Can't wait until all the grannies on the way to the casino end up in the bus lanes on Euclid.

Though the casino will be open 24 hours... does that mean that they are allowed to serve alcohol for 24 hours?

No, service ends at 2:30am just like everyone else, and they are actually barred from giving out free drinks

"The Ohio chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was among groups that pushed for strict alcohol standards at Ohio casinos. The law, signed by Gov. Ted Strickland on Thursday, bans both free drinks and 24-hour liquor sales at casinos, stopping them at 2:30 a.m., the same as bars." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37692840/ns/us_news-life/t/free-cocktails-dying-call-casinos/

Because cutting people off at 2:30 a.m. and sending them home is just the trick to keep drunk people out of their cars...  :wtf:

Who said anything about sending them home?

The casino is 24-hrs.

No alcohol from 2:30-6:30 AM I believe.

^^Doesn't matter, MADD is a thinly veiled temperance society.  Their goal isn't to stop drunk driving, it's to stop drinking.

Welcome to Downtown Cleveland.  We have a casino.  That is all.

Welcome to Downtown Cleveland.  We have a casino.  That is all.

Oh, and Tower City.

It is so easy to criticize other people's efforts.

Yes if you are standing in THAT SPOT on W. 6th the major attraction and of most interest to those in said entertainment district and in the pointed direction is Tower City and the Casino (maybe the state office tower since there are many public agencies in the building).

I believe these types of signs (similar to those on freeways) only make sense if they point out attractions nearby and try to direct people to them.  Sure Progressive Field and the Q are in that general direction, but adding them would make the sign too cluttered and they are really too far away for such a sign to make sense.  One closer to those attractions would work better.

I think it would be a great idea to put up a large map attached to a steel post on the sidewalk outside of the Public Square entrance of Horseshoe Casino.  It would be a great reference guide to point out exactly where the WHD, Ohio City, Tremont, Playhouse Square, University Circle, Little Italy, Shaker Square is...It could encourage people to walk to the closer destinations or take the Healthline or Rapid to the further locations.

Something along the lines of the images below.  Even better would be if it were somehow interactive with picture/video/audio details of each neighborhood.

There is one right across the street, at the Health Line Station. All you would really need to do is make a copy of that.

Honestly folks we're talking about two different things.  "Way finding" signs and "kiosks".

The "way finding" signs are fine.  HOWEVER, What needs to take place is an over all design of streetscape items.

  • Benches/seating
  • Bike Racks
  • Hanging items attached to lightpoles (ie.  flower baskets and event flags)
  • Information Kiosk
  • Lightpoles
  • Trash receptacles
  • Newsboxes
  • Planters
  • Signage (street, park, parking signs, wayfinding)
  • Tree pits

There needs to be a standard for the city and each district.

food looks good.

I like the hours of operation and the food pricing isnt bad at all.....

All of the flags have been put up on the flagpoles on the Higbee building.  I was driving so I couldn't snap any pics.  They are all the same: black flags with just the Horseshoe logo in gold.  I was really hoping the flags would add a little more color to this stretch of downtown but they don't look too bad overall.

I know the concept doesn't really mesh with Horseshoe but flags of a bunch of different countries would look really cool imo.

Did someone say Black Flag?

Nothing new here, but was in Cleveland this weekend so snapped some pics while I was downtown. Figured I'd post. Was nice to finally see it in person.

FWIW, the way finding signs have been going up all over downtown, and they do point to more than just the casino :).

Welcome to Downtown Cleveland.  We have a casino.  That is all.

Oh, and Tower City.

The other signs around town list many other things. Check out the one on Prospect near Playhouse Square.

I love the signs.

Random!

The black flags look really nice, though I wish they were larger... maybe even banners hanging down and weighted at the bottom so that they don't fly all over and become ripped/tangled.

I also hope that the Titled Kilt will consider hanging banners down the side of the parking garage above it, to distract from the "beauty" of the garage.

In regard to the flags.  They used the same size flags on the giant flag poles at the PS and Prospect entrances as those along Ontario.  It has the effect of making the flag seem extremely small.  Really needs to be much larger on these two spots.

Was downtown last night (checked out a few innings of the ball game) with some friends.  On our way out, I snapped a few pics of the casino.  The facade facing Ontario Street looked nice.

thanks for the great post....AWESOME

People are right...those flags are way too small.

Indeed... they are much larger in the rendering.

That seriously looks incredible, I thought it was a rendering at first

I agree!!  The pics look good  :-D  AND  wish the flags were bigger :x.

I think the flags are appropriately sized.  It's about the building, not those flags.

If my memory serves me correct, Higbee's never had over-sized flags.

The Flags along Ontario are fine, probably right size for that stretch.  It's the ones that are currently over the entrances that are ridiculous.  Way, WAY, to small.

I'm literally Laughing out loud at how small those flags are and how ridiculous they look. They need to be at least six times bigger than that!

If my memory serves me correct, Higbee's never had over-sized flags.

I remember clearly that Higbee's draped the whole avenue in very large American flags on several occasions in the late 80s and early 90s.  - It looked terrific.

I agree the flags are under scaled. They need to be redone to the size featured in the initial renderings

LOL@those flags. You'll need a telescope to see them from the street and tweezers to fold them.

When is this thing opening? Looking good from what I can see.

^Monday May 14th

16 days until the excitement  begins...

Here are some questions I have been thinking about and could not find answers to on the website:

Is the casino, like many across the country, strictly 21+ only?

Or will there be some wiggle room for parents that bring there kids to show them the sites?

Or will it be determined by the time of day?

Common sense answers this for me, but I was looking for policy in writing

I dont know if this has been posted on UO, either on this thread or some other, but there were signs at the surface parking lot across from the Renaisasnce Hotel saying that Monday 4/30/12 would be the last day that lot was open to the public. This is the lot bordered by W. 3rd and W. Superior and Frankfort. I dont know if it includes the parking spaces all the way to W. 6th (where that old old building was razed last year).

When I asked the attendant what was going on he said the Casino bought it.

Again, this might be common knowledge on UO but it was the first that I had heard this.

If this is actually true this cannot be good news.  I would assume they are looking for more parking (maybe for employees) not development.  Isn't this where the RTA project was suppose to go which we were talking about just a few months ago.

Are you talking about The Parking Lot On Public Square owned by the Jacobs Group, or the Weston-owned parking lots on the NW corner of West 3rd and Superior? Neither of those are shown as sold recently on the county auditor's website.

BTW, the parking lot where the old parking deck was demolished was about about 1-2 years ago by Forest City Enterprises.

^ and ^^

This is not the Jacobs-owned parking lot on Public Square. It is  the other that was a proposed RTA Transit Center just last fall(?).

The signs are pretty cut and dry, even saying something to the effect that you're SOL if your car remains in the lot after Monday.

The attendant said "the Casino bought it".

I hear ya. If it has sold, it hasn't been recorded in county property data records.

I just saw a blurb about the West Side Transit Center getting ready to break ground...or something along those lines.

Off to Google....

.....and I'm back

From the recent freshwater Cleveland article

"But perhaps one of the most exciting developments is the hope of a West Side Transit Center to mirror the East Side’s Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center. RTA’s plan to build atop one of the Warehouse District’s barren surface lots recently was approved by the neighborhood board and will soon seek potential developers with the help of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance. The plan calls for 39,500 square feet of ground floor retail, 183,600 square feet of mid- to low-rise housing, a garage for 540 cars, and just 4,800 square feet needed for transit center"

They can't be already breaking ground, the thing hasn't even been designed has it?  Apart from those very basic renderings?

That was just my Swiss cheese memory of the article, but I'm would have to think that the RTA had a pretty solid option to buy before all of this planning took place.

The fact that something potentially is about to happen on that lot is thrilling but I am concerned about the Casino being involved... I hope we get this cleared up quick!

It would be illegal for RTA could do this without board approval, including the invitation of bids and approval of same. Nothing has come before the board to give staff the authority to even invite bids, let alone awarding them.
