Posted September 24, 200915 yr Just out of curiousity, how many of you guys get the flu shot each year, and are you planning on getting the swine flu vaccine this year? Personally, I've never gotten a flu shot, and I don't plan on getting one this year. I don't really have specific reasons, other than the fact that it's not something I've ever done before, and I'm pretty sure I've never had the flu ever.
September 24, 200915 yr I always debate about getting a flu shot. Last year was the first time in a number of consecutive years I did not get one; and a couple of years ago I ended up getting the flu anyway (though late in the season--April--but I don't ever recall having it before) in spite of getting a shot. I know someone who's obsessed with getting a flu shot every year and told me her doctor recommends getting the regular flu shot early this year (like now (!), due an earlier onset, unlike in the past when it peaks in Dec. or Jan.), and then the swine flu shot whenever it becomes available (even though that's predicted to peak as early as next month) http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
September 24, 200915 yr I always get a flu shot. I work in crowded conditions and around vulnerable people. Plus I do most of my air travel in the winter. I rarely get upper respitory/flu illnesses. I am also a pretty fastidious hand washer and sanitizer. That said last night I felt like I was hit by a bus- fatigue, fever, sore throat and so on. Made my first work appt this AM, and then had to pull the plug.

September 24, 200915 yr I think since I am not 18 months or 80 years old, I will pull through. :-) but it's younger people--teens, 20's, etc. who are most suseptible to the swine flu! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

I am 31 but not planning on the flu shot. While I know not everbody has paid sick time I welcome the time off :) I guess I need to read up on the swine flu, I saw something (Discovery Channel?) on the 1918 Flu strain that one of the reasons it was so deadly was a healthy immune reaction basically caused severe pneumonia and people basically were drowning.
September 24, 200915 yr wow. your job must really suck if you rather be sick. I guess I have been there before. Actually for most people swine flu seems to be less serious than regualr flu. The 1918 flu also hit young healthy people, but I think it was a lot worse as far as symtoms

The 1918 flu also hit young healthy people, but I think it was a lot worse as far as symtoms I might be taking a little liberty with that, note the smiley but when I am sick it is the only time that i get to do nothing. Karma is going to bite in the rear for saying that anyway. I will probably get the swine flue and something else at the same time...
September 24, 200915 yr I get a flu shot every year. I also keep Cold-Eeze lozenges around for if I get any "cold" symptoms. They (both) work.
September 24, 200915 yr ^No, if Karma was going to really get you, you'd get swine flu over a long weekend. I always get a flu shot, though I sometimes still get the flu. If they offer the swine flu shot at work, I'll get it too. The flu was bad enough the few times I've had it that I'll gladly deal with a shot to avoid it.
September 24, 200915 yr ^No, if Karma was going to really get you, you'd get swine flu over a long weekend. You are probably right. I don't know if it was the flu or not but I was sick as a dog starting on Christmas eve morning on 2005 (the day of the horrible Browns-Steelers game). That was not fun.
September 25, 200915 yr I get a flu shot every year - already got mine for this season, two weeks ago. I'll get the swine flu vaccine when it's available. I used to get a reaction a couple of days after a flu shot that would make me feel like crap for a day, but it was never as bad as getting the flu. I figure that's why they always gave flu shots on Thursdays at work; anyone who was going to get sick from the shot would get sick on the weekend. I got the Asian Flu in 1957; I woke up on a Sunday morning with pins-and-needles throughout my body, and couldn't get out of bed. I spent most of a week quarantined in the campus infirmary during semester finals, and then had to go around and arrange to take the exams individually over the next couple of days. It took at least a couple of weeks after that episode for my body to start feeling normal, and some folks say I ain't quite right, yet. :|
September 25, 200915 yr I will probably get it, but i haven't rushed out to get one yet. Some years i've gotten one, some not...mostly based on if my employer is giving them away for free and if i'm there that day. Swine flu is something that my wife is more concerned with. I have some issues with my immune system, although nothing severe, so i'll probably ask my doctor about a vaccine for that...or maybe just get it if it's readily available.
September 27, 200915 yr City of Cleveland residents can get free flu shots - here's a link to a schedule (PDF): http://www.clevelandhealth.org/uploadedFiles/Home_Page_Content/Health_Bulletin/Flu%20Guy%20Flyer%20Final%20(English)%20tmm.pdf clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
September 27, 200915 yr I got the flu this week. Too late I guess, though I'm pretty much 95% recovered at this point. I worked from home this week.
September 27, 200915 yr I'm a germaphobe. I get every shot there is. I use hand sanitizer, I have bleach wipe for my keep board and any handhold devices. I never/rarely touch poles, door knobs or handrails and i constantly wash my hands.
September 27, 200915 yr same way. never touch poles or banisters. I am especially leary of transportation- planes, busses what not. When I fly I have those bleach wipes which I use to swab down the entire area-handles to the overhead bin, try table, seat belt buckle-everything. On the little tram or busses, I never touch the pole, rather loop my arm around it if needed to stabilize. After I have handled a restaurant menu, I use hand sanitizer or go wash my hands. I rarely get vital illness. Except now. On the other hand I do some risky things like eat raw meat and shellfish, sample street food the world over, and ride a scooter.
September 27, 200915 yr I haven't been to the doctor for any reason since Clinton's first term. So no, I won't be getting a shot.
September 28, 200915 yr ^My brother used to do that. He never went in for a physical exam. He died of an undiagnosed heart problem a year ago. He was 56. good luck
September 28, 200915 yr I haven't been to the doctor for any reason since Clinton's first term. So no, I won't be getting a shot. That's pretty darn scary, you may want to get checked just in case there is something you never knew about. Every year of my life I've had a physical and been told I've been perfectly healthy and to continue my habits. I once saw a skin specialist and found out I had to have a bunch of moles removed because they could potentially develop into Melanoma. Who would've known? Basically if I stop seeing my skin specialist, I'll die at a very early age, since I have a 100% chance of developing it if I do nothing. Oh, and our company is giving away flu shots this friday so I'm participating.
September 29, 200915 yr I haven't been to the doctor for any reason since Clinton's first term. So no, I won't be getting a shot. wow
September 29, 200915 yr I do have health insurance but I blame this on my dad, who hasn't missed a day of work since 1983. Yes, his dad died of a heart attack, but he never exercized and his diet was centered around buckets of Lee's Famous Recipe. But you've never seen a man so happy in his life, so fully alive, as he was going to work on a 16-piece bucket.
September 29, 200915 yr I haven't been to the doctor for any reason since Clinton's first term. So no, I won't be getting a shot. Given I have a public health background, I want to analyze the not going to the doctor part. Is is b/c: You are somehow proud of this? (don't feel bad my husband likes to brag he has not vomited since 1979) You are afraid of the outcome? or they will tell you to cut out some vice? You are lazy? I am sure you have some lovely people in your life that want you around for as long as possible. You seem like a nice person too, from the board and all. GO GET A PHYSICAL!
September 30, 200915 yr Flu Shot - Yes N1H1 Shot - Probably not Also keep Cold-Eeze lozenges around. Used to have Zicam gel swabs for the nose at work/home until they were linked to losing your sense of smell... "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
September 30, 200915 yr Zicam i can deal with...cold-eeze drops are disgusting. I'll get the flu shot probably pretty soon...my doctor has recommended it (shocking, i know) and i might look into the H1N1 vaccine depending on how it's administered. i've heard that if it's a nasal spray then it's a live virus...and a shot is a dead one...i think my doctor would counsel against a live virus vaccine for me.
September 30, 200915 yr Unless my doctors advise against the H1N1 vaccine, I plan on getting both. I am at a high-risk for complications from the flu because I have asthma. For as long as I can remember, I have received a yearly flu shot. I definitely will not do the nasal spray. It is not recommended for those who are high-risk. Isn't the H1N1 vaccine developed the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine? I certainly do not want to risk getting any type of flu since it would probably take me months to fully recover from it. Doctors and nurses have told me that it is even worse when an asthmatic gets it.
October 9, 200915 yr I think since I am not 18 months or 80 years old, I will pull through. :-) but it's younger people--teens, 20's, etc. who are most suseptible to the swine flu! I don't trust the H1N1 vaccine.
October 9, 200915 yr Hey everyone has a smile on their face when enjoying the colonel's finest Lee's Famous Recipe > KFC! :-) Zicam i can deal with...cold-eeze drops are disgusting... I thought Zicam was being recalled because it sometimes causes loss of smell in some people, sometimes temporary, sometimes permanent. wow. your job must really suck if you rather be sick. I guess I have been there before. Actually for most people swine flu seems to be less serious than regualr flu. The 1918 flu also hit young healthy people, but I think it was a lot worse as far as symtoms I can relate. I had a job once that sucked so bad I actually looked forward to an afternoon off for a root canal. Or maybe it was the pain meds, but anyway... I should be OK so long as I stay away from the swine who claims to be my youngest brother, but I'm getting the H1N1 shot anyway, when it's available.
October 9, 200915 yr I can relate. I had a job once that sucked so bad I actually looked forward to an afternoon off for a root canal. Or maybe it was the pain meds, but anyway... That stuff has me on a whole different program. Pain pills are magically delicious! I usually take half of the prescription and sell the rest of them to Rush Limbaugh.
