Dayton - Old Dayton View/Jane Reece Park (My old 'hood)

This is the neighborhood where I lived on Riverview Terrace from approximately age 4 until I was about 14.

We moved from here in November of 1966 (if my memory serves me right).

I wish I had taken more pictures yesterday but I may still make another trip to do that.

The house we lived in is now an empty lot (formerly 876 Riverview Terrace. It sat directly across from Riverview Park.

Up the street from us was the "old firehouse" that we referred to as "The Witch's House" We were just kids and the place looked creepy to us. The gnarly old crab apple trees in back and to the side of the house didn't help things either. We didn't know until many years later that this was where the famous photographer Jane Reece lived! We thought the old woman was a witch! We then felt bad that we had tried to get rid of her by pouring a mud concoction in her mail slot! Kids!

One of my childhood friends lived in the house across the street from me. Her name was Peggy. And the house next to hers was where an older couple lived named the Bassetts. I vaguely remember either us or someone calling them the "Baskets" (I guess they either thought that was their name or they couldn't say Bassett). There's was the reddish colored house. Looks like the awning house come down from the front porch.

I will try to make another trip sometime soon to get some more pictures of other houses and angles that I didn't get this time.

Between me and you we are going to have all the Dayton hoods covered lol.  I drove through this neighborhood but didn't take any pictures.

I need to find some old pictures to post for comparison but I don't know if I even have any. Weird as I know my dad used to take lots of pictures! I'm sure they are probably packed away in a box somewhere probably deteriorating :(

I will definitely scan and post if I find any though!

Great shots!

Thanks! :)

Yeah, I know about this neighborhood as I used to have some aquintenances who lived there...even went to a small party in the old firehouse.

BTW, the WSU library has an collection of Jayne Reece stuff in their special collections, including pix of the remodelling of the firehouse into her studio/home.
