In hundreds of cities, parking spaces become parks

LOS ANGELES — Activists across the nation parked themselves curbside Friday, taking up spaces reserved for cars and transforming them into mini parks with sod, potted plants, lawn chairs and even barbecues to raise awareness about how the auto has won the battle over public space in big cities.

Well, we have plenty of opportunity for this downtown on those oceans of pavement.

i saw a (park)ing day setup near us in manhattan friday. it was in chelsea on 8th ave just below 18th street. they had the astroturf and the lounge chairs out, it was pretty cool. it seemed dangerous in that particular spot with the cars zooming by and rush hour starting, in fact it started to make me nervous looking at it (we were in a cafe by the window), but they took it down quickly as the sun was setting.
