January 27, 20178 yr Author The Light of Seven Matchsticks Basement Speakeasy Opens Last Night Along with the Prohibition era, the authentic speakeasy is long gone, but businesses nationwide are still trying to capture their illicit, clandestine atmosphere. In some of the bigger cities, speakeasy patrons can only gain access if they find its front in the form of hot dog stands, phone booths or bookshelves. Worthington’s The Light of Seven Matchsticks, debuting tonight underneath Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza, takes a more subtle approach. The basement bar, a former haven for illegal gambling, is said to have had high-profile guests Perry Como and Dean Martin. A wall separates the waiting area from the rest of the bar, a grated mail slot and peep hole built in for placing orders. A sliding “trap” door also adds to the speakeasy vibe. August 14, 20177 yr Brewers uniting to help fire-damaged Columbus craft beer bar Nearly two dozen craft breweries are coming together to support one of the industry’s early local supporters. Seventh Son Brewing Co. on Aug. 21 will host Total Eclipse for the James. Co-owner Collin Castore described it as a “mini-beer fest” to benefit its neighbor the St. James Tavern, which was damaged in a fire last week. The 21-year-old bar, which is a block south of Seventh Son at 1057 N. Fourth St., long has been a haven for craft beer fans well before the local brewing boom. ... “St. James was very quietly the first and continues to be one of the best craft beer bars in the city,” Castore said. Proceeds will go toward St. James staff and incidental costs. Insurance is expected to pay for the bulk of clean-up and recovery, Castore noted. August 15, 20177 yr Below is a Business First article link from last year about how the latest wave of craft brewers are sparking the reuse of industrial and retail spaces. It looks at how this trend has been good for the real estate market in general and some neighborhoods in particular. These smaller craft brewers have been turning long-dormant industrial spaces and past-their-prime retail sites into active destinations for consumers and for other businesses that want to be nearby to this activity. Three locations were mentioned: Land-Grant Brewing in Franklinton that converted the former Capital Lift & Manufacturing Co. elevator and conveyor factory into its brewery in 2014. Lineage Brewing in Clintonville that converted a former car wash building along High Street into its brewpub in 2015. Seventh Son Brewing in Italian Village that converted a former automotive repair shop along Fourth Street in 2013. (I know it's nearly a year old, but I just came across it. Plus, its just so on-the-mark for a development website like UO.) April 16, 20187 yr Author Craft brewer ready to expand — but not with more tanks Land-Grant Brewing Co. wants to make its outdoor party space a little more permanent. The Franklinton craft brewery will appear before the East Franklinton Review Board Tuesday with plans to turn part of the vacant lot next to its 424 W. Town St. brewery into a beer garden. “We’ve used that lot for some special events and it’s been great,” Adam Benner, president and co-owner, told me Monday. “As we’ve looked at the development of the neighborhood, we thought we could do something new and interesting with that lot, put that vacant space to a more permanent use.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2018/04/16/craft-brewer-ready-to-expand-but-not-with-more.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
April 18, 20187 yr Author Land-Grant Planning Big Patio Expansion to Open This Summer Land-Grant’s patio looks like it might get about 7,500 square feet bigger. The brewery team put in an application with the East Franklinton Review Board to absorb the adjacent lot they’ve been using for sporadic parties in hopes of transforming it into a beer garden and live music space. Barring delays, the addition should be complete within two months. “We always utilized that field for throwing big events — the Homage party, anniversary parties that we’ve done every year. And as we have been sitting in this dismal weather looking at the empty lot, we kept thinking, ‘How could we utilize that more?’ And we thought we could turn it into a beer garden, use it all summer, as opposed to a couple weekends out of the year,” said Land-Grant President Adam Benner.
