New project alert, OSU also filed engineering plans today for an 1,130 space garage at the corner of Cannon Dr & Medical Ctr Drive. Looks like the garage would replace an existing surface lot directly across from the 315N exit.

I was wondering when that would get underway. They've had the planned construction start date listed as 10/20, so it seems they're coming in just under the wire.

27 stories?! Was it always meant to be that high????

It somehow grew by one story since all the articles came out about a month ago stating that it was going to be 26 stories.

Does the "More details" part of what you posted contain any more details? Anything related to height?-I wonder if it changed it it grew a floor?

Nope, just the parcel number.

Really wish the new Convention Center garage would have been wrapped similarly. Love the signage as it faces 315 - "Welcome to Columbus", "Columbus, Ohio" or something would have been nice as folks come into downtown from the airport.

From this week's Master Planning Committee meeting, a first look at the Dodd parking garage:

Nothing particularly exceptional to see here.

It would be significantly better if they used brick(or some other material like metal panels) on the whole thing all the way up coverng the bare concrete.  The white bare concrete skeleton just stands out so much.

It does seem a little odd that they're using metal panelling on the new garage that is almost literally right across the street from this one, but here they're going for bare concrete.

Maybe they plan on this one not being around as long??

Well that could be. What else would the put on this parcel of land? is there some long term plan that shows some other development on this site? It seems they went beyond the usual with the lower parts though so I have my doubts it would be a short term garage.

No idea, I was just speculating. Haven’t seen or heard anything, so it probably will just stay

Its a long term garage. My guess is visibility. There wouldn't be a ton of need to make a big deal out of the facade if it will be surrounded by buildings in the future.

That being said, I think all the medical center garages should install uniform screening with easily discernable labels even with future obstructions. I'm a sucker for continuity.

Edit: What this plan really needs is a people mover to do a continuous loop between all the medical buildings and garages. A real missed opportunity there... in a fantastical world.

It's not train-based, but I just came an apparently new "James Parking Shuttle" route on the OSU TTM page:

I could definitely see them expanding this once all the construction is done.

/\   FWIW, IU Health shut down their monorail and replaced it with a shuttle bus over a year ago. It lasted 16 years. Indianapolis is just the next North Haverbrook.

I'm really curious about this timeline and construction. That parking deck and helipad have to be demolished. It is still open until 12/21 and thats going to take time to tear down and haul off.

Are they going to be laying groundwork and foundation on one half while still demolishing the deck? Or does the tower indeed fit in that adjacent hole in the ground and the overlays are a little off?

^^Considering the length of the building I would suspect there will be two tower cranes.

I believe there were three applications filed for cranes.

The new parking garage is to be [partially] open this month. I believe as soon as that happens the Old Cannon garages will both be demolished. I am curious as to the status of the helipad... There is seemingly no replacement for that?

^There's another helipad on the old hospital building - it was constructed when the Ross Heart Hospital was built.

image.png.684751459425f94c7add4b6be7b5f3ff.png

The helipad may have already been decommissioned. Looking at the construction camera, it looks like the "H" marking the helipad has been crossed out:

This is pretty standard practice to mark an aircraft landing site as inoperative (see the decommissioned runways at KOSU).

The FAA still has it listed as operational (as of December 3), though, so this might not be the case.

I dont think that helipad has been in use for awhile. The main pad on the existing medical center is the only one I've recalled seeing being used. I cant tell if there will be a new one on the north part of the tower. It almost seems like the infrastructure would be there.

Edit: as a level one trauma center and a major hospital, I would also expect a helipad to be able to accommodate multiple helicopters. When Summa updated Akron City a number of years ago, they built their about twice the size of OSUs to accommodate two if needed.  As an additional element to that (including Summa), some hospitals helipad are specifically designed to accommodate Marine One.... which goes hand in hand with being able to handle multiple helicopters.

I might spy something here?

Looks like the crane will probably be built tomorrow.

Going up....

5zX8p9k.png

They are topping off the crane right now. It's odd, given the planned height of this tower, that this crane doesn't seem to have the component that will allow it to grow. Is that something that can be added later? I wouldn't think so...

fEvieuh.png

Speaking of the tower crane, I was surprised that we were seeing one go up so soon.  When should we realistically expect this tower to reach full height?  Will it really take 5 years?  Or will we see it top out much before that with a bunch of other work going on inside after that before the 2026 opening?

Could this tower crane be for demoing the garage?

^that was my thinking as well

Yup, this is the first of 3 cranes so I would suspect it is combination garage demo and just for the podium construction -- the other two will likely be for the full height of the tower.

Looks like we will see 3 Luffing Jib cranes. The first is now in use. These reinforce the fact that we will have a tall building In a relatively small footprint - such a space saver.

Here’s a construction update from OSU.

https://buildingthefuture.osu.edu/news/2021/01/22/progress-continues-new-inpatient-hospital

Here’s what the article has to say about the tower cranes: “The first tower crane has been assembled to its initial height and it will continue to grow as the hospital progresses. A second tower crane is scheduled to be installed late February near 10th Avenue and Cannon Drive.”

This is a random question not necessarily construction or "urbanohio" related, but is Dodd hall itself still in operation or standing?  I'm only asking because I had a cousin who had a pretty traumatic and rare accident back in 2000 and spent about 4 weeks in Dodd hall after a lengthy 11 month stay in 3 different hospitals before being release to go home.  I visited her in Dodd and it was crazy dated an felt like a scene out of the Godfather even in 2000.  Regardless the care and professionals at her care were amazing.  Again, just curious.......

^Yes, still standing and in operation.

It is the most expensive building going up in the state... So it makes sense that this one is well-documented haha
