I went to a place like this in Greenville, SC this summer, and really enjoyed the concept! You get to try a ton of different beers, and I ended up spending way less than I thought I was going to. I'll have to check this spot out on a future Cbus visit.

Hilliard bowling alley going big in $5 million expansion, adding laser tag arena

ten-pin-alley-rendering*750xx1067-600-102-0.jpg

For Ten Pin Alley to push through its sales ceiling, it needs to knock down some walls.

The more than 50-year-old Hilliard bowling center was acquired 10 years ago by Sarah Gross who renamed it and converted the standard neighborhood bowling alley into a trendy spot more focused on food, families and entertainment and less on traditional leagues. That 16-lane, 14,600-square-foot center, 5499 Constitution Blvd., is more than doubling to 33,700 square feet in a $5 million expansion

Columbus’ four-time favorite brewery Seventh Son is expanding and adding a sister location this year.

Starting construction next week, co-owner Collin Castore said the additional space comes from the parcel of land behind their existing location at 1101 N. Fourth St. The final product will include more production room for all those tasty brews, a new canning line, and a 30-barrel brew house.

The Light of Seven Matchsticks Basement Speakeasy Opens Last Night

Along with the Prohibition era, the authentic speakeasy is long gone, but businesses nationwide are still trying to capture their illicit, clandestine atmosphere. In some of the bigger cities, speakeasy patrons can only gain access if they find its front in the form of hot dog stands, phone booths or bookshelves.

Worthington’s The Light of Seven Matchsticks, debuting tonight underneath Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza, takes a more subtle approach. The basement bar, a former haven for illegal gambling, is said to have had high-profile guests Perry Como and Dean Martin. A wall separates the waiting area from the rest of the bar, a grated mail slot and peep hole built in for placing orders. A sliding “trap” door also adds to the speakeasy vibe.

A Look Inside ‘The Keep’ Bar at LeVeque Tower

When Hotel LeVeque opened last month, it brought a new purpose to the most prominent building in the Columbus skyline. The LeVeque Tower, built in 1927, had long been a place cut off from the city, reserved for those who worked in its offices. With its recent renovations, creating floors of hotel rooms, apartments, and, most importantly, a bar, Columbus residents have a whole new way to interact with their favorite building.

Too’s Successor “Three’s” to Open in Old Scarlet & Grey Cafe Space

Campus’ favorite bar Too’s is closing, but its reincarnation won’t be too far off, in concept or name. Three’s, the third bar (for now) opened by local entrepreneur Scott Ellsworth, will open in the space that, until recently, was occupied by the Scarlet & Grey Cafe. Joining a handful of other bars on the block, Three’s will use the essential remnants from Too’s to add to the current campus bar culture.

“If it’s not in a basement, it can’t be Too’s,” Ellsworth said while ripping an old Scarlet & Gray beam from its socket. “You can’t really duplicate Too’s, because it’s a dive bar in a basement, so we’re going to do our best to keep what was here and incorporate what worked for us at Too’s.”

Update Planned for Standard Hall Patio

Alongside the other announcements coming out about Corso’s redevelopment of the northern end of the Short North, another, albeit smaller, project could soon be underway in the area. The outdoor space at Standard, currently occupying a parking lot-turned-patio, is set for a subtle revamp, if Corso and the Italian Village Commission can come to an agreement.

“The Italian Village wants a little more finished landscaped kind of product, and we’re trying to meet them in the middle on that,” Corso said. “I think there’s just certain people on that committee that have a certain vision, and that’s kind of what they push.”

Newest Gateway Tenant Leo’s on the Alley Opening Soon

Oldfield’s North Fourth Tavern owner Dan Starek will bring an old school dive bar to what used to be Eddie George’s event space. Rounding out the lineup of tenants filling up the Gateway, Leo’s on the Alley aims for that Cheers vibe, offering a place for regulars to come every day of the week.

Starek knows the space well. He worked at Eddie George’s from 2010 to 2012. The 2,500 square feet gives him enough space for a full bar, some wall-hugging booths, and a pool table. Entertainment will range from tunes off the juke box to Buckeye games on the TVs, to acoustic live music. All comes together to create “a place where people can go, have a few drinks, and relax,” Starek said.

Brewers uniting to help fire-damaged Columbus craft beer bar

Nearly two dozen craft breweries are coming together to support one of the industry’s early local supporters.  Seventh Son Brewing Co. on Aug. 21 will host Total Eclipse for the James.  Co-owner Collin Castore described it as a “mini-beer fest” to benefit its neighbor the St. James Tavern, which was damaged in a fire last week.

The 21-year-old bar, which is a block south of Seventh Son at 1057 N. Fourth St., long has been a haven for craft beer fans well before the local brewing boom. ... “St. James was very quietly the first and continues to be one of the best craft beer bars in the city,” Castore said.

Proceeds will go toward St. James staff and incidental costs.  Insurance is expected to pay for the bulk of clean-up and recovery, Castore noted.

CU article about the last week's fire at the St. James Tavern:  http://www.columbusunderground.com/st-james-tavern-closes-temporarily-ls1

Below is a Business First article link from last year about how the latest wave of craft brewers are sparking the reuse of industrial and retail spaces.  It looks at how this trend has been good for the real estate market in general and some neighborhoods in particular.  These smaller craft brewers have been turning long-dormant industrial spaces and past-their-prime retail sites into active destinations for consumers and for other businesses that want to be nearby to this activity.

Three locations were mentioned:

  • Land-Grant Brewing in Franklinton that converted the former Capital Lift & Manufacturing Co. elevator and conveyor factory into its brewery in 2014.

  • Lineage Brewing in Clintonville that converted a former car wash building along High Street into its brewpub in 2015.

  • Seventh Son Brewing in Italian Village that converted a former automotive repair shop along Fourth Street in 2013.

(I know it's nearly a year old, but I just came across it.  Plus, its just so on-the-mark for a development website like UO.)

The search for the perfect urban rooftop venue is over for Steve Rayo, owner and CEO of Dock580. The Smith Bros. The List: 12 New Rooftop Patios to Check Out in Columbus

Just a few short years ago, finding a rooftop patio was practically unheard of in Columbus. In fact, you could likely count the existing ones up just using one hand.

Thankfully, that trend is rapidly changing with the launch of over a dozen new rooftop patio decks in 2017 and 2018 and beyond. Below, you’ll find a dozen new rooftop bar patios and rooftop restaurant patios that have either opened recently, or are slated to open over the course of the next year or two.

Vinyl Shop, Bar and Recording Studio Come Together at Craft & Vinyl this Winter

What do craft beer sippers, vinyl collectors and local musicians all have in common? Come December, it’ll be a place called Craft & Vinyl, the brainchild of local music maker, marketer, and appreciator, Troy Stacy. The shop-slash-brewpub, taking over the old Alternative Resale shop on West Fifth Avenue near Grandview, is meant to create a space for intimate music performances and recordings and vinyl record shopping.

“People who love vinyl, like me, are probably the same people that love craft beer, like me, and probably people like musicians, like me,” Stacy said, “and somehow, these communities all swirl together, but there’s never been a place in this area where all that goes down under one roof, so I saw this opportunity to create that environment.”

Level Dining Lounge Closes Friday, will Reopen as Monarch Cocktail Lounge

Now under new ownership, Level Dining Lounge will go through a name and brand change over the next month. Open in the Short North since 2009, Level will close this Friday after a farewell party, transforming into Monarch Cocktail Lounge, shedding its gay club identity, and making way for a new night club and happy hour spot in the neighborhood.

The overhaul is led by an entrepreneur out of Miami, Shawn Shahnazi. With 30 years of experience and a dozen other restaurants and venues under his name, Shahnazi enters the Columbus market to bring a new element to the city’s night life. Monarch aims to provide a “cool, trendy and intimate lounge setting” to Short North partiers.

More than bowling: Hilliard center adds laser tag, expands restaurant

Ten Pin Alley isn’t so much one business anymore, but rather four in one.

The Hilliard bowling alley and entertainment center wrapped up a $5 million expansion that more than doubled its size to 36,000 square feet and added attractions such as a two-level laser-tag arena, bocce ball, a private lounge and expanded dining.

“Families need a place to go to be together, to be entertained, to enjoy each other’s company,” Owner Sarah Purdy told me on Monday. “Companies need a place for team building, a healthy and fun environment.”

BrewDog's Short North and Franklinton bars are coming soon

BrewDog USA expects to be serving beers in its newest U.S. bars by spring.

The Canal Winchester-based craft brewery could have its Short North pub at 1175 N. High St. open in April, with its Franklinton space at 463 W. Town St. following a month or so after that.

Keith Bennet, head of special projects and business development, provided that update Wednesday as he spoke at The Presidents’ Forum, an annual event sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Institute. He was interviewed by Don DePerro, CEO of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

Florentine Building to Become Night Club and Music Venue

The Florentine, the 70-year-old Franklinton restaurant that closed its doors last December, has been purchased and will find a new purpose by early next year. Fadi Michael, who owns Park Street Cantina, Short North’s Julep, as well as some residential and commercial real estate, has acquired the building with the intent of transforming it into a large scale night club and music venue. He’s expecting it to fill what he sees as an increasing need for evening entertainment in the area.

“Columbus is growing, and the night scene needs to grow as well,” Michael said. “As you attract more conventions and events to Columbus, you need those places, places that can hold 700 to 800 people.”

Monarch Cocktail Lounge Opens This Weekend

Short North’s Monarch Cocktail Lounge will open its doors for a grand opening this Friday, March 30. Located at 700 N. High St., the two-floor space used to cater to the LGBTQ demographic under the name Level Dining Lounge. New owner Shawn Shahnazi said while everyone is welcome, Monarch won’t be targeting any specific audience. But, with top shelf liquor brands, soft seating, and a chef-inspired menu, Shahnazi believes it’ll fit in among the other restaurants on that block of the neighborhood.

Craft brewer ready to expand — but not with more tanks

land-grant-brewing-exterior*700xx1117-630-177-0.jpg

Land-Grant Brewing Co. wants to make its outdoor party space a little more permanent.

The Franklinton craft brewery will appear before the East Franklinton Review Board Tuesday with plans to turn part of the vacant lot next to its 424 W. Town St. brewery into a beer garden.

“We’ve used that lot for some special events and it’s been great,” Adam Benner, president and co-owner, told me Monday. “As we’ve looked at the development of the neighborhood, we thought we could do something new and interesting with that lot, put that vacant space to a more permanent use.”

Land-Grant Planning Big Patio Expansion to Open This Summer

Land-Grant’s patio looks like it might get about 7,500 square feet bigger. The brewery team put in an application with the East Franklinton Review Board to absorb the adjacent lot they’ve been using for sporadic parties in hopes of transforming it into a beer garden and live music space. Barring delays, the addition should be complete within two months.

“We always utilized that field for throwing big events — the Homage party, anniversary parties that we’ve done every year. And as we have been sitting in this dismal weather looking at the empty lot, we kept thinking, ‘How could we utilize that more?’ And we thought we could turn it into a beer garden, use it all summer, as opposed to a couple weekends out of the year,” said Land-Grant President Adam Benner.
