February 9, 20178 yr Tourism pros: Need bigger convention center, new 'HQ' hotel Bowdeya Tweh , [email protected] 6:37 a.m. ET Feb. 9, 2017 A new Downtown Cincinnati "headquarters" hotel and a larger convention center are the top items on a wish list of the region's largest tourism groups, officials from those organizations told The Enquirer on Wednesday. Expanding the Duke Energy Convention Center and finding an alternative to the existing Millennium Hotel were the top recommendations as part of a "destination assessment" funded by a Cincinnati destination marketing organization and the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky convention bureaus. http://www.cincinnati.com/story/money/2017/02/09/tourism-pros-need-bigger-convention-center-new-hq-hotel/97643496/
February 10, 20178 yr This kind of study strikes me a little like tunnel vision by people who would stand to land some subsidies if the recommendations were acted on. Couldn't we instead build tourism by protecting our historic architecture? (#savethedennison) Couldnt we expand tourism by having a more vibrant downtown (by adding 1000's of residents?) but no, here we have the 1980's solution, get locked in an arms race with competitor cities and expand the convention center. April 30, 20196 yr It seem like all of a sudden there are lots of Asian tourists in Cincinnati. Is this just my imagination? Is this a nationwide phenomenon?

There always seem to be a lot of foreigners with their kids down at Smale. I don't know if these people are tourists or immigrants or what. It gives the impression that Cincinnati is much more diverse than it is!

When I lived in Philly there were TONS of Asian tourists year round. I have noticed more Asian folks in Cincinnati in the past few months but not sure if they're tourists or residents. I know my apartment building downtown has a lot of South Asian families living in it.
March 14, 20232 yr More info on Cincinnati’s involvement in the 2026 WorldCup. I have also heard from a contact that Cincinnati will be hosting a “championship contender country” “We anticipate we will be hosting World Cup qualifiers and World Cup friendlies,” Berding said. “We will host one of the leading countries in Cincinnati. All of their fans will come to this region. The team will train at our headquarters. They’ll go to our great destinations and then drive to games in Kansas City, Philadelphia or Atlanta." https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2023/03/14/berding-expects-to-host-world-cup-qualifiers.html
March 14, 20232 yr I'm confused why Cincinnati would host World Cup Qualifiers. Canada, Mexico, and the US all automatically qualify for the World Cup as hosts, so a qualifier would have to be between two other countries thousands of miles away. That doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe he misspoke? Tune-up matches in the weeks leading up the World Cup are perfectly reasonable, too IMO. But qualifiers here would be strange. I could totally see a big team's HQ in Cincinnati. The FCC training facilities are one of the best in the country. It doesn't sound intuitive, but there are going to be 48 teams, and only 16 host cities. Every host city cannot headquarter 3 national teams.
March 14, 20232 yr ^ Even though the US/Mexico and Canada receive auto bids, the other countries need to qualify so they will still come play the US Team or the Canadian team in their quest to qualify. I assume he meant that these other teams would try and qualify even if it is only a friendly for the US Team.

They will likely play friendlies as tune-up matches, but none of those matches will matter for either team. As Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama, etc. fight each other for the remaining CONCACAF spots in the World Cup, they will not play a meaningful game against the three host countries.
