Does this in any shape Build phase 2 sooner?

Guess Phase two can be moved to cancelled.

"Cullen also put to rest any hope for a new casino — long called Phase II — any time soon along the Cuyahoga River, though he said the company will continue to invest in the city.

“We’re very committed to that site (on the Cuyahoga River) and we’re definitely going to pursue a mixed-use development on that site,” Cullen said. “At this point, our sense is the gaming market in Northeast Ohio doesn’t support additional capacity. So we’ll be exploring what type of project does make sense over time.”

That's fine honestly. A mixed use development will probably wind up bringing a lot more benefits to the city anyway.

This was inevitable when they didn't move Thistledown.

I would rather have a mixed use expansion of Tower City and heavy residential development than a casino.  It can have room for entertainment and shows connected to the casino but i don't think the gambling focus is the answer.  Tower City really is the next step here, if a major renovation and reorganization/expansion could materialize, it would be a game changer.

Well by looks of that promo detroit and cinci are in the same boat on the name-change at least. Its better than the other casino name idea TOOL, i suppose.

Looking at the comments, it's nice to see that us Clevelanders aren't off base in our criticism here:

Jack Wagon! *ded*

"So will going down to the casino be known as "Jackin' It"?"

OMG ded.

I cannot imagine how this got approved. Wow.

it'll be funny when people start spray painting 'off' on billboards and signs around town

Live for the moment? Anyone wanna JACK it this weekend?

I didn't think it could get any worse than Horseshoe. I was wrong

They even teased it with "_ _ CK" billboards.  The jokes write themselves.

The renaming was due to Ceasars value as a company tanking from their high in 2014. They filed for Chapter 11 in 2015 and the name change was required when the company divested of several locations. But this is a terrible naming choice... and all of their Horseshoe locations that opened in recent memory haven't been doing nearly as well as their lofty projections (as I predicted before any of them opened). That's how they convinced the state to go along with the whole ploy.

^ Yeah, I'd bet mostly everyone here predicted that they wouldn't meet their lofty expectations

^ Just to clarify those expectations were made before they shoved 7 Racinos down our throats without a vote. Which also killed Phase 2.  Without the Racinos Phase 2 would most likely be underway or complete by now.

I'm not even sure that the elimination of the racinos would have done much. Pretty much all states around Ohio offer gambling of some sort (Kentucky has horses) and many of those casinos (riverboats in Indiana and those in the panhandle of West Virginia especially) are declining sharply. You can only build so many gambling facilities.

Phase two would be better off not as a casino extension but as something that the public can truly use - residential, for instance, is a much better plan than more slots.

Worst. Name. Ever.  So when someone gets jacked anywhere in/near the casino I can only imagine the fun the media will have.  I hope this name change does not happen before the RNC, but I bet they want the new branding in place before then.  This is so jacked up.

If you thought the concept was bad, just take a look at the execution!

This is amateur beyond belief. Will the downtown rebranding be any better...?

OMG. No. No.

A few years ago I proposed a mock award for worst architect in Ohio (The "Brady Award" named in dishonor of fictional t.v. architect Mike Brady). I now propose an award for horrendously bad taste. And right now I've got to say it's a toss up between Mr. Geiss for the stunningly bad Screaming EAgle concept and Mr. Gilbert for this laughably bad "Jack" campaign.

At least they aren't hand drawn signs

One element of their new signage plan, see more here.

^Oh you're bad... very, very bad!!

OMG clicking through those pics, the proposed JACK sign down the corner of the higbee building at Prospect is HORRIBLE!  :x

I don't know if there's a way to make it NOT horrible. I just can't believe this is actually a thing.

The desecration of the Higbee Building continues...

They are filling in windows with cinder blocks preparing for the installation of the new JACK signage:

For f*ck sake, please tell me this isn't happening?!?!

I have seen classier truck stop casinos

I mean, at least they're just continuing to ruin that corner lol.

You guys are overreacting. It's not like they want to erect some huge, tacky pair of 5,000 pound dice at the intersection!

All I can say is ... At least all of this can be undone. One day

C'mon folks, this is vibrant!  Pictures of downtown in the old days are filled with big gaudy signs.  They disappeared when everything else did.

I mean, at least they're just continuing to ruin that corner lol.

LOL you're right...the walkway is amazing and the signage is the best it can be lol. To me, it just doesn't look classy at all. I will say, the red lighting strip may be cool.

I actually really like all the other changes and I think the red color theme on the flags and awnings looks sharp. I don't even mind the new JACK signs at the entrances. I just don't understand why this is needed. I thought the old Horseshoe logo at the top of the building on that corner looked classy and fit in with the building quite well. Why not do something similar?

I mean, at least they're just continuing to ruin that corner lol.

Haha, here's some nostalgia for all of us....

How did this vertical sign pass the design review commission?  Cinder blocked windows unacceptable for this historic gem.

Here's the case report from Design Review. Doesn't give too much detail unfortunately. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/dompdf/domPrint.php

^Why are people so upset about the cinder blocked windows!? They'll be obstructed by the "JACK" signage and can easily be demo'ed if they ever remove the signage.

This is all temporary stuff people.  Those cinderblocks can be removed in 2 hours.

I think folks are overreacting to the JACK sign.  It's not that bad to me and, in fact, the bright red neon is an attraction.  The beautiful building that is Higbee's is still very much visible and intact.  And even as much as I hate to admit it, I've even gotten used to the GD skywalk over Ontairo/Prospect.

The cinderblocks may be temporary but were no reason necessary.

Yes they were, most likely for the letters in the sign to anchor to. Otherwise they'd have to drill into the facade of the actual Higbees building and THAT would be permanent damage.

The sign went up today:

That plywood in the window bothers me more than the sign.

I noticed windows had been replaced on the north side of the building recently. Hopefully that means they'll be doing the same for the rest of the building.

We are complaining about the cinder blocks meanwhile forgetting the most egregious eyesore - the human gerbil tube right below it

The SIGN was unnecessary for that location hence no reason ever to have removed those windows . I also believe the raised walkway was should never have been approved.  Now that Dan Gilbert owns The Avenue direct access parking to Jack Casino is provided.
