And if there is little opposition that will be going against Smitherman, then there stands to be a good chance it will be put up for vote.

Ethics complaint filed against Mallory

By Jane Prendergast, Cincinnati Enquirer, October 19, 2009

The treasurer of the conservative, anti-tax group COAST has filed an ethics complaint against Cincinnati's mayor over the mayor's failure to report free Macy's Music Festival tickets and other freebies to the Ohio Ethics Commission.

Mark Miller compared the mayor's failure to report the $7,800 in unreported tickets as well as travel to the golf outings and other gifts taken and not reported by former Gov. Bob Taft. Taft was indicted in 2005, convicted and fined $4,000.

Interesting tidbit...

Passed by the Mayor and City Manager exiting Great American Ball Park about 12:30 this afternoon. Not sure what event was going on.

Also exiting but, walking the opposite way, were two men and a woman who got into a car together (they were not necessarily attending the same event as the Mayor; could have been visiting the HOF for all I know). This was their conversation:

Man 1: "You know he is HIV Positive."

Woman: "Who? The Mayor?"

Man 1: "Yea. And don't ask me how I know this."

Group: "Hahahaha"

I wouldn't classify this as appropriate or pertinent to the quality of the forum.  Pretty lame post dude

I apologize if my post offends you but this is a thread about Mark Mallory and I think it's pertinent that some of our (possible) residents go about their everyday with conversations like this.

Not offensive to me, but as a health care provider I am under oath to keep a person's medical history private by federal law.  I think the same should apply to everyone.  Especially when spreading a "rumor" as serious as that

A lot of people are jumping to conclusions and running their mouths on this rumor...

Mallory on Undercover Boss?

No one will confirm. But here’s what we do know:

City Council chambers on the third floor of City Hall are being prepared for some kind of television production, which at least two council members – Chris Bortz and Leslie Ghiz – believe is the television show Undercover Boss. Jason Barron, the mayor’s communications director, cautioned against jumping to conclusions and said he could only say that a video production is being done.

The council members think it’s Undercover Boss because their aides were asked by production workers to sign forms promising they would not disclose things they saw and have been told by city employees going in and out of the chambers that the filming is for the popular Sunday night television show. Both council members told their aides not to sign.

why would Ghiz and Bortz be so crappy about a stupid show?  Mallory is term limited so, why bother going after him?  It just seems petty.

The Mayor will be on Willie's show at 1:07. This is a rare appearance...

I'm sure Ghiz will be on during the 12 o'clock hour to spew her standard hate of all things the Mayor does. I still don't understand why people are up in arms over this. I'm sure the city will be compensated.

I don't get it either. That show is surprisingly good. Kinda sappy, but it will show the Mayor as human. Something critics seem to doubt.

They are petty--

I'm wondering if they are going to sue the Police about Police Women of Cincinnati-- There was a lot of talking and filming of the ladies on duty while they were in their uniforms that they wouldn't have done if they were on film.  Clearly money was "wasted".

At least "Undercover Boss" has the potential to shine a positive light on the city.  "Police Women of Cincinnati" has zero potential in that regard.

Mayors have been on reality tv shows a number of times.  Just watch Project Runway!!!

dude shouldn't take himself so seriously...and in most cities there is no Mayor/Manager/Council triangle that allows everyone to blame someone else.  People complain about Mallory a lot around here, but i don't see what it is he's supposed to be doing.  There is a professional City Manager who is supposed to run the city...and there's a Council that sets down the rules for running the city.  What's the Mayor supposed to do?  run the council meetings and break ties.  That sounds like the Vice President's job.

I like Paul, but I think it's funny he presents such a stiff view here of what Mallory should be able to do as the "face of a business". Paul is such a firebrand, it seems like he rarely cares what the face of his own business looks like; he's certainly never one to avoid controversy.

"As a businessman, my image is everything and I'd like to think the city I chose to do business with feels the same way." That's not the Paul I know, which is exactly why I have a hard time taking this rant seriously.

The CEO of Chiquita went on the program, and that company doesn't seem to have lost much face as a result. Maybe reality shows are classless, but they are mainstream in the world we inhabit. Businessmen understand the value of a publicity stunt, which is exactly what this is, viewed in the most cynical light. "No such thing as bad publicity" and all that... And that's assuming consensus among the business class is that the show is trashy, which I wouldn't bet is the case. There is also the potential to appeal to common folks, which Paul doesn't even consider.

I think there are two forces driving Paul's rant: 1) his already established distaste for Mallory, and 2) his tendency to like things as they used to be, rather than how they are currently. In the past, the conventions were different regarding what was an appropriate image for a leader to project. They are different now, but like with other things, Paul thinks the old way was better. He's very small-c conservative, in that sense.

Mayor filmed 'Undercover Boss'? How did Mallory keep that secret?

BY JANE PRENDERGAST • [email protected] • JANUARY 14, 2011

As the surprise continued to sink in Friday that Cincinnati Mayor Mallory sneaked around the city to be an "Undercover Boss," this question was the first off many lips: How?

That was his first thought, too, when officials of the CBS show first contacted him six months ago, he said Friday. He has both a very distinctive look and deep voice. He's the guy in the suit always, the one wearing the little glasses, who threw the famously bad pitch on Opening Day and then made fun of himself on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" about it, the one who prides himself on traveling around the world to tout Cincinnati.

Anyone catch the Mayor on Jimmy Kimmel last night?

Mallory touts Cincinnati, meets Justin Bieber on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory made a surprise appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” early Friday, in which he bantered with the late-night host and then met teen pop star Justin Bieber.

Promotions earlier in the evening for Kimmel’s show, which airs on Channel 9 at midnight, had stated that Bieber would be among the night’s guests. After Kimmel made his entrance, welcoming “the 40 million 9-year-old girls who are up after midnight for the first time in their lives tonight,” he claimed Bieber had not been able to come but that he had found a suitable replacement: “I think you’re going to be very happy. We’ve got the mayor of Cincinnati — Mark Mallory is here.” (Here’s a video clip of the segment.)

After Mallory came on stage, waving to the crowd, Kimmel asked him what was going on in Cincinnati.

^ wow...

I felt like I was listening to Ross Perot pointing at charts as he was throwing out all those dollar amounts for things. A bit tacky, maybe, but it can't hurt.

I wonder how he ended up on there, LOL. Anyone know why he was in LA?

He travels a lot-- the way our city government is designed, the city manager and city council do all the work- the mayor is really a figurehead/cheerleader.  His role is primarily to represent the city, glorify the city, and bring people to the city.  I have a cousin who is the Executive Producer of JKL- but I had nothing to do with it! haha

I agree that he should have said- we have lots of high rises going up, instead of a $400 million building.  90% of people won't know if that's a lot or a little- and I don't know why he said the price of the streetcar either.

BUT i love that he passed out a reds cap-- that cap looked great- too bad it was too big for both guys. haha

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory defends travels on taxpayers' tab

They are some of the most exotic and distant destinations on Earth. China, Israel, Ukraine and Japan just to name a few. And they are all places that Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory has traveled to since being elected.

But in these difficult financial times for the city, how does he justify continuing to often take these trips on the taxpayers' tab? And just how many places has he visited?

9 News Anchor Lance Barry is on your side with the answers.

Mayor Mallory’s Undercover Boss Airs March 6

TV and Media Blog | 8:19 am, Feb 24, 2011 | Written by jkiesewetter

Would you recognize him? Here’s the first photo of Mayor Mark Mallory in disguise for  “Undercover Boss.” The episode will air Sunday, March 6 (9 p.m., Channels 12, 7).

The Mallory episode — taped in early January — is the first elected official, the first government official and the first African-American man to star in the CBS reality show.

^ Loving that photo! LOL

Oh no! The mayor spent $30,000 dollars to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars, how dare he!

In all seriousness though, do any of you think that having a city manager government benefits us in this case? While the city manager is here running the city, it can allow the mayor to travel to promote the city and spur more interest in the what the city has to offer. If it allows us to get more conventions, funding, and recruit businesses here I can hardly see the detrimental effect.

I just hope the next mayor isn't Chris Smitherman with an anti-streetcar majority on Council.

The juxtaposition of Mayor Mallory with J. Bieber borders on the bizarre. Seems like Mallory is trying to become a bona fide "celebrity" politician in the tradition of Jerry Springer who also once took his turn in the Mayor's seat. He's also appearing in Undercover Boss (March 6 on CBS) maybe as part of a conscious effort to raise his name recognition nationally. Maybe its all part of his personal aspirations for a national political office run in the future? At least Mallory is helping to raise the profile and national awareness of Cincinnati at a time when the city seems to be making progress. (despite the national recession) We are living now in an era of "celebrity" politicians; witness Obama, Palin, et al...

Mallory did 'Boss' 'for the people'

Word had leaked out that Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory would wear a fat suit on Undercover Boss, but it was something quite different to see the fastidious, thin, always-impeccably-dressed man put on the baggy fabric on national TV.

The show went over big at Cadillac Ranch downtown, at a watching party to which Mallory invited friends and supporters. People booed when Mallory went out to write parking tickets, and howled when he reacted to a worker’s eight kids by what sounded like, "Damn, bro."

It was hard to imagine Mallory, who is rarely seen in public without a suit on, as someone with a belly, fake facial hair and a wig of dreadlocks. But he pulled it off – to the extent that just one of the workers he spent time with seemed to recognize him.

It seems that Mayor Mallory did a credible job as undercover boss. He was also quite adept at side-stepping the delicate issue of compensating the other participants by referring to "friends" as benefactors. All in all, I think he portrayed Cincinnati's city employees in a positive light and did not try to sensationalize or trivialize anyone's role. It might have been better to have chosen sunny days for filming because one is left with the impression that Cincinnati is perpetually cold and gloomy. It was interesting that Mallory's Dayton St. family home location was referred to as "Millionaire's Row" rather than as Historic Dayton St. or the West End. It would have been nicer if some more PR for the city itself had been worked into the episode (to offset the presence of dead animals littering the streets) but overall it was tactful and credible. Just my outsider impressions...

Mallory to work for Pa.-based engineering firm

Former Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory is joining a Pennsylvania-based engineering company.

“He has shown himself to be an extraordinary leader throughout his career and has a proven track record with establishing solid relationships,” Robert Agbede, Chester Group’s president and CEO, said in a press release announcing the hire. “He has the knowledge and vision to help grow our company.”

The Pittsburgh-area company, Chester Group, is one of the world’s largest engineering services firms, according to the release, assisting public and industrial clients in meeting energy, water and sewer needs.
