Posted October 11, 200915 yr I went to the Upper Peninsula for almost a week. We spent 2 days in Marquette and 1 in Hancock and Calumet each. We even went all the way up to Copper Harbor in the Keewenaw Peninsula. The towns I post pictures of are going to look pretty dead, keep in mind that these were taken in October and it was pretty cold out. In the summer I'm sure Marquette is a pretty busy place. *Population- 19,661 (2000 Census) *Marquette is the seat of Marquette County *Largest city in the Upper Peninsula *Home to Northern Michigan University *Major port on Lake Superior *Averages 141 inches of snow a year
October 11, 200915 yr Good pictures of Marquette. I spent 6 winters there for work and one of the coolest things they do is a dogsled race. They close the main street in town and bring in about 4 ft. of snow. Everyone comes out to watch the dogs and it is a great atmosphere! All kinds of dogs, beagles, Golden Retrievers, etc. Great place to Sled (Snowmobile) and the skiing isn't bad either. The Superior dome at NMU is also amazing. It is a domed stadium (well, small stadium) and it is entirely made of wood with the exception of the joints. Great town. I spend quite a bit of time in Houghton as well now in the winters. The history of the UP is amazing. The country's first mineral rush was to the UP...Copper and Iron. Architecture is unique with the red stone they have up there too! Calumet is another amazing town old mining town. The downtown is very, very big for the size of the city. It was a boomtown when it was profitable to mine copper there. Thanks for the pics!
October 12, 200915 yr Nice-looking town, with some interesting buildings. Very tidy and well-maintained.
