^I don't think there's a mandate there, just permission on specified sites.  Nobody is required to build a casino anywhere.

^ i am very pro the casino being right where it is. its ideal and better than i would have ever imagined. however, after the absolute lie about a phase II (i mean come on lets face it thats true), the insane teardowns and now the eyesore skywalk on the way, i am certainly having my doubts.

if its doing well i still hope there is a phase II someday and in the grand casino scheme it all works out well, because it still could end up quite grand.

There will have to be a phase II (or something else) built on the site- Gilbert paid $85 mil for the land... and I don't think anyone would pay that amount of money and let the land sit there undeveloped.

Regard the walkway... it sucks but I think the amount of foot traffic taken off the street will be minimal.

I don't believe Gilbert "lied" about phase 2, but also remember he wanted to keep phase 1 open as well, essentially building 2 casinos connected by Tower City.  So I believe there was a real intent to build phase 2, but I also believe the market changed when racinos were approved by the state legislature.  Different ballgame now.  There still may be a move towards phase 2, but I bet they are waiting to learn more about the Cleveland and Ohio gambling market, and for the racino's full impact to be realized, before plunking down the $600M needed to construct phase 2.  That's just good business.  If there's anyone to blame it's not Gilbert but the state legislature and governor for allowing racinos without a vote.  That changed the gaming market and I think the demand for phase 2.

^Gilbert is to blame for the Columbia, the Stanley Block, and that walkway.  Based on that track record, I'm not really upset if he doesn't do any more developments downtown

translation: Horseshoe is too small... Phase I that is.... bummer.

I kinda miss the old Higbee's mezzanine.  It would have made an interesting bar or cafe space overlooking the action on the ground floor. Is there ananything up there now?  It appears to have been walled off, looking up from below.

For what its worth:

One of my friends down here in New Orleans used to manage dealers for the WSOP, and travel with them until she had a child.  She still stays in contact with them, and I think her husband works for them in some capacity.

She said this cancellation is really, really weird.  A lot of the workers and players had booked flights already. All they got was a terse e-mail saying "It has been cancelled"

One thing I did not know, WSOP is owned by Ceasar's entertainment. They only go to Ceaser's properties, with a few exceptions of casino's that were on the tour before Caesars bought the tour.

The only thing she can think of is that someone at the CLE casino, "really, really dropped the ball."

IF that is true, and it was not a space issue, there is no reason the tour won't come back in the future.  So, that is the good news.  The bad news is that when it does come back, a lot of the people who follow this tour may not jump on the chance to come to Cleveland because of this year's cancellation.

Finally saw the walkway the other day. It is an ugly behemoth. I don't bemoan the casino folks for it. If no one was using the shuttle bus from the Welcome Center to the casino, then there would be no need for a walkway either. But the fact that anyone would use a bus to travel less than one street block is one of the most silly, mind-blowing things and I cannot wrap my head around that.

The Pixar movie WAL-E nailed it when predicting the future of humans -- mobile La-Z-Boys to transport us everywhere. What a class-action clusterf*ck this society is.

I've always disagreed that the drive thru at a bank or fast food place is a symptom of laziness.  It's more of a desire to restrict extraneous interaction.  I suspect the use of the bus to go one block is the same.

We'll see....if the use of the bus does not decline with the skywalk open it is probably laziness.

Casino Skywalk to Open on New Year’s Eve

http://fox8.com/2013/12/28/casino-skywalk-to-open-on-new-years-eve/

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Horseshoe Casino Skywalk will open up on New Year’s Eve, according to the casino’s Facebook page.

The Skywalk runs diagonally across the Ontario Street and Prospect Avenue intersection downtown, allowing guests to cross from the Collection Auto Group Centre to the second floor of the casino.

Could have been better, could have been worse.  The design seems to blend in somewhat, and while the glass does not, it makes sense from a security perspective.

So I guess Phase l is officially done.

I'm surprised they shut down today, on a day when a lot of people won't be working.

Horseshoe Casino Cleveland Adding Flashy New Sports Bar with 42 Electronic Table Games

Published by Julie Kent on May 13, 2014 - 4:16pm

Late this summer, the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland will unveil the latest addition to its downtown location - a large, new sports bar featuring 42 electronic table games. Dubbed "TAG Bar", the 2,000-square virtual gaming center and lounge will open in time for the Cleveland Browns season opener in late sumer.

TAG Bar will be located on the casino's second floor at the skywalk entrance, which has become the casino's main entrance. Electronic table games will be embedded into the top of the large bar, and the bar area will include 16 flat screen TVs above the bar, in addition to 20 flat screen TVs around the area.

Each electronic table game includes craps, blackjack, and roulette. You can play as an individual or as a group, with people placing bets within a specific time frame.

The renovation also involves moving the 2nd floor Total Rewards desk near the entrance and relocating table games to where slot machines once were. In all, the renovation will cost $4.2 million.

I am actually surprised something like this was never in the original setup. Being such an avid sports city there will definitely be an audience for this (even without a sports book).

Should be nice, but let's face it, sports bars are a dime-a-dozen in a sports crazed city like Cleveland -- there's probably 50 within a 10 min walk of the casino (and that's probably conservative)... Also, there are 2 bar/sports lounge areas (with flat-screens) already in Horseshoe (multiple screens on the 1st level).  I am curious about this new video table game, though.

This is much welcomed. Tho use two lounges/bars in there now are a joke.

That was one of the non-gaming related complaints many people I've spoke to had. Lack ofplaces to sit and people watch.

^Really?  The 2nd floor bar-lounge is my people watching perch.  Love the couches and cushy chairs.

Horseshoe Casino Cleveland is a sound approach to urban gaming development with mixed results

June 16, 2015

SCOTT SUTTELL

MANAGING EDITOR

Forbes.com calls attention to a white paper that looks at development trends in urban casinos, including Cleveland’s.

The bottom line of the paper from consulting firm Global Market Advisors partner Andrew Klebanow, says Forbes.com, is that casinos “should connect with their surroundings” and those that do “can lend their enormous visitor pull to spur urban revival.”

How’s Cleveland doing on that count? It’s a mixed bag.

The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland “was originally planned as a temporary facility. It soon evolved into a permanent casino and represents an adaptive reuse of an urban commercial development,” Klebanow writes.

He notes that the property “does not offer lodging and has limited dining, primarily due to the constraints of the building and site footprint. These constraints were turned into attributes. Rather than attempt to engineer a hotel and additional dining outlets, the company entered into marketing agreements with other downtown hotels as well as neighboring restaurants. This served multiple purposes: It reduced the developer’s investment costs and allowed neighboring businesses to benefit from their proximity to the casino.”

So far, so good.

But the Cleveland casino “does operate with a number of constraints that limits its ability to positively impact the surrounding area,” according to Klebanow.

And then he delivers a critique of the casino’s controversial pedestrian walkway.

“It is not a particularly porous property, with only two entrances,” he writes. “Parking, located in garages across the street, at first drove a considerable amount of foot traffic onto the street grid; however, a recently completed overhead walkway now diverts this patron traffic off the streets, thereby negatively impacting the various restaurants and stores that could ostensibly benefit from that traffic.”

The Horseshoe Cleveland tweeted this and I've seen this logo elsewhere. Aren't they supposed to be dropping the Horseshoe brand soon? Wasn't sure if this was related to anything? Or just a standard advertisement. ea90032a9859ff11c3dc7ad3b1aec423.jpg

It's changing to Rock gaming. That's assumedly what the _ _ CK means. I believe it will still be called Horseshoe. What's changing is the ownership, from Caesar's to Rock.

When they announced the full buyout by Rock Gaming last year, they said that the name would indeed be changing

I just got a letter from them as a Caesar's Total Rewards customer explaining the transition and there was zero mention of any name change coming.

"But since the Horseshoe Casino name is a Caesar’s brand, the sites in two of Ohio’s largest cities will undergo name changes…yet to be determined."

I don't doubt that's what they originally said. Just saying there was zero mention of it in my letter.

The change of the name wouldn't really affect customers of the Total Rewards program, so they probably didn't think it was pertinent to put in there.

Also, why would they tweet out a picture of a four letter word ending in "_ _ C K"? Two of the three words that first come to mind when I see that are rather obscene

Yes, I assume that was the point. That's how advertising works, titillate you, get your attention. Kind of like the FCUK clothing company.

I think they didn't put the name change in there because they haven't decided on the name yet, but the rewards program is changing much more quickly, so they had to let people know about that. I assume if and when there is a name change it will be announced in a separate letter. Of *course* changing the actual name of the place the letter you are receiving is about would be relevant. If someone bought Civilization coffee house and intended to change the name but instead, first sent a letter to the coffee rewards people to let them know how the rewards program was changing, but didn't tell them the name of the actual coffee shop was changing, that would be kind of weird. The only reason I can think of is they haven't decided on a name change yet.

Did AC/DC buy the naming rights?

Did AC/DC buy the naming rights?

Haha. "Jack" already means so many different things. Most have a very negative connotation.

That's pretty terrible

WTF?  Rock actually made a lot of sense.  But would it cause confusion with the Rockcino?

That's just terrible.

Is JACK an acronym for something?

"JACK" = Just Another Cleveland Kickdown

Is JACK an acronym for something?

"Crap, guys, what should we call it??"

"Just Another Casino K?"

"JACK, perfect, break for lunch."

What an unbelievably terrible name.

I can see how they're trying to make it campaignable and build a personality around it, but unfortunately, that personality is very firmly the bro-douche.

This may not lose them any customers, but it certainly won't win any...

My hovercraft is full of eels

There is no way that went through  any sort of focus group.

I finally watched that video. I can't even. Wow, that's horrible.

I finally watched that video. I can't even. Wow, that's horrible.

You are not kidding. The video, it's so bad it makes me never want to go there again. How is that even possible?

Seriously. I kept expecting the topic shifting to either erectile dysfunction or hair club.

Yes! I mean, I've done some cheesy corporate videos in my time, but this was really not good in so very many ways. If this was the best outfit they could sell to, it makes me think the whole casino situation must be doing much, much worse than anyone expected.

Wow I thought that video was just something funny someone posted here... and then i went back and watched it and realized it was actual real promotional material.  WOW.  Can we just close the whole thing and turn it back into a department store?  Is it too late for that option? :)

Does this in any shape Build phase 2 sooner?

Copy and pasting from a cleveland.com poster's copy and paste:

"According to Darlene Monzo, JACK’s chief marketing officer, JACK is an attitude and a way of thinking. “JACK is the voice of adventure,” she said, “It is that rare friend who entices you to step outside of your comfort zone, forget your fears, have fun and live in the moment, for the moment.”

“JACK is the future of entertainment,” said Matt Cullen, chief executive officer of JACK Entertainment. “Our new brand represents our company’s progressive spirit, our pursuit of excellence and our desire to deliver our guests with unexpected, delightful experiences every day.”

I love it. Mel Brooks couldn't write funnier material.
