I've noticed that sometimes when I click on a subject to view the pictures- I scroll down and there may be a list of what was taken but no images. Or... I see little boxes which say Missing Image or something along those lines or..... I see boxes which state that the bandwidth has been exceeded.

Could someone please explain each of these to me? I hope I don't sound like a complete idiot by asking about these. It's just that it's very disappointing to get your expectations up and then be so disappointed when you can't view the pictures.

If you don't see the images, it could be for a variety of reasons:

1. The forumer who posted them stores them on a site like flickr; some photo hosting sites only allow a certain amount of bandwidth use. For example, if the hosting site allows five "views" per day, and you happen to be the sixth person viewing the thread - you'll see "bandwidth exceeded".

2. It's possible the forumer who posted the images rearranged their images; for example if I post a photo - it has a specific link to a specific folder on my site. But if I go on my site and organize them into a different folder - the link I posted on the forum no longer works.

3. The forumer may have deleted the images.

Well this makes it pretty disappointing and discouraging for those like myself who are hoping to see some nice photos only to not be able to see them. :(

Would it be rude or inappropriate to ask the person to re-post them (in the case of the ones that are missing).

Thanks for the information about the bandwidth thing.

One persistent image display problem I've had with this forum is with Firefox, with all versions right up through 3.0.x. FF will not display all of the images if there are many images in a single message. It seems to cut off at the first several dozen (say the first 50 or 100 or so) and there is just blank space in place of images.

It seems to be a capacity issue specific to Firefox and it is difficult to even get information that anyone in the FF developer group is aware of it. I get around it by using a Firefox add-on called "IE tab" that allows fast switching of a Firefox display tab to IE or back. IE doesn't have this problem.

So, if you use FF, I recommend trying it with IE or another browser.

^ Rusty Shackleford, I love your screen name!  "Yup!"

It's not inappropriate to ask the original poster to repost photos or fix broken links, although you might not always get a response. I reorganized my web sites and on-line storage a year ago or so and broke a lot of links, and I've fixed as many as I can whenever someone points out a broken thread and asks me to.

^Same here.  Sometimes I don't realize I have broken image links, but if I get a heads up I'll go in and fix it.

I have noticed blank spots where pictures should be. I usually just right click and then hit View Image or whatever and then it will bring up the picture. But then I have to hit "Go back one page" and repeat for all of the pictures I want to see. It does take some work. :(

I had some major database and site reorganizations about a year ago with several of my sites, so many of my older images will no longer display. In addition, many of the links are now broken. I may go back eventually to repair that but it isn't high on my priority list (just click away on my signature below for the current sets).

That's a good point. It just gets to be impractical with some of these mega-mondo humongous image threads that contain ~100 images in a line - you're talking about dozens of images that don't display.

Again, the installable Firefox add-on called "IE Tab" allows fast switching of a Firefox tab to display using Internet Explorer as the browser. And IE doesn't have this problem.

I think "IE Tab" is mainly for web designers and such who want to preview how their site will appear in IE and Firefox without jumping to another browser. In any event, it works great to work around this particular issue.
