October 14, 200915 yr Great tour. I've never been to Calumet, but the Woody Guthrie song came into my head as soon as I looked at the thread.
October 14, 200915 yr Thanks! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 14, 200915 yr Nice shots! Did you get the street north of downtown with all the cool rowhouses?
October 15, 200915 yr Not a bad bump on the road, although the Family Dollar in the center of town killed it a little bit. Great thread.
October 16, 200915 yr Michigan House is probably my favorite restaurant in the Houghton/Hancock/Calumet area. I have heard that Calumet was actually in the running for Michigan State capitol at one time. Thanks for the pics!
October 16, 200915 yr Oh, one more thing. I think the town immediately across 41, now known as Laurium used to be called Calumet. Back when Calumet was Red Jacket. Then Calumet changed their name to "Laurium" and Red Jacket changed their name to "Calumet". They are basically the same town and you can't tell when you move from one town to another.
October 16, 200915 yr ^ You are correct on that. Man... The Michigan House, haven't been there in a while.
July 7, 201014 yr Work is well underway on the Union Building, check out the article below for pictures and a video of the interior demolition. It is to be used as an interpretive exhibit and welcome center. http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/news/story.aspx?id=479228
July 9, 201014 yr Calumet is fortunate to absolutely be dumped on with federal money since alot of it is actually a national park. Certainly a treasure worth investing in. I still want to buy a home in this area and just spend a month there. It's incredibly beautiful.
