Curtains for State Theatre?

Defeat of levy followed by concert venue change

SANDUSKY - Two years after celebrating its 75th anniversary, the historic Sandusky State Theatre may be closing its doors.

A concert by pianist Peter Nero and his trio scheduled for 7:30 tonight has been moved from the downtown venue to the auditorium at Adams Junior High School, according to a recorded message that greeted callers to the theater yesterday.

I'm a Sandusky native, and it would be a terrible shame to see the State close its doors.  It's a jewel in a downtown with incredible potential.  They've finally started to make some headway on the residential end, and something like this could set that effort back in a significant way.

Well at least it is just now closing. So many other cites' theaters were left to sit and decay until water damage left them beyond repair.

The fact that residents did not approve a .25 mill levy which would have been like 10 dollars a year for a 100,000 home is kind of lousy.

Here's a better pic that ColDayMan took.  It's very pretty:

It's even nicer on the inside.  They just completed a renovation in the last five years or so.

Early 90's and 5 years ago?

I guess it was the early 90s.  Man time flies by.  I remember thinking the same thing when they started celebrating the 10th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind album.

One day you're starting grade school.  The following week, your kid is starting grade school. :-)

SANDUSKY - Burdened by $700,000 in debt and the defeat last week of a 0.25-mill levy for operations, the historic Sandusky State Theatre has closed its doors after 77 years of movies, concerts, and drama productions.

The Spanish-style theater on Columbus Avenue downtown hosted its last event Tuesday night, the Ebony Fashion Fair.

My MIL (mother-in-law) used to be on the board of one of Sandusky's cultural organizations that delt primarily with bringing Classical music to town, and art shows at the cultural center (attached to the high school).  She left it maybe 10 years ago after it was combined with some other boards and the classical music nature of things got brushed aside.  Back back in the day, Yo Yo Ma performed there as well as other big name people.  They would do a tie-in with Cleveland or Toledo, so an artist could hit the big city, then stop 60 miles away at Sandusky.  It worked for the city for awhile.

Not sure what is going on there now, but since I'm heading up there in an hour, I'll try to find out.
