August 24, 200915 yr the Woodmere store is great, if you get there when the goods are delivered. 15 minutes later it's like a hurricane blew through. Bunch of bargain hunting yenta's rolling around the floor fighting over a handbag. 100% accurate. Its not only the yenta's the catholic's are there as well. Yep, we Catholics are vicious :whip:

August 25, 200915 yr I recently went to TJ Maxx for the first time in years, to return some things we got for the baby that we did not need, and was shocked at the clothing. almost everything is super casual and almost no "brand" names I recognized other than in jeans. Does nobody work in an office anymore? You used to be able to go there and buy discounted suits and stuff for work, they had NO suits at all, limited dresses, and everything else was casual. It's becuase we have turned into an entire nation of children that refuse to dress like adults.
August 25, 200915 yr ^You're right. I was looking at the people on the rapid this morning and I can't believe how badly everyone dresses. And all the women in white tennis shoes with their dress clothes. WTF is the matter with people!

And all the women in white tennis shoes with their dress clothes. WTF is the matter with people! In their defense, it's entirely possible that many of them had more traditionally business-appropriate footwear at their offices. At least a few women I graduated law school with who went to NYC have good shoes at their office but don't risk exposing them to the elements (which includes the floor in some subway terminals). You said that other than the shoes, they were wearing dress clothes. It's entirely possible that by the time anyone other than fellow RTA riders saw them, their outfits matched.

Um, there are PLENTY OF SHOES you can buy out there that are comfortable for the commute. I wear them every day, and change into my dress shoes when I get to work. And they are NOT tennis shoes.
August 25, 200915 yr For example, just about everything on this page: http://www.zappos.com/aerosoles
August 25, 200915 yr I know, I know, but I'm trying to give people the benefit of the doubt here!!
August 25, 200915 yr Nah, there's just no excuse. The comfortable shoes I buy cost just as much if not less than the tennis shoes I see people wearing. And I can tell you that the vast majority of them are not using those shoes for exercise, so it's not like the shoes are doing double duty and they're just being frugal.

That and all the airport workers. ick.
August 25, 200915 yr For example, just about everything on this page: http://www.zappos.com/aerosoles I'll admit that I was wrong ... ... about your gender. :-D
August 25, 200915 yr I couldn't give a crap what the airport workers wear, those guys work hard and in really awful weather sometimes, they can wear whatever they want IMO. But all the other people work in an office, except for the people who work in some kind of machine shop or somewhere where there's a uniform.

No (ok the majority of ) fashionable woman or label Queen would leave good shoes in the office! You don't buy Manolo's or Louboutin's to leave at the office.

Looking good is painful sometimes, but that's the price the ladies have to pay. I have some sentiment for the girls not wanting to wear heels to walk around the city/subway, but not enough to merit the tennis shoes with office formal wear, especially when 90% of the people you see during the day are during your commute. Sorry ladies, get some flats or tough it up. I don't want to have to look at gaudy tennis shoes.

Now some women don't wear flats. My mother wouldn't be caught dead in flats in public. She is a pump girl. She's often said, women with foot problems don't buy the appropriate type pump for their size, weight and job. My mother was an international flight attendant for many years, she wore pumps.

August 25, 200915 yr Well, I would never spend that much on any one item of clothing/shoes (Manolo's, etc) but there are plenty of fine shoes you can wear that aren't tennis shoes for commuting, and aren't Manolo's for work. Aerosoles and Easy Spirit aren't couture brand names but it's a hell of a lot better than dirty white tennis shoes from wal-mart.

She's often said, women with foot problems don't buy the appropriate type pump for their size, weight and job. Your mother must not have bunions run in her family. I've always had shoes that fit fine but I cannot wear pumps, never have been able to, I have bunions just like my Mom. I had one operated on and that foot is fine now, hope to get the other one done next year, but it's not just a size/weight issue. They are painful unless you have the kind of feet that can take it. I can wear open toed heels but not pumps.

But I admit it only goes so far. I'm just having fun at this point. Me trying to engage in an actual fashion conversation would be like attacking a tank with a pack of plastic flatware.

I just bought some Earth brand flats (a cross between a mary jane and a ballet flat) from Zappos for commuting (on RTA) and working. Man are they comfortable.

August 25, 200915 yr There's a difference between normal pain of high heels and your bones actually being disfigured such that you can't wear them. I'm glad your Mom doesn't have that problem but it doesn't mean that other people legitimately don't.

I remember the first time I turned the ignition without a chaperone present in the car. Now the rite of passage is buying a pair of masochistic designer-label high heels. Manolos and masochism. Call it Manolochism. :-P Kids these days ...
August 25, 200915 yr I buy shoes from Payless. No joke. The reason? they're singly the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn in my life. Only one particlular brand in one style. My leather soled shoes 1) hurt when I walk extensively in them (more of an issue when I worked downtown), 2) get holes in the soles after 6 months (as previously indicated, I'm heavy and beat the crap out of my shoes). I have a pair of Ferragamo's I bought 4 years ago that I've worn twice. Italians don't know how to make a size 15. Yes, I throw away my Payless shoes after a year. I don't care. I spent $20 on them. And let me re-emphasize: like walking on a cloud. Take that...fashion.

August 25, 200915 yr I don't care if they're expensive, I just don't want them to be tennis shoes. Particularly with a dress or skirt. The horror, the horror. I swear these women are bigger eyesores than the homeless and drunks I see on the rapid.

Payless are comfy. And plastic, so therefore water repellent and not requiring of polishing! So take that....Kiwi! Plus they look great with my pleated khakis and short sleeve dress shirts. All very practical and comfy.....

August 25, 200915 yr The last umpteen posts go to show that there are still definitely limits to our national "discount craze." (And like all limits, there are some people who flat out ignore them.) :-D

August 25, 200915 yr Nice use of the Angry Video Game Nerd a few posts back, MTS. I aim to keep you kids on your toes and provide a laugh or 20. :-P
August 26, 200915 yr I honestly can tolerate the flip flops better than the tennis shoes. At least they aren't big and fat and glaring white, with sport socks, at the bottom of skirted legs. I had to wear flip flops several days last week when I rammed the freezer door into the top of my foot, but I did change into dress sandals when I got to work (that didn't press on the top of my foot). I don't think they look GOOD, but certainly better than tennis shoes. The biggest offense with the flops is that 70% of the women wearing them haven't taken proper care of their feet and so it looks disgusting. I don't think anyone should be wearing sandals who hasn't taken care of their feet and have nice, polished toenails, let alone toes that FOLD UP OVER TOP OF EACH OTHER. I mean, I have seen this so many times this summer. Surely that is a medical problem that insurance would cover if you got it fixed, why do so many people live with their toes folded on top of each other?
August 26, 200915 yr let alone toes that FOLD UP OVER TOP OF EACH OTHER. I mean, I have seen this so many times this summer. Surely that is a medical problem that insurance would cover if you got it fixed, why do so many people live with their toes folded on top of each other? It's not so easy to fix. When I was a baby, my toes did that. So the doctor bound them. And they bled and bled, so the bindings came off. They still fold over each other a little bit. I wear sandals for as much of summer as I can.
August 26, 200915 yr The kids are here for their annual school shopping / end of summer trip. They just left for century 21 about 5 minutes ago. I'm interested to see what they will find. they grow up so fast.
August 26, 200915 yr X, I seriously don't understand why you can't go see a doctor and get surgery to repair your feet. So whatever they tried when you were a baby didn't work. What about now? I could not live like that.
August 26, 200915 yr Well, I don't have health coverage for one. It's cosmetic and doesn't bother me for two (like I said, "a little bit"). And now I know it might irritate people who shouldn't care about my toes anyway, three!
