It'll be so nice when there's a Le Meridien across the street :)

Anyone know if this going to be for people eating prepared food and fair exchange coffee stuff bought from Heinens?  Or will there be some kind of table service?  I'm sort of mixed on this. Not a fan of seeing the sidewalk pinched so narrow. Don't like it near East 4th either.

It will be additional seating for those eating prepared foods, sushi, salad bar, grill, etc, just like the seating under the rotunda. Tables will be in place mid-next week.

^^I have no problem with the seating, and in fact welcome it.  It pumps even more life into this most important corner.  Outdoor seating is the norm at urban supermarkets these days (just look at Constantino's in both the WHD and UC/Uptown).  It also enhances this new Heinen's image as being more than just a supermarket, but as an "it" gathering place, as well.... And as for pinched sidewalks, take a look at Philly all over Center City with al fresco seating.  For this 50 or 60 feet, I'll take it.

Guess I'm not the only one.  That's a heavy traffic area, or at least it should be.

It might be kind of uncomfortable for most people to sit that close to an active sidewalk, and there's the issue of beggars and potential crime.    If it's a public sidewalk, can they run off panhandlers who camp right there?

I don't recall any beggars bothering people at Cadillac Ranch and haven't heard any anecdotes from Pure Vida regulars, and both have similar patios.

Beggars and potential crime? I go to Heinen's usually 3-4 times per week and and have only encountered a beggar around there two or three times. And what kind of potential crime do you speak of?

Such an odd comment. Sidewalk dining is extremely common all over, including in Cleveland. I'm not sure how this would be any bit different than the dozens of other sidewalk dining areas.

I dunno, you can always walk away from them, but if you are sitting still you are a better potential target.  Especially when eating somewhere expensive.  And that sidewalk is bottlenecked pretty good.

It seems like they'd have to put the tables in easy reach of people walking by.  Other places I have seen aren't neccesarily with reach.

Oh well, spotting potential problems is what I do for a living so I may be pessimistic....

Erocc, you're aware, right, that there are already several outdoor dining areas along sidewalks in Downtown Cleveland?  This is isn't some newfangled experiment...

Anyone want to guess why Heinens is putting out patio enclosures? I don't think they're required unless there's alchohol consumption.  Maybe just for aesthetics? Would be awesome if they let you drink store-bought beer right there...

^^You know, outside seating in downtown restaurants isn't exactly a rare phenomenon. Somehow every city in the world seems to manage despite having homeless populations, panhandlers and gutterpunks.

Smoking, perhaps?

This one seems different, perhaps because it's a main commercial street and the sidewalk is pinched so hard.

Or you could sit down for some nice al fresco dining, enjoy the city, and stop worrying. Tear down the walls of fear, eRocc! Be free! :)

I've seen the Downtown Partner folks handle situations where people hassle outdoor patrons. Even then, I've only seen that issue arise once or twice.

As I've said before, let's not be so hasty in calling the downtown Heinen's the most beautiful grocery store in the world.  The U.S., perhaps.  But Europe....  A few months ago I showed photos of the Food Hall at the Harrod's flagship store in London.  This is about the Yeliseyevsky grocery store in Moscow:

https://www.likealocalguide.com/moscow/yeliseyevsky-store

I had thought our Mayfield Heights Yeliseyevsky's, which is a great store for a local ethnic food place, was named for a local individual, but it turns out it must be named for the Moscow emporium.

From this article on Crain's (http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20150713/BLOGS14/150719949/columbus-roads-resurgence-gains-a-professional-firms-office)  re. the Spaghetti House building:

More movement on East Ninth Street

The sphere of influence of Geis Cos. on East Ninth Street in downtown Cleveland has taken a step farther south.

The Streetsboro-based builders and developers recently assumed management of The New York Spaghetti House, a one-time landmark restaurant at 2173 E. Ninth St. and the parking lot next door to it, a prized location near Progressive Field. The properties abut the south side of the garage on East Ninth that serves Geis’ The 9, the mixed-use office, hotel, apartment and retail complex between Euclid and Prospect Avenues.

Asked what Geis’ plans are for the property, Greg Geis had a surprising answer in an email.

“Just the property manager,” Greg Geis wrote, adding in a subsequent email that neither he nor brother Fred Geis has an ownership stake in Spaghetti House. The answer was a surprise, as Downtown Investment Group LLC lists to the family-owned development and construction concern’s address in Streetsboro, where tax bills will also be sent.

Greg Geis said he does not know of plans for the long-empty building. He did not respond to question’s about the identity of the client.

The seller was R. House Cleveland LLC, a real estate company led by Rascal House owner-operators Michael and Fouly Frangos, who acquired it last year.

Though things changed a lot on East Ninth Street since 2014, nothing significant changed at this property. Neither did the sale price: Downtown Investment Group paid $1.5 million, the same figure R. House paid, according to Cuyahoga County land records.

Let's, please, keep referring to the building as the "New York Spaghetti House building," and the restaurant has been gone many years and I wouldn't want someone to come across a post and think it's still going.....  As the building is one of the oldest downtown, and would fit well into the Warehouse District, I hope it is not the next historic threat for demolition! :police:

Geis Cos. plans repositioning at The Vault at @The9CLE. Diversifying into food w/ gastropub-type options, departure from pure nightclub.

Geis could get into some hot water over apparently displaying ads on his big display board on East 9th that don't have anything to do with The 9/Heinen's/parking/county administration building...

^ I was wondering about that. I live right around the corner from there and quite often have seen ads on the boards that have nothing to do with the 9 complex, which I had thought was prohibited. I just assumed they eventually got some permission from the city for it. Guess not...

At The 9 in downtown Cleveland, $77 million refinancing comes a year early (photos)

By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The strong downtown apartment market and brisk business at the Metropolitan hotel made it possible last month for the Geis Cos. to secure an early refinancing of portions of The 9 complex on East Ninth Street.

Property records show that JP Morgan Chase & Co. closed Nov. 23 on a $77 million loan spanning the former Ameritrust tower, now home to 104 high-end apartments and the Metropolitan, and the project's main parking garage on Ninth.

Cuyahoga County can't recover millions lost in Ameritrust purchase, judge rules

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County's much ballyhooed legal effort to recover millions of taxpayer dollars lost in its purchase of the Ameritrust complex has been tossed out of court by a visiting judge who ruled its claims were filed too long after the corruption crisis surfaced.

Visiting Judge Patricia Cosgrove ruled that the case's May 2014 filing date exceeded the six-year statute of limitations.

Considering what was done with those buildings and the positive impact it has had, suing was a bit nervy.

Noticed this morning that the Cleveland Trust clock was being taken apart and worked on. I know they were interested in making it work again. Would be a cool feature to have run again!

So many things being fixed/cleaned for RNC visitors that were never fixed/cleaned for life-long Clevelanders....

It is a bit sad that it took the RNC to get some of these things done around the city.  But at least we'll be able to benefit from the upgrades, fixes, repairs, cleanings, etc after the RNC has come and gone.

Yeah, it just looks like paper inside there, so definitely looks like a temporary place holder.

Well, considering the time of the post, maybe it's just a digital clock proclaiming it to be 9 am!

I am trying to plan an event for my company and was in touch with someone at the 9 and to my surprise she said Vault is no longer open to the public and no longer a nightclub but just being used for private events. I found that very odd  That was part of the huge hype when that place opened. Anyone know what happened there?

My mom lives in the building. She said between Azure and Vault it was getting a little crazy and they decided to close Vault while they reevaluate. Vault may reopen as something different.

That makes sense. Hope they can make that work as a public space again because the space itself is really unique. Maybe less "clubby" more just bar/lounge. Thanks for the info!

The last couple times I ventured down there while showing people around it was empty.

A couple of weeks ago some friends from out of town were staying at The 9 after a wedding.  We went back with them for a few drinks (in the Vault & Azure).  I never got to see the Vault previously as a nightclub, but it was nice to see it now and we actually got a tour of some of the rooms that weren't "officially" open yet.  Crazy how many vaults were actually in the old bank!!!
