And which one of you wants to update the "Announced, approved and current proposals" section. Cleveland has buildings as short as 11 and 12 stories on their list, so I think we could add a good number of buildings. The 15-story Edwards tower on High, the 15-story tower on Broad in Franklinton, Gravity 2, Arlington Gateway, the Scioto Peninsula 11-story apartment tower, the 13-story Edwards tower on Broad (that is currently just a hole in the ground), and the 12-story Children's Hospital tower all come to mind as potential additions. I can't think of anyone more qualified than the person who was able to list off a dozen or so 10+ story approved buildings and developments!

October 8, 20213 yr As if the three tower cranes on the site weren't enough, a large crawler crane is now being used as well.

Just counting the floor levels up on the core/shafts and how much is left just shows how huge this building will look and how dominant it will be. And I LOVE IT!!!! I love it sooo much! lol. It's like what I imagine crack is like to a crackhead when I see stuff like these pics! *looks at pics and inhales deeply* Keep the pics and updates coming folks! We need our construction crack/porn!

November 1, 20213 yr Does anyone know what this is? I can't find it on any of the renderings that were released. Looks almost like a chimney and it seems to be tied into the structure.

November 1, 20213 yr The outer elevator towers are quite tall, taller than one tower crane and about the same height as the other two. They appear to up to 14 stories already, so we are starting to get a sense of how tall this tower will be. Given that the tower will end up being 26 stories tall, the elevator cores are just a little over halfway to their final height.

This thing is going to be a beast.
November 16, 20213 yr The billboards around town say the new tower is scheduled for completion in 2026. I'm very curious as to why this is taking 5 years to complete. The new Hilton project, although less complex than a hospital, is similar in size and is only going to take roughly 2 years to complete. What gives?

The WMC is about 2 million square feet. That difference alone is enough to cause a massively different construction timeline. Additionally, building a hospital is much more intricate than building a hotel. It's not just the construction of the skeleton but also outfitting the building. The Hilton has about 450 guest rooms which are very standard to build out. The WMC has 820 private patient rooms, which are all essentially specialized hotel rooms with a crazy amount of complicated medical equipment that has to be carefully installed. So you have twice the number of rooms in the WMC and each room is probably twice as difficult to build out. Then, you have all the operating rooms, offices, lobbies, examination rooms, etc. that a hotel tower does not have.

The new Hilton project, although less complex than a hospital, is similar in size and is only going to take roughly 2 years to complete. What gives? Needing to install multiple millions of dollars of medical equipment is probably the reason. It'll probably look like a fully formed building for up to 2 years before actually opening. Also have you seen the size of those elevator cores? That's the scale of construction for this entire project compared to the elevators at the Hilton which only need to fit like 10 people. Just so much more planning, way more unique materials and likely need specialized contractors to construct certain areas of a state of the art hospital. This thing is going to be loaded with top of the line technology as well and a lot of it will likely take a long time to order in and then also need to be installed by the manufacturer and all that. Not to mention this time table may also be including months of technology troubleshooting to make sure everything installed is properly functioning.
November 16, 20213 yr ^Everything mentioned above, plus the pure logistics of transporting a hospital full of patients, some of them critically ill, and the staffing required to operate, will take time to plan out as well.
December 8, 20213 yr From Walsh’s page on LinkedIn, interesting that this is their first project (to my knowledge) in Columbus and one of a very few into the state of Ohio. They’re a big player and my guess will only get bigger in our market which is a good thing.

December 8, 20213 yr Here's a construction update from the project's webpage: https://buildingthefuture.osu.edu/news/2021/12/07/slideshow-inpatient-hospital It has the same aerial pics that were already posted here, but they seem to be a bit higher res. I love this shot with downtown in the background. You can see Hilton Tower, the elevator core at Thurber Village, the peninsula buildings, and Gravity 2.0.

Based on the FAA apps, which list the site's elevation to be about 725' above sea level, this would mean the elevator cores have reached about 275'. They still have about 125'-130' before they reach their final height.

Also, you'll still be able to see the current tower as you travel up and down 315 until you are due west from the complex.

January 24, 20223 yr Inpatient Hospital Becomes Tallest Building at Ohio State https://buildingthefuture.osu.edu/news/2022/01/21/inpatient-hospital-becomes-tallest-building-ohio-state The inpatient hospital project reached a major milestone in January. Concrete was recently poured on level 22 of the north and south elevator cores of facility, making it the tallest building on all of the Ohio State campuses. The north and south elevator towers will eventually reach level 25 which will be used for mechanical and support spaces. Level 24 will be the final patient care floor. The center, or middle, elevator core, will contain a total of eight staff elevators and a total of twelve public elevators. This core will eventually top out at level 27, and it will serve as a new helipad. The inpatient hospital is the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State. Once completed, it will be the 10th tallest building in Columbus, Ohio.

February 8, 20223 yr The way this tower is being built seems so odd. For such a tall tower, you generally don't see the elevator cores advancing 15-18 floors higher than the steel/concrete for each floor. Hilton Tower's elevator core, for example, was usually one floor higher than the floor actually being built out. Even more odd is the fact that the elevator cores are as tall, or taller, than all three tower cranes on site. I wonder when we'll see the first tower crane jump...
February 9, 20223 yr I was thinking the same thing, I was even wondering how tall you could build unsupported elevator cores.
