January 11, 20205 yr Iconic Campus Bar Changing Ownership Future generations of Ohio State students will be able to keep making the same joke – telling parents they were at “The Library” – although this library doesn’t have books, but beers. Quinn Allen, owner of Zeno’s and Dick’s Dive in Harrison West, will take the reigns of The Library Bar come January 5, 2020. Fanatics and the nostalgic can fear not, though. For Allen, it’s important to keep the dive bar integrity of the long-standing campus joint at 2169 N. High Street. MORE: https://www.columbusunderground.com/iconic-campus-bar-changing-ownership-sp1

August 2, 20204 yr ^ But then Governor DeWine called for a statewide 10 p.m. closure order on Thursday - which the Ohio Liquor Control Commission approved on Friday. More about this below: Ban on late-night alcohol sales devastating, Ohio bar, restaurant owners say The Ohio Liquor Control Commission’s decision Friday to ban alcohol sales after 10 p.m. is either a necessary move to corral the coronavirus or an unfair blow to bars and restaurants, depending on whom you ask. Local health departments said that definitively linking cases of COVID-19 to bars is difficult. However, health officials said the recent spike in cases among young people who patronize those bars is undeniable. A spokesman for Gov. Mike DeWine said the move by the state is needed to put a lid on dangerous behavior and stem the spread of the disease. As of Friday, COVID-19 has killed more than 3,400 Ohioans and brought on the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. DeWine called for the statewide order Thursday. The Liquor Control Commission’s approval Friday means that bars and restaurants must now stop serving alcohol at 10 p.m. and all drinks must be consumed by 11 p.m. Bar patrons drinking late at night tend to ignore physical distancing guidelines and are less likely to wear face masks, which have been shown to slow the spread of coronavirus, DeWine spokesman Dan Tierney said. “This order is designed to target and discourage this particular type of activity,” he said. February 19, 20214 yr Re: Pins/16-bit combo locations. So every time I went to 16-Bit Downtown it has been hopping. Day, night whatever. But that was in 2015 and 2016. And the Downtown Pins had plenty of people both times I went in 2018 and 2019 (day into evening weekends). What happened in 2017 through 2019 was a big retro gaming crash where all of a sudden only N64 and GameCube mattered. I was thinking arcade was probably different. But when we went to the Pins/16-Bit combo at Bridge Park in late 2019/very early 2020 one Saturday night the Pins side was doing awesome with wait lists for most games -- even Jenga. Video game side was a ghost town most of the night acting almost as a Combo Breaker. Now with the virus retro gaming has roared back with a vengeance and all games from all eras are ON FIRE once again. I haven't made it back to a Pins, 16-Bit or Pins/16-Bit Combo since and won't be until the virus goes from Fever to Chill. Before COVID, had anyone else noticed a drop off in video game activity at these locations? Now during the virus it's harder to get good data at these places since a lot of people are staying home. I'm wondering if say later in 2021 and in 2022 if the video game side will be back to normal after a horrible 2017-2019 (The Fortnite Years). The video game industry is full of these boom and bust cycles and has been since the beginning.

This article is about a planned opening later this year of a new bar/music venue located in the same Old North/SoHud neighborhood as Ace of Cups. Lovebirds, a new bar and music venue set to open later this year at 367 E. Hudson Street, is scheduled to begin construction next month in a building that originally opened as a movie theater in 1925. One of the reasons for this new venue is that the Lovebirds owner wanted to operate a venue like Ace of Cups - and attempted to purchase it until someone else bought it instead.

The space is on the ground floor of the Open Air building at 2571 Neil Ave. in Old North Columbus. It's the second piece of Wolf’s Ridge Brewing’s three-component restaurant, bar and event space in the project. The brewery promises an exclusive food, beer and cocktail menu for the lounge. January 19, 20223 yr Chapman's Eat Market team bringing jazz lounge to the Short North “The owners of Chapman’s Eat Market are creating a cocktail and jazz lounge. Chef B.J. Lieberman and Bronwyn Haines expect to open Ginger Rabbit at 17 Buttles Ave. in the Short North in the spring. The basement space is the former home of Kingmakers Board Game Parlour, which pivoted during the pandemic to a teambuilding business. An empty concrete box at the moment, the space's décor will be softened with velvet curtains, plush seating options and candles and mood lighting. “We want to create intimate nooks, a place where you can come on dates, a place where you can relax and have a conversation,” Lieberman said. “It’s not going to be a concert venue per se.” They envision music throughout the night, but at a softer and smoother level early, enough to give some atmosphere but still allow conversation. “The volume might go up a little later in the evening,” he said. Though Lieberman has gained much acclaim for his work as a chef, Ginger Rabbit will not actually have a kitchen.” https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2022/01/19/chapmans-eat-market-team-bringing-jazz-lounge-to.html Meanwhile, I’ve been trying for months to get a reservation at Chapman’s with no luck 😒
January 21, 20223 yr Author First Look: Understory Wolf’s Ridge Brewing expansion project Understory is ready to debut the lounge portion of its three-part offering at Open Air, 2571 Neil Ave. in Old North. Joining the events space which started bookings last fall, Understory’s lounge officially opens its doors this Friday, January 21 at 4 p.m. Understory will offer a different experience than Wolf’s Ridge’s home Downtown. First, the focus will be on cocktails, thanks in part to the hire of former Curio Owner Travis Owens as the company’s Beverage director. There will be beer, but cans for now as the draft system and kitchen come online later later this winter. January 23, 20223 yr New bar opening in the old Daddy’s spot on Parsons. Glad it will stay queer, even if it’s not “officially” a gay bar. New Merion Village bar Rumours set to open this month “Two veterans of Slammers are set to open a bar in Merion Village as early as this month. Rumours will open at the former site of Daddy's bar and nightclub at 1071 Parsons Ave. The bar is set to appeal to a range of patrons, said owner Jackie Sansavera, with five televisions, darts, Keno, and a small stage and DJ booth. The bar hopes to bring crowds out for music, dancing and happy hours. Because the space does not have a kitchen, it will host food truck offerings.” https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/2022/01/21/merion-village-bar-rumours-set-open-month/6587593001/?fbclid=IwAR08SFqbVtZ3nJ3UGiLfsYcUmyzcxnWCIZJx-DUKsEeIvhjRt8CkxAWnXUg

January 28, 20223 yr Author Sober Bar The Dry Mill Opening Soon Downtown When taking a peek at the biggest predicted food trends over the last few years, mocktails and non-alcoholic beers have been a consistent presence. It seems to be a sign that zero-proof drinks might be moving from trend to common practice. David Payne has seen the shift. If you would have asked him even five years ago if a bar that actually doesn’t serve alcohol would be a viable concept, he’s not sure he would have said yes. But now Payne and friend and business partner Colin Thomas will open Columbus’ first sober bar. The Dry Mill will make its Downtown debut at 79 S. Fourth St. this winter. Whether for health, religious or a plethora of other personal reasons, “Not drinking now is not something to hide behind,” Payne says.
