Posted October 13, 200915 yr It was a sunny cool afternoon Saturday 10.10.09... Midtown has a variety of architecture-- most of the commercial structures are from the early to mid 1900s. And the residential structures are from the mid to late 1800s. Almost all of the original residences are now used for commercial purposes. Prospect between E. 30th and E. 55th has huge potential. The relatively narrow street and intact building stock make for a very cozy feel.

That's one of my favorite stretches in all of Cleveland. I especially love the ivy covered townhomes. Anyone know the story behind them? Were there more on that stretch at one time? And nice photo thread, Clueless!
October 13, 200915 yr Thanks a lot everyone. I had fun doing it. About the rowhouses... I believe there were probably a few more. The #27 pic (with a stand of rowhouses w/ window air conditioners--- and not in very good shape) is the only other surviving example of this on Prospect. I'm not sure what those are used for, but they would be great restored (as much as possible) for residences or retail/commercial. I think Upper Prospect could really be an up-and-coming area...but it's several years away. The fact that it borders CSU is a plus though...makes for a lot of potential

October 17, 200915 yr Is Cleveland city proper holding its own, declining or possibly getting better? This city sure has the bones and is obviously better off than Detroit and Buffalo, but can this city turn around and become vibrant in many more of its neighborhoods? What about the crime? How is the mayor and what is getting done in the city overall? It definately has the potential IMO to become great, though it will take a long time, but I can see some hope for the future. I hope you Clevelander's can answer some of these questions and don't feel afraid to type a good bit. LOL I would just like to hear opinions and what is going on from someone who lives in the area. Try not to be biased. I know it's hard. The downtown was very nice. I was there for the Metallica Concert Thursday and I was impressed. My friends were too. They had never been there. I have not been to Cleveland for several years myself. I have just been too busy visiting other cities and I don't have much money anymore which sucks. Time to save up.

When I was growing up and we wanted to describe a "loose female classmate" we would joke that she probably went to work after school on Prospect. It was a crime-ridden area with lots of drugs, brothels, gambling dens, after-hours spots etc. etc. Another joke was to go down Prospect and count how many candles were in the windows -- a sign that a prostitute was in business there -- like a cabbie's light atop their car. When my father (a realtor) would tour out of towners around the city, he drove them down Prospect, Hough and St. Clair as among the worst areas to avoid. And I remember seeing lots of candles in the windows on one of those streets -- I don't remember which one but the odds were pretty good it was Prospect! So what you see there today is nothing like what it was in the 1960s and 70s. October 22, 200915 yr Great pictures!! Its great to see a threat on this hidden gem of Cleveland. I have been wanting to take pictures of these neighborhood for years. I feel that this is the best neighborhood architecturally for Cleveland. I just wish that more of it had survived

October 22, 200915 yr I remember 25 or so years ago driving down Prospect on a weekend night around places like the Sterling or Grand Hotels and seeing crowds of ladies hooting and hollering at passing cars (sometimes standing in the middle of the street!). *sigh*

But I know a few bar-backs and after-hours joints around town where this stuff still goes on. Hint--check out some of the sleazier strip clubs and look for large bars with long and undistinguished histories. But the Internet is a big reason why there aren't more red light districts like Prospect Avenue anymore, aside from the targeted clean-up efforts, neighborhood revitalizations and the targeting of organized crime. October 23, 200915 yr Given the fact that Prospect prostitution has been eradicated, and a momentum has been started to encourage more student housing for CSU, it seems to me that Prospect would be an idea college row, with a mix of businesses, support retail, in-fill housing on both sides of the inner belt.

I think Payne is a better street for that, since it would connect the artsy/farty folks, with the Avenue District folks with the CSU folks. If it were up to me, I would build great 8-10 story historical housing from 14 street up to 30. Then larger 10/15 story buildings up to 40.

It's a great area for condo conversion.
