Posted August 22, 200915 yr Has anyone seen the movie District 9 which is in theatres right now? Thoughts?
August 22, 200915 yr I work at a movie theater in Wilmington and I've stopped in for bits and pieces of it and I have to say that it is the weirdest movie out right now. I think for it being 2009, the movie has poorly executed special effects. That's about all I know about it though. Don't take my word for it, it could be fabulous. After Inglourious Basterds and GI Joe, it was our highest seller tonight.
August 22, 200915 yr I saw it and loved it. One of my favorite films of the year. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 22, 200915 yr I really liked the first half. The second half is more conventional action/chase movie, and less enjoyable because the first half has you really thinking, and then the second half, well not so much.
August 27, 200915 yr I really liked the first half. The second half is more conventional action/chase movie, and less enjoyable because the first half has you really thinking, and then the second half, well not so much. This was what I walked away with, too. The first half was excellent. I liked the political aspect of the human/prawn relationship. I was surprised by how much they didn't even try and hide the fact that it's clearly a film about apartheid, with the aliens standing in for oppressed humans. The second have was well done as far as the SFX are concerned, but it was a lot less interesting. All in all, a good movie.
August 27, 200915 yr I thought it was a bit overrated. It was a decent movie, I give it props for being original, but can't say it's one of my favorites, but I had some high expectations going into it and it didn't quite meet them.
August 27, 200915 yr A lot of people are saying it's their favorite of the year. For the people who aren't saying that, what's been your favorite so far this year? I just looked at a list of movies from 2009, and I have to say, it was pretty weak. Of the films that I've seen, I'd pick District 9 and Up as being my favorites.
August 27, 200915 yr it's definitely the best sci-fi i've seen in a long long time and one of the best movies. i do like both the way it was filmed and the socio-political commentary. however, the best part may in fact be the sly black humour that pervades the film. this is what you get when UK directors make sci-fi; serious, but not too serious. one of my favorite scenes ( i let out a big belly laugh) was the cake scene @ the surprise birthday party - classic! has everyone that's seen D9 also taken the time to watch Blomkamp's short, 'Alive in Joburg'? Definitely worth a viewing...
August 27, 200915 yr I got a piece of glass stuck in my eye when the little prawn put his arm up next to Wikus' and tells him that they are the same.
August 27, 200915 yr I thought this film babied the audience. Rather than make subtle comparisons to apartheid, riots, holocaust, etc. they just put it all out there.
August 28, 200915 yr A lot of people are saying it's their favorite of the year. For the people who aren't saying that, what's been your favorite so far this year? I just looked at a list of movies from 2009, and I have to say, it was pretty weak. Of the films that I've seen, I'd pick District 9 and Up as being my favorites. I'll take a shot at this. I thought District 9 was pretty good but I can name several movies that I thought were better. Watchmen, Star Trek, Inglorious Bastards, Public Enemies, and the Hangover all cut in front of District 9. I haven't seen Terminator, Funny people, Observe and Report, GI Joe, and a a lot of others so there would probably be some more in front of District 9. Good movie, just not the best I've seen this year. If you really must know, the Hangover has been my favorite movie so far this year. Star Trek is probably a close second.
August 28, 200915 yr I thought this film babied the audience. Rather than make subtle comparisons to apartheid, riots, holocaust, etc. they just put it all out there. I get the impression that was on purpose. The film definitely wanted to appeal to a mass audience and there are so many people who are still ignorant when it comes to apartheid. For me, the cinematography, SPF and overall story made up for it, but I get what you're saying. A lot of people are saying it's their favorite of the year. Star Trek and The Hangover were both fun. Watchmen, in my opinion, was a fantastic train wreck. It was a noble experiment, but utlimately it failed. Did Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist come out this year or was that last year? That was a near flawless movie.
September 24, 200915 yr Watchmen was remarkably boring, though it had an excellent opening. The whole "see the superheroes in the 1940s" scene was completely unique - I've never seen that done in a movie in that manner. Star Trek was MUCH better than expected and I look forward to the eventual sequels. Hangover was okay, but mostly due to that bearded fellow. D9 was a fine movie, but I doubt I'll watch it again.
September 24, 200915 yr Since this seems to be becoming a catch-all thread for 2009 movies, has anyone seen 9? I saw it last weekend and was very disappointed. Looked great, but had one of the weakest stories/plots ever.
September 25, 200915 yr I thought district 9 was okay. Like some others on here, it didn't really meet my expectations. I loved Hangover and Star Trek though.
