2013

Fat Head's -- the award-winning brewery in suburban Cleveland -- is interested in opening a brewpub in Columbus.  Partner and brewer Matt Cole confirmed the interest Friday, saying they are looking at the Short North, German Village, Brewery District and Polaris areas.  Cole said he'd like to open a brewpub with a seven-barrel brewhouse that could produce a "massive variety of small-batch beers."

Fat Head's would enter a Columbus market that is seeing huge growth in the number of craft breweries.  Over the last several years, the state capital has seen Neil House, Four String, Zauber, Seventh Son, Bru (now apparently going by North High) and a second BJ's location open.  There also are others planned and set to join mainstays Barley's, Gordon Biersch, Elevator and Columbus Brewing Company.

Columbus Alive on Rehab Tavern. I was surprised I was one of the first on Yelp to review this place. It was definitely worth a visit while I was in town.

Bar profile: Rehab Tavern

By Jesse Tigges   From the January 10, 2013 edition

As Franklinton continues its redevelopment efforts, former hole-in-the-wall Three Deuces Bar being transformed into a hip new hangout signals welcomed progress. The Rehab Tavern — a playful name derived from the bar’s renovations — opened about a month ago and is already seeing success. Manager John Crispi said there’s been a steady flow of patrons; neighborhood artists, downtown lawyers and even a couple dressed to the nines celebrating their wedding anniversary.

Most visitors to Rehab Tavern are coming to check out the spectacular renovations. If you’d ever hung out at Three Deuces, you probably won’t recognize much. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t remnants of the 40-year-old bar. An old Three Deuces sign hangs behind the bar and all the original furniture was refurbished with local artist Kevin Bickle’s custom designs.

Loose Goose Tavern Becomes Woodland’s Backyard

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

After a year in business, the Loose Goose Tavern has new ownership and will soon be getting a new name as well.  Jimmy Woodland, owner of the popular Woodlands Tavern, is giving the business a complete overhaul as it reopens and rebrands as Woodland’s Backyard.

“Better service, better beer, better music,” said Woodland when describing how the venue will be changing.  The outdoor bar space is being rebuilt, the interior is getting a makeover, the volleyball courts will get new restrooms and bocce leagues will also debut this year.

(Columbus Underground) recently spoke with Jimmy Woodland to find out more about his background in the bar business and why Woodland’s Backyard will be worthy of a re-visit this summer.

Hofbrauhaus beer hall far from quaint Irish pub with seating for 1,000

The next phase of commercial development at Grandview Yard features a Hofbrauhaus beer hall much larger than your everyday casual-dining restaurant or Irish pub.

The two-level restaurant planned along Goodale Boulevard will have 18,000 square feet, or nearly 2 ½ times the space at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Grill, an 8,000-square-foot venue that seats about 280 indoors at 775 Yard St.

The next $25 million phase of Grandview Yard received approval from the Grandview Heights Planning Commission on three 4-0 votes for the office building, parking garage and Hofbrauhaus brewery and restaurant.

A 78,000-square-foot, three-story office building will offer 75,000 of rentable space upon its completion in May 2015, Nationwide Realty Investors Ltd. COO Brian Ellis told the zoning panel and other city officials attending the meeting.

The Hofbrauhaus in Kentucky goes bonkers when an oompah band breaks into "Hang on Sloopy" so I can't even imagine what will go on at this one.

An entire bar screaming O-H-I-O at the top of their lungs in another state is always a kick. I think that's why people in KY look at people in those 3 counties a little differently.

Bodega to Close for a Month in February for a Facelift and Relaunch

By: Ayana Wilson, Columbus Underground

Published on January 20, 2014 - 8:00 am

In the nine years Bodega has been at its 1044 North High Street location, it’s become one of the most beloved spots in the Short North, consistently voted Best Happy Hour in the city by CU readers.  Its impressive mix of craft beer and satisfying food makes it not only a favorite watering hole, but a can’t-miss for visitors to the city as well.

This February, Bodega will close its doors for several weeks for a face lift and a new attitude.  Sangeeta Lakhani and Collin Castore, owners of Bodega, have decided that it’s time to shake things up and re-envision what Bodega is currently, and what it can be in the future.

“The Short North is getting too clean.  We want to add some character back,” shares Castore on the decision to rebrand and relaunch.  “We want Bodega to be a reflection of who we are now.  We love this, but we need to make a change.”

World of Beer Opening South Campus Gateway Beer Garden

Nothing goes together quite like college students and beer. To that end, World of Beer is working on opening their third location in Columbus with a new South Campus Gateway location that will serve student, faculty, visitors and locals alike. Additionally, the new bar will be larger than both the 3,900 square foot Brewery District original that opened in 2011, and the 2,900 square foot Easton Town Center expansion that opened in 2012. The Gateway version boasts over 4,100 square feet of indoor space with an even larger outdoor space.

Catch Up With: The Pint House

By Ayana Wilson, Columbus Underground

July 5, 2014 - 11:28 am

When The Pint House opened last April at 780 North High Street, there were rumblings about its appropriateness for the area and its ultimate success.  After all, the Short North is an Arts district, not an extension of Ohio State’s campus or Park Street.

A year later, the Pint House is flourishing, imbuing some much needed energy into the neighborhood.  Fears about the kind of people the place would attract (rowdy, young people who only drink to get belligerently drunk) soon faded when folks really got to know what The Pint House is all about.

The Short North’s Tai Tiki restaurant closed and has been sold to new operators who plan to bring a craft bar and restaurant called Julep to the space later this summer.

“We’d been looking in the Short North for some time,” new owner Fadi Michael told me. “We think we found a really good opportunity.”

After just one year of operation, Tai Tiki Polynesian Grill is closing their doors at 1014 North High Street in the Short North. While the closure is effective immediately, the space will not sit empty for long. A brand new restaurant concept called Julep is scheduled to take its place later this summer.

“We’re excited about the new use, which will have a focus on local spirits and local Ohio craft beers,” said Mike Fitzpatrick, President of Elford Development, which owns the Fireproof building where the restaurant space is located.”This will be a great fit for our building.”

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

"Craft" has become the new meaningless marketing buzzword. Craft beer? Fine. But what the hell is a "craft bar?" Sounds pretty crafty to me.

It literally tells you - "We’re excited about the new use, which will have a focus on local spirits and local Ohio craft beers"

Very Stable Genius

I wish someone would have opened a Dry bar or Red bar when the Dry beer fad of 1993 hit or the Red beer fad of 1995 happened with Red Dog and Red Wolf.

The Short North Parlor Room aims to sate the tastes of those who think cocktail bars are a bit too stuffy.

“This is a casual, neighborhood cocktail bar,” co-owner Eric Goodman said. “We know craft cocktails are popular, but we wanted to tone it down. This isn’t going to be uppity or intimidating, but you’ll still be able to get a good drink whether it’s simple or sophisticated.”
