May 14th is probably the "hard opening" isn't it (if I remember my terms from "Ocean's 13) and they could well have people in earlier for a soft opening. That's probably why the buffet is ready and the gift shop is ready.

May 14th is probably the "hard opening" isn't it (if I remember my terms from "Ocean's 13) and they could well have people in earlier for a soft opening. That's probably why the buffet is ready and the gift shop is ready.

This isn't a restaurant opening, where they could do something like this.  The casino's opening date is that opening date, period!  To paraphrase, the gaming commission by law sets the date, once all legal requirements have been met.

They cannot have people gambling before X date.  My sources tell me they have had people into the buffet for testing, yet they are strictly prohibited from the Casino floor.

^Actually, I do believe there is sort of a "soft opening" of the casino where people have been invited to gamble and inspectors from the state are all over the place to observe.  I think people are allowed to keep their winnings but the casino has to donate any profit to charity.  I would imagine there would be a testing of the restaurants at the same time.  I don't know if this has occurred already or is taking place in the next few days.

I've been working in Nebraska for a few months, and the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs, Iowa is sending a few people to Cleveland to train dealers.  they leave on Wednesday.

My sources tell me regulators are to be there on the May 3 for up to a week to certify/(re)inspect machines and people.  I know people have already been to the buffet, hence last weeks coverage.

Just like at the Schofield today, there were workers at the Stanley Block inside and outside doing more activity than I've seen there in the last several months (although the building still looks the same at first glance). They're either preparing for demo or doing some of the "diligent" repairs necessary that are to be performed by this Sunday May 6. Those May 6th "efforts" listed in Pianka's ruling include hiring an asbestos expert and also having workers inspect the facade for safety. It would appear that's what they are doing.

Either way, it looks like a week after that (that'd be Sunday May 13) is the day that this all comes to a decision point...on the 13th, a demo permit must be obtained or the 2 efforts must be reported on.

Clock is ticking.

Oh nothing.... just driving around wasting time

Wow! Stunning pics and colors!!

That billboard is freakin obnoxious as all hell.

Yeah, pretty heinous.  Kind of incongruous with the classy Phase I aura, IMHO. Not really sure what the purpose is either, because it's not really visible from the highway (is it?), so the only people who will see it are those who will be passing the casino (or entering it) anyway.  Though I guess they'll have promotions and special deals they'll want to burn into people's retinas.

Maybe they'll have a "outdoor movie night" on the lawn. ;)

I actually think it brings some energy to the area

it is visible from phase II casino.

Someone just has to complain about something.

So I'll ask, why is is "heinous" and "obnoxious"?

What are the negatives of this billboard facing south?  This is on an existing parking deck not attached to the Higbee's building and does not take away from it's beauty.  How is it different than the other large billboards in downtown?

I cannot see the pictures here at the workplace, but I dont think that this video board is that bad. I actually think it could've been bigger. I'm wondering what the pictures look like that everybody is referencing as garish...

Many more people than just those going to the casino see this since there are various reasons why someone might be driving or walking on W. Huron or Ontario or on the Lorain-Carnegie bridge (from which it s visible). It does add energy.

The soft opening is May 10 from 3pm-10. We received invites for being Cavs season ticket holders. And yes, we are allowed to keep our winnings and the casino winnings go to charity. Although I'm sure they will still 'ask' us to donate to charity as well, if I win anything that is.

I got no notification about this. I need to check with relatives.

^^I just have a visceral dislike for extremely bright electronic billboards; it's nothing specific to this site. I think gottaplan's "obnoxious" sums up my reaction best. YMMV.

That corner is shaping up to be such a hysterical urban design clusterf&ck that it's actually kind of endearing: the 90 year-old vacant site/blank wall on the edge of the landmark office buildings, partially hidden by the giant post-Lebron banner; the failed Gateway-era development site that's been a kind of weird, underused, urban garden since 1994; and now this big bright glowing casino beacon.  I could imagine Phase II changing things a bit though.

I just think its out of scale for the building.

^^ It's really not that bright. But I understand your points.

Without seeing the pictures, Im going to go out on a limb and say that there is some kind of photography artifact going on.

Yes, I did use a filter.

Its as bright as the Quicken Loans Arena sign, but at least 5x bigger.... sooooo, yeah. There you go.

This was approved at a joint meeting of the Downtown\Flats Design Review Committee & City Planning Commission on August 19. The same meeting the pedestrian bridge was proposed. One could guess with all the hoopla over the bridge the video wall took a back seat.

Go back and check out the renderings here: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2011/08192011/index.php

Here are three for the video wall

I'll reserve judgment till I see it in person, but I've been hearing from friends that it looks great and enhances the big-city feel quite a bit.

... I could imagine Phase II changing things a bit though.

It is a big sign, but I like it, better than just looking at the side of the parking garage.  I also agree that it may fit into the area a bit better as Phase II is built.  But it sort of helps "move" the feel of that area towards an entertainment area that has a 24 hour casino.

I like the sign...its very lively....:-) GO Horseshoe Casino Cleveland...

It's really had to view and critique the billboard in a picture, who has seen OPERATIONAL in person?

It was operating last night when I took the picture. As I said before. It is as bright at the Quicken Loans sign... Just five times bigger

It's just rolling advertisements.  It's as large as it is so people can see it from the freeway.  They were advertising the # of tables for world series of poker, the banquet, etc and of course the number to call with a gambling addiction.  Nothing crazy.

I've seen it. Looks fine to me. You can see it from the freeway and obviously all the way down Ontario.

I was walking down my street in Tremont last night, when I saw flashes of light in the sky.  At first I thought it might be lightning or fireworks from the stadium, but then I realized the Tribe wasn't at home, and when I looked closer to the horizon I could see part of the screen itself.  That thing is BRIGHT.

Great pics! They're almost HDR-like. You could sell these, I'd get a print. Brightlights! Bigcity!

Love bright lights! Nothing says "big city" like bright lights. I went down there to see the screen and I love it.

trying to stay positive, I like the lighting scheme of Higbees building.  To me, that enhances the big city experience.

I just can't get exited about an electronic billboard, either positively or negatively

I wish the PlayhouseSquare billboard was the same as this one.  The casino billboard makes the PS one look...  not as good.

^Yea it's time for those Playhouse Square billboards to be updated.  They did not age well...technology has progressed so much in the decade or so they've been up.

In other news, the casino license has been issued.  All's clear for May 14!  Fire up the slots!!

I fixed that for you!

ummm lol...thanks

I have talked to countless suburbanites, some who havnt been downtown in who knows how long, and this is the first real attraction that they are willing and wanting to go downtown for.  I have a feeling opening day will b insane!

I really cannot wait to see the traffic Downtown. I'm going to avoid driving Downtown and go to a Park & Ride Location and jump on the rapid transit...walk through TowerCity Center, go over to the casino for about 2 maybe 3 hours... The opening is on a Monday I cannot imagine how many people will be out on the weekend
