October 3, 201311 yr Yes, it'll be a Marriott. I heard a few weeks back--but i can't remember the type of marriott. Maybe Edition. it was something that i had never heard of before. Looking at this description of the Edition hotels I would be honored to have it in Cleveland! "This is the latest edition of luxury boutique hotels and the perfect combination of energetic atmosphere, attitude and style. Each property is distinctive and designed by award-winning hotelier Ian Schrager. Each EDITION hotel is located in one of the world's most attractive destinations."
October 3, 201311 yr If that's true and their website is accurate that would be only the fifth of that brand, and the third in the US behind NYC and Miami Beach.
October 3, 201311 yr Where's MTS when we need him to tell us that Edition is just some overhyped piece of crap? :) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 3, 201311 yr Would anyone be able to help a graduate architecture student acquire autoCAD drawings for the complex? I am doing my thesis project at this site, and anything that could be of benefit would be greatly appreciated. PM me if you have any more information, THANK YOU!!!
October 3, 201311 yr Where's MTS when we need him to tell us that Edition is just some overhyped piece of crap? :) Whatever happened to MTS?
October 3, 201311 yr ^ He'll disappear periodically then pop back after he finishes whatever nefarious plan he was implementing. I saw the tower in person yesterday for the first time in a while and I have to say that while it looks good in the pics, they don't nearly do it justice. I can't believe how different it looks now that it's clean. It's quite a different building, and it's lost some of its dark, foreboding, menacing feel.
October 4, 201311 yr Here we go....even though UO broke the story... Ameritrust redo will include a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel and 205 apartments. By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on October 04, 2013 at 10:30 AM, updated October 04, 2013 at 10:32 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The buyer of the former Ameritrust complex has inked a deal with Marriott to bring an Autograph Collection hotel to East Ninth Street, as part of a project that includes 205 apartments, a grocery store, a Euclid Avenue rooftop bar and an indoor dog park. Developer Greg Geis hopes to wrap up financing deals in November and push for an opening just a year later. That's an aggressive schedule for an undertaking that involves three historic buildings and carries, if you include the new Cuyahoga County headquarters at East Ninth and Prospect Avenue, a $250 million price tag. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/10/ameritrust_redo_will_include_a.html#incart_river#incart_m-rpt-2
October 4, 201311 yr The impact this will have is just incredible... I cant wait to see not only this project but what other projects this might help push along
October 4, 201311 yr Here's a couple of the renderings from the Cleveland.com story. The Metropolitan at the 9 is lookin good!!! http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/10/ameritrust_redo_will_include_a.html#incart_river#incart_m-rpt-2
October 4, 201311 yr ^lol, I was busy composing my own rant when you posted that. Very minor in the overall awesomeness that this project is happening, but the branding stills seems like a wreck...so is "the 9" just the Breuer tower or the whole three (four?) building complex? [EDIT: oops, I guess this is answered in the excerpt from the website below] There are more here: http://the9cleveland.com/ "The 9 is a bold fusion of city landmarks: a 1906 rotunda and 70s-vintage office tower..." Mind-boggling that not even the fluff web site mentions Breuer by name. You have a building many people find ugly, but designed by one of the most famous (internationally) architects of the 20th century. That's instant credibility for some, and at least something that sounds kind of cool or noteworthy for those who don't know or don't care (or even don't like) his portfolio. Not even a reference in the names of the bars/restaurants: "The Ledger," "Azure Sky," "Adega." This part was unexpected- could be cool: http://the9cleveland.com/theatre.html
October 4, 201311 yr Very exciting. The rooftop lounge, in particular, sounds terrific. I'm really curious to see if Geis can sustain the $2/sq ft rental rate in downtown, and if he does, how it will affect other properties downtown -- as Michelle notes, MRN's already pricing this in U. Circle. The synergy around E. 9th & Euclid will be electric, esp. once the Schofield building goes on line across 9th Street... I still can't wrap my arms around a Heinens grocery store is going to work in the old Rotunda, but I love the Heinen Bros. for aggressive pluck in trying it, and have to believe the project will come up aces ... I mean, how many folks are gonna wanna shop there to admire the architecture?
October 4, 201311 yr Not surprising...but the comment section of this article on Cleveland.com is one of the most entertaining spectacles I've ever seen. Michelle has some real patience, haha.
October 4, 201311 yr Obviously this whole thing is exciting - that goes without saying. But I'm really happy with the inclusion of a rooftop bar. 360 on top of the Hilton at the Ballpark in St. Louis is awesome - like I just want to live there awesome. Haven't gotten a chance to read the article to see if they elaborate, but I hope they have indoor and outdoor space up there!
October 4, 201311 yr The headboards on the beds in what looks like the hotel rooms is copied from, or at least inspired by the window wall that was wrecked by the county. Nice touch!
October 4, 201311 yr These are the kind of spin off developments I was hoping for when we built the big peices of the puzzle, the Rock Hall, Gateway, and now the Convention Center, along with the smaller pieces, the Casino, the Healthline, Playhouse Sq., E. 4th.etc. It is amazing how much Cleveland has built itself up, and I think we are at the tipping point. The future of downtown is very bright.
October 4, 201311 yr This intersection (or at least a large portion of it) is going to be, well, just wow.
October 4, 201311 yr From Michelle's article: One would-be renter already asked about leasing the entire 28th floor, roughly 11,000 square feet. That must be MTS..am I right..lol Also this render of the proposed deli was posted before but lost during the crash.
October 9, 201311 yr Channel 8 story on the Ameritrust tower. http://fox8.com/2013/10/08/luxury-apartment-complex-to-revamp-ameritrust-building/
October 11, 201311 yr This looks so fantastic already. The cleaning has made this building so much more presentable and respectable. I'm so happy this wasn't torn down and is seeing some serious new life.
October 11, 201311 yr good lord look how clean that sonofagun is. its like a completely new and different building. i bet it never even looked like that when it was first built either. by the time construction got to the top the soot would have blackened it. my godfather was an ironhanger and worked on that building, i wish he was still alive to see it now. edit - breuer too for that matter!
October 11, 201311 yr I thought a little side-by-side comparison would be interesting. So this is BC (before cleaning).... And this is AC (after cleaning).... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 11, 201311 yr I kept telling people who didn't care if it was leveled or not that The Breu would be fantastic if only they could see through the dirt and grime. You always look and feel better right after a good shower!
October 11, 201311 yr Now it makes me think of the Alcoa Building and Gateway 1, 2, & 3 in Pittsburgh. I am so glad the tower was not demolished.
October 11, 201311 yr Now it makes me think of the Alcoa Building and Gateway 1, 2, & 3 in Pittsburgh. I am so glad the tower was not demolished. Good comparisons. I've been in the Alcoa Building a couple of times for meetings. That's proving to be a good residential conversion too. October 11, 201311 yr Geis brothers' plan for the Ameritrust complex is rescuing two Cleveland architectural landmarks It’s too soon to tell how successful the Geis Cos. of Streetsboro will be financially and architecturally in their ambitious project to renovate the long-vacant Ameritrust complex in downtown Cleveland with apartments, a hotel and a supermarket. But for now, anyone who cares about the preservation of important local landmarks ought to be pleased by this $250 million project. That’s because developers and brothers Greg and Fred Geis have charted a credible forward path for an historically and architecturally important group of buildings on the southeast corner of East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue whose future has been in question for well over a decade. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2013/10/geis_brothers_plan_for_the_ame.html#incart_river_default
October 11, 201311 yr Are there plans to clean the exterior of the Rotunda as well? Probably. There's a couple of clean patches where it looks like they've tested the cleaning. October 15, 201311 yr Wow I cannot believe the new county admin building is expected to OPEN next summer! Seems very aggressive given where they are in construction. I mean they're moving fast but dang! :-o More Cuyahoga County offices moving this week Print Andrew J. Tobias, Northeast Ohio Media Group By Andrew J. Tobias, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on October 15, 2013 at 9:55 AM, updated October 15, 2013 at 10:34 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County on Tuesday launched the latest phase of its move out of a downtown administrative building to make way for a convention center hotel. Mostly back-end components of the county fiscal office were to begin operating from Reserve Square, 1701 East 12th St., according to a news release from County Executive Ed FitzGerald's office. In the new location are the following offices: fiscal officer, budget and management, financial reporting, homestead, conveyance and transfer, records management, tax map group, procurement and diversity, and the county's call center. Next Monday, services more commonly accessed by the public -- boards of revision, investments, taxation and the county treasurer's office -- will relocate to 1910 Carnegie Ave.. The moves are only temporary. Next summer, county offices will move a second time from their temporary locations to a new eight-story, $75.5 million county administration building at the former Ameritrust complex at corner of East 9th Street and Prospect Avenue. :-o :-o http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2013/10/more_cuyahoga_county_offices_moving_this_week_and_next.html#incart_river_default
October 15, 201311 yr Isn't the latest news that they want to break ground for the hotel by years end? If so, I guess these folks need to get their move on...
October 15, 201311 yr Isn't the latest news that they want to break ground for the hotel by years end? If so, I guess these folks need to get their move on... Yes! And I think the convention hotel is supposed to open by 2015, or certainly in time for the city to make a possible run for the political conventions in 2016. After a lifetime of projects taking years/decades to complete, I cannot keep up with the pace of development in Cleveland these days. You can get whiplash downtown looking at developments!

October 15, 201311 yr ^come on guys...yes...look at the Chicago develoment thread for just ONE example...boosterism can be nice but also you should be real.

Seriously, is there another city that has had as many renovations and new projects constructed or under construction in the past 6 years as Cleveland? Most cities do. Note that the "Back To The Cities" movement uses a plural word. This is happening everywhere, including in Ohio. Columbus and Cincinnati have a phenomenal amount of development going on in their downtowns and surrounding neighborhoods. I love this column....... http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/28/opinion/sunday/friedman-i-want-to-be-a-mayor.html OK, back to The Breuer! October 16, 201311 yr They've been loading drywall up in the externally mounted elevators lately, and you can clearly see metal wall studs through the windows of the tower. And, this article has some floor plans and more details: http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2013/10/geis_brothers_plan_for_the_ame.html
October 16, 201311 yr ^Will be interesting to see whether internal bedrooms is a turnoff for people looking to rent at these higher price points. I know it's now pretty normal for downtown, but it's definitely not the norm for luxury properties. I certainly understand why it has to be that way with old office/department store floorplates and our market.

Seriously, is there another city that has had as many renovations and new projects constructed or under construction in the past 6 years as Cleveland? I've read that Toronto has something like 130 high rises under construction with many other previously completed and more planned. The strong markets have definitely seen more construction due the market being able to justify new construction which attracts outside developers. Cleveland on the other hand isn't quite there yet and requires historic tax credits, as well as other extreme forms of financing. With all this said, it doesn't mean our projects haven't been exciting!!

With all this said, it doesn't mean our projects haven't been exciting!! We went to Toronto last summer and had dinner up in the CN Tower. I could count at least 40 construction cranes without exaggeration in the near downtown area, building primarily apartment/condo towers. Was a little depressing thinking how we were so excited about the E&Y "tower" at the time. Oh well, things do really seem to be picking up steam in Cleveland though, need to keep the momentum going which will hopefully one day lead to pure private construction/investment.
October 16, 201311 yr Toronto is off-the-hook. Considering it's Canada's NYC and they had proper banking laws that minimized the financing meltdown in 2008, it's not surprising. Young people from all over Canada move there and put down roots.
October 16, 201311 yr Does anyone know if the Azure Sky rooftop sun deck and bar will be open to the public or just for apartment peeps and hotel guests? https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
October 16, 201311 yr ^I certainly don't know the answer one way or another but why would such a business want to limit it's customer base?
October 16, 201311 yr ^I agree. That's why I was asking since it would be a shame to not be open to the public. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
October 16, 201311 yr The silly marketing speak makes it sounds like the rooftop bar will be open to the public, but maybe only if you're one of "the city's elite": http://the9cleveland.com/rooftop.html
October 16, 201311 yr ^in my own mind I AM one of the city's elite...but I don't have a shiny grey jacket like the one the guy in the middle is wearing so I guess I am going to have to buy all new clothes
