Posted September 22, 200915 yr I took these in August 1989. The first photo has One Cleveland Center (silver chisel) and the Erieview tower, etc. The second pic shows the federal building and the Public Auditoruim, among other buildings.
September 22, 200915 yr I took all of these from the T-Tower's observation deck. These three are of Whiskey Island and other areas west of downtown Cleveland.
September 22, 200915 yr Oh WOW, these are great - it's bittersweet to see this shot, specifically one of the now-demolished buildings along the south side of St. Clair Ave. in the Warehouse District: clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
September 22, 200915 yr ^I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me considering the building looks half-collapsed rather than in the process of demolition. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
September 22, 200915 yr Yeah these are awesome. Even though I don't know much about Cleveland, I LOVE photos like these.
September 22, 200915 yr the pictures of the west bank remind me of the opening montage of Major League...pretty cool
September 22, 200915 yr I would love to see some night shots from atop the Terminal Tower or Key Tower. Seeing all the lights, and then the sudden blackness of the lake would be pretty cool, imo. These are great, though!
September 22, 200915 yr Oh WOW, these are great - it's bittersweet to see this shot, specifically one of the now-demolished buildings along the south side of St. Clair Ave. in the Warehouse District: Yes this building caught fire and was no longer habitable. The great thing about it, was that it was a "mirror image" of the building across the street (Worthington Apts, Surroundings Furniture Store) They had the exact same facades, it was really something. IMO, this was the 2nd most-significant building lost, since 1980 (the year when the mindset changed about demolitions, etc). Of course, the Hippodrome would qualify as the most significant structure lost since 1980 (maybe of all time) Some other trivia about that Warehouse District building... there used to be a bar there called Maxwell's (does anybody have any pics of that?) , and for a couple years in a row they had a Haunted House thing in October on the upper floors. I think it was called "Haunted Warehouse". Halloween used to be a much bigger deal in the Warehouse District than it is today. It was probably things like the bar and these "special events" that contributed to the fire, I'm guessing. I don't think precautions and safety concerns were as stringent as they would be in 2009. The WD was not mainstream at all , it was ragtag and unknown to the masses.

It goes to show how tired Downtown was at that time, and how far it has come, even if we haven't filled in those parking lots yet.
September 22, 200915 yr about that Warehouse District building... there used to be a bar there called Maxwell's (does anybody have any pics of that?) Here's when the place was known as Tucker's (circa '82).
September 22, 200915 yr Wow that picture is great. A classic. I have to correct myself, the facades were not exactly the same, but they were very similar. Especially if the first-floor (retail portion) of this building is restored to the way Surroundings Home Store looks now.
September 28, 200915 yr great job folks. wow. and yes i remember going to the haunted warehouse -- i didnt realize it was there, i guess i kind of thought it was more to the north.
October 7, 200915 yr Why did they shut down the observation deck? I was there sometime around 2001 or so and I loved it. I still have the great photos I took. Is there any chance they will reopen it? I wish I could take my friend up there when I will be in Cleveland Oct. 15th, but I know that isn't going to happen. Are there any other observation decks? (I would doubt it).
October 7, 200915 yr I believe the original observation deck used to be higher...and there was an outdoor one as well, I think. If I owned the building, I'd re-open the higher deck and the outdoor one as well...and bring back that cool little soda fountain/snack area with black and white tile flooring that used to be up there in the early life of the building. The attraction and admission would be worth the investment in insurance to me. But, I don't own the place. Sorry! :-(

All the things that have been happen affected the observation areas.
October 7, 200915 yr I believe that the outdoor deck was on floor 43. You can still see the railings in pictures of the revised tower.
October 21, 200915 yr I demand some now and thens! How about some what could have beens? (Weideman's, torn down in the 50's)
October 21, 200915 yr I demand some now and thens! How about some what could have beens? (Weideman's, torn down in the 50's) Can you do that with more old, torn down buildings? It's a pretty neat effect.
October 22, 200915 yr That's cool! How'd you do that?? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 8, 201213 yr Wow, that's crazy considering you took the pics right around the time I was born (Aug.17,1989) :O, think I was meant to find this thread lol.
