The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force has taken a key step toward construction of a fourth building.

On Wednesday, the Air Force Museum Foundation announced it has awarded a $58,000 contract to Cincinnati-based Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure for an environmental assessment. The work includes a site investigation, regulatory review and evaluation of the project to show potential environmental impacts associated with building and operating the new facility.

It is schedule to be complete in March 2013.

A Dayton-area company has been tapped to build a $1.5 million Space Shuttle exhibit at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

On Friday, museum officials announced Clayton-based Display Dynamics Inc. was awarded a contract to build a crew compartment trainer exhibit. The exhibit — a full-scale reproduction of a shuttle payload bay, tail and engine sections — will be built around the retired NASA Space Shuttle crew compartment trainer recently delivered to the museum.

The bus ride to the annex has been a feature of a visit to the museum since the 80s.  I remember going to it once when I was a kid on a rusty old school bus.

Just might pop over tomorrow or sometime in the next couple of weeks and take some photos. It's been a few years since I've been there.

Nonprofit's 'transformation' of center at Air Force Museum readies final phase

A nonprofit's plan to transform its center at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force — one of the Dayton region's largest attractions — is readying its third and final phase.

Since 2020, the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF), located at 1100 Spaatz St. in Dayton, has been renovating its 17,000-square-foot Heritage Hall and Education Center — resulting in the Hubble Docking Simulator, the interactive SightFlyer exhibit and a new immersive theater. An innovation lab is scheduled to open later this year.

Now, the organization has outlined plans for the third and final phase of the project, an estimated $2.2 million investment. It will "bring the remaining exhibits and galleries to life" — including flight simulators, airplane engine interactives and strategy games — sharing the "stories of America's aviation pioneers to educate and inspire our nearly 400,000 annual visitors," NAHF officials said.

This is the Air Force museum's newest exhibit: Flying the Hump

The world’s largest military aviation museum, located in the Dayton region, created a new exhibit thanks to a donation from a local foundation.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force – featuring more than 350 aerospace vehicles and missiles and thousands of artifacts amid more than 19 acres of indoor exhibit space – recently saw the addition of a new exhibit.

The exhibit was funded through a $209,000 gift to the Air Force Museum Foundation Inc., (AFMF) from the Greene County Community Foundation (GCCF). The gift was made possible by the Louise Kendig Jones and Wilfred D. Jones Family Endowment. The AFMF a nonprofit raising funds and awareness to support the museum.
