May 15, 201213 yr Just heard from a co-worker who stood in line at lunch to get in. She said there are 4 lines all wrapping around the block to get in. Dang! WOW what great support....Cleveland Rocks....I cannot imagine once Phase II of the casino is built and all the other developments downtown (the flats, med mart) what kind of energy it would bring to all of Greater Cleveland....I love the news coverage of the casino...very exciting to see
May 15, 201213 yr I never say this, but I agree with MTS. Every once in a while he says something worthwhile! :yap: :yap:
May 15, 201213 yr Would it be a far fetched pipe dream to imagine that a hotel would try to above the Casino to capitalize on the Casino? HUH? There are TWO hotels attached to the Casino now. Or are you asking if a hotel will be attached to Phase II of the Casino?

May 15, 201213 yr I would imagine that it will be that way for the next few days. Pretty sure their GM said that they would be limiting capacity, @ 4K people or so, for the first few days so as not to overwhelm their workers. Probably in one of the PD's 50 articles about their opening. Hopefully they can ramp up capacity before the Tribe's weekend series. I would expect a whole lot of people to be coming in before and after those games.

I saw it last night. Drove by there around 9:00 PM, and the line literally went from the back entrance on West Prospect, north toward Superior (with a few strategic breaks in the line), then went west along the State Office Building clear to Huron. Just a little shy of a half mile according to the car odometer. I came back down after 11:00 PM and the line was not only just as long, but it was clearly much more denser. I do have pictures. On a side note: PHS - dead; East 4th - dead; WHD - relatively quiet

I would give last night a pass, as everyone was gearing up for this. Lets see what happens over the next six months.
May 15, 201213 yr Just tried to get in and there are lines at all entrances. The Tower City entrance down below wasn't too bad but wrapped around a couple times. I must say the amount of pedestrian traffic around downtown right now is great! Including Tower City. I hope this keeps up. Great to see so much life!

Or are you asking if a hotel will be attached to Phase II of the Casino? Actually a few says ago, Gilbert mentioned that another hotel (presumably brand new) maybe coming related to Phase II... Not sure where, though.

May 15, 201213 yr The only way more hotels will be built is if demand is there. If there's enough demand to build more, we will see them, but financing for them is so tough...it would be a few years down the line.
May 15, 201213 yr I tried to take a picture out of the front of Key Tower windows but the people are all in the shade and I am far up enough that it just looks dark, you can't tell it's people. But yes, it's wrapping around the E side of the building and up behind it on to the Prospect side.
May 15, 201213 yr Is the first floor of the Higbee Bldg still intact with all the columns, etc.? I think that would make for a grand European-style casino unlike the big box crap like Mountaineer, etc. Put the nickel slots in the bargain basement, and reopen the Silver Grille as a signature restaurant, then we've got a more unique and upscale attraction. Leave the tacky box casinos out at the horse tracks, not in downtown, please.
May 15, 201213 yr Still hoping for something in the Corner where the Sherwin Williams billboard is(former Lebron James billboard). I saw an old rendering for that spot that shows something significant could work there. And it could work well with Dan Gilberts "Mini Time Square" idea.

May 15, 201213 yr ^That would not limit the ability to build there. Would be difficult but Tower City is built over the tracks. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
May 15, 201213 yr WHOA!! :-o what is that?! That thing is huge....but wouldn't be a reality here to large.
May 15, 201213 yr Congrats on the being the first the open. Cincy would like an advance on your tax receipts. We got some stuff we need to fix up. How many points?!!? fuggedaboutit
May 15, 201213 yr That would make for an intimidating prow when the city takes to the seas to conquer other nations.
May 15, 201213 yr Traffic on the sidewalk (the line to get in at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday)..... Traffic on the street (at Ontario and Prospect) with traffic cops making it worse.... May 15, 201213 yr WHOA!! :-o what is that?! That thing is huge....but wouldn't be a reality here to large. Wasn't that to be the Courtyard Hotel? I think the rendering is "enhanced" as the building is/was suppose to mesh with it's neighbor.
May 15, 201213 yr Traffic on the sidewalk (the line to get in at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday)..... Traffic on the street (at Ontario and Prospect) with traffic cops making it worse.... I'm not really sure how to interpret those large crowds...will that take away from the other entertainment options downtown, or are the lines just long like this because it's the beginning of the casino opening. I hope it's the latter and everyone benefits but I am a little skeptical now

May 15, 201213 yr The Gateway at Landmark 1989 Rendering That almost looks like a "Vegas style" building!!! I know that "The Gateway at Landmark" building wont be built, but something on that corner would be nice. As Phase II is being built, that piece of "property" might become more and more valuable. So hopefully something will built on that corner.

I think it's just because the casino just opened, but will/should show those coming in that downtown is a fine place to come, and when they don't feel like standing in line for one of the 4 dining options, they will go elsewhere nearby.

May 15, 201213 yr It will generate initial flurry of excitement and then people will go to other places. I'm not surprised that on a Monday night, when many restaurants are dark because business is notoriously slow, they were dead. You could have gone last Monday and they probably would have been largely dead, too. I'm actually going to now avoid the casino for awhile because it sounds too busy to be enjoyable at this point. We may go see the Avengers this Friday instead. I haven't seen a film in a real theater since I can't tell you when. I think the Hangover (the original) was the last time.

I couldn't remember the name but know the SW was behind it. thanks for refreshing my memory.
May 15, 201213 yr Oh of course not. I just mean we're going to wait maybe a month or so before checking it out, til the aforementioned "initial flurry" dies down. I will mosey by there for lunch maybe thur or fri this week but I am sure as hell not waiting in line to eat at any casino unless bobby flay is cooking my lunch or something.
May 15, 201213 yr Ditto! Plus, the amount of people allowed in will be doubling which will get rid of the line issue.
May 15, 201213 yr Was the inside of the Higbee Bldg the same one utilized in the Christmas Story? Yes

May 15, 201213 yr As long as the lines are long the Casino will continue with the 5,000 people at a time rule to ease workers in and make people feel comfortable. Also their are only 5,000 seats in there
May 15, 201213 yr The casino is a new toy right now. I've read that other cities with downtown casinos -- Pittsburgh, Detroit -- say that the crowds drop down to working levels in 3-6 months. I expect, though, that there will be a permanement buzz around Horseshoe -- not the currently lines, but a significant buzz; a 24-hour buzz that, obviously, even the old Higbee's Co. didn't have. As for WHD and E. 4th being "dead", I seriously doubt the casino is sucking people from those areas. Those areas, esp WHD, still have an ebb 'n flow that's still driven by such things as dinner hour, warm weather, Cavs/Indians games and, of course, Friday and Saturday nights -- unfortunately, even though downtown is much better than in recent years, we're still not the pulsating 24/7 downtown we all want -- not yet, anyway. ... I see the casino as attracting its own crowd with many new-opportunity patrons: those who otherwise would not come downtown, but for the casino. Some of those will flake off and go to existing restaurants and entertainment, but I suspect, many will be one-and-done, casino-focused visitors... Hope I'm wrong.
May 15, 201213 yr ^ Just to be clear. I said WHD was "quiet". And yes, everything else was D.E.A.D. But that was at 11:30 PM on a Monday night with nothing else (except the obvious) going on. I only brought it up because it felt particularly odd walking literally from a dead East 4th, around the corner, and smack dab into hundreds of people everywhere. It was just an anecdotal observation and not meant to imply the there was a sucking sound coming once again from Tower City
May 15, 201213 yr Here is the most simple answer to everyones concerns. East 4th was mostly closed at 11:30 pm! Most of those places close at 10 pm on monday. So relax
May 15, 201213 yr Right..there were still plenty of people everywhere when I was walking home from getting Chinese around 9:30, but my normal walk includes not seeing anyone down Euclid from 12th to 9th. There were people walking down every street from E12 to Public Square.

May 16, 201213 yr What happened to all of the tree planters that you see in the rendering that would surround the Higbee, especially along the Ontario side and around the corner. I am hoping they are still in the plans. I am wondering if they held off on them because of the initial crowds that are lining the sidewalks. Maybe they are thinking there would not be as much room. The trees would definitely brighten the outside up a bit. Too much cement going on.
