think of staying in a hotel which was built by world famous architect and renovated to include some of his design concepts and furniture, take a state of the art brt to a  one of the top art museum in the country which also includes an addition by the same architect.  packages could be made to include discount tickets for  special exhibits etc.

Rarely do sites come with such built-in cache.  The style factor here is really K&D's and WRL's to lose.  And yet, I worry...  I'm hoping it was just mindless press release crap, but the restaurant concept announced in the press release was not promising.

I was a bit off, but TD Centre is Mies furniture in a Mies Building. Why not Breuer in a Breuer?

If we had something like

- The Royalton or Hudson Hotels

– Rocco Forte Brown's or One

– Maison 14

– Hotel de Sers

MTS, I wouldn't have become such a negative-nancy about the whole Indigo concept if it wasn't for a certain skepticism of yours about 15 posts up...

I'm all about tie-ins with Breuer for this project, I had even secretly hoped that it could have been called the "Hotel Breuer" with a restaurant called "Marcel" or something of the sort.  I could see Kimpton going for something like this...

But yes, point taken on Indigo's ability to individualize, and it is heartening to see that Westlake Reed Leskosky is involved with this.  Wait and see indeed!

Oh great....blame me!  lol  :whip:

Design notwithstanding (I'm not a fan, but I appreciate it's historical value), are they going to clean the building?  I really hope that it's colored that way just because of 30 plus years of dust and grit.

It just looks dirty.

It looks dirty because it is.  Its been vacant for years.  Are you being serious in asking if they are going to clean it?

Well, yeah.

I guess it's answered now.

Thanks.

Hotel Indigo Coming to the Heart of Downtown Cleveland

WEBWIRE – Tuesday, June 10, 2008

140-room conversion property to open in historic building

ATLANTA .- IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) [LON: IHG, NYSE:IHG (ADRs)], one of the world’s largest hotel groups by number of rooms, today announced that a Hotel Indigo is coming to downtown Cleveland. Construction is expected to begin this fall on the adaptive reuse of the mid-century landmark Breuer Tower, with an anticipated opening in spring 2010.

The Hotel Indigo will be located at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East Ninth Street, in the epicenter of downtown Cleveland, and is owned by The K&D Group...

Any progress = good progress.  I know this has been said before, but if all these developers and hotel groups (now two!)  feel Cleveland is a good place to invest many millions of dollars, then this must indicate an upturn, or at least an anticipated one, of our fine city!

1) Breuer Tower saved

2) Urban redevelopment in action

3) Cleveland gets Hotel Indigo

4) Additional 13-story class A office building with mixed-use lifestyle center

Is everyone happy with the outcome of this situation? Sounds like a win win for the Cleve.

^I don't think you can ever make everyone happy.  People will always find something to complain about.  That being said, I for one am pleased.

Thank you. I think people are forgetting how this building was originally supposed to get demolished and replaced with some crappy freakish-looking glass building half the size.

In a few sentences, they uptalked the ECP better than any media has here!

I won't be happy until we know, for 100 percent certain, that K and D won't sneak that horrendous upside down pyramid somewhere on the site. :)

^See?  Now that is what I call creative complaining.

With the gas leak this morning over by Cleveland Clinic, it brought to mind this area, more specifically the NE corner of East 9th and Prospect/Huron.  Every time I walk by this area I catch the distinct smell of natural gas.  Am I alone in this, or has anyone else noticed the same thing?

It's not natural gas you're smelling.  It's sewer gas.

The more I see that new building, the more i like it.

The frightening part is that corner there between the I-Con and the main hospital is where everyone and their emphysemic uncle smokes illegally

From that southwest angle, the old Ameritrust garage kind of detracts from the harmony between the proposed building and the Tower (in my opinion), making it harder for me to judge how they would really look next to each other.  One thing I was wondering is if the Tower needs to be cleaned or if it really was so dark to begin with, a grim fortress indeed!

I would like to see the garage torn down or retail added to the first level and maybe some sort of event space on the top.  Maybe a hotel, similar to the Westic Canal Place in New Orleans.

I don't think that garage is going anywhere.  At the risk of subjecting myself to ridicule...architecturally, I think that garage is far from the worst downtown.

I too don't think it's going anywhere, what I'm suggesting is some adaptive reuse.  That's a prime corner.

^Yeah, I hear ya, I'd love to see it too.  You're not kidding about that being a prime corner  But maybe more than most sites, that garage was explicitly a prime selling point for the County and probably for K&D too.

In that picture, the garage is a "horizontal" in a row of "verticals", to the north, so it changes the look, doesn't sandwich in the new building - I really am not sure how to say what I mean.

They could put a heck of a pool or running track on top, or maybe a par 3 golf course. lol.  I have to confess I have parked in it countless times for when visiting our downtown office.  From the top you can see a little into the Jake or the Prog, whatever.  Adaptive reuse of part of it would be excellent.

Many hotels or Residential building, place pools, tracks or other "amenity deck" items above pools.

I do hate that garage-although it rarely stopped me from parking there during Indians games in HS.

"WE HAVE TO SAVE THE TOWER!!  BUT THE GARAGE THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE IT HAS TO GO!!"

Dear Lord..

i do like how the glass tower and the garage play off the breuer in that new rendering. it's great to see a new visually interconnected and unified ensemble like that. i can picture that view very well from the ballpark stands.

lol...did Breuer design the garage, too?  It is actually better than most garages Downtown, and it would be cool if some sort of retail use could be put along the ground floor, but it looks like the ceilings are real low.

The one-story garage that is located between Carter Manor and the garage on the corner of Prospect and E.9th will be demolished. Another garage will be constructed in its place. It will be the same height as the corner garage.

Is that still part of K&D's plan?  The latest siteplan posted here didn't show that or any of the other buildings they had initially suggested.

New garage is part of the plan, and Breuer didn't design the garage.

  • 3 weeks later...

FYI, it looks like K&D is going before Design review on the 16-17th with their plans/concepts (informational only)... Not sure if its anything new or more details though.

There's a big blue fence up around the building on the E.9th side.  I have photos.  Coming soon.

That fence has been there for quite some time.

Oh.

Well, you can't see the picture, then. :)

no, no, no -- we want your pics fencing & all!!

Nope!  Sorry, w28th ruined it for all of you.

Just kidding.  Here you go.

;)

If it is already in this thread somewhere im sorry, but does anyone know what the plans are for the old cleveland trust building in front of the tower?

the one at the corner of 9th and euclid?! I was hoping theyd be able to remodel it or do whatever and use it for something

ouch, well that sucks.....thanks!

I think we should cover it with corrugated metal paneling!  To hell with that wannabe pantheon-i don't know if I'm Greek or Roman cr@p!!!
