October 17, 200915 yr How much are the cable cars used by the city population for regular transportation? Also, the Y-intersections in the financial district with all the trolleybus overhead wires look like Seattle.
October 17, 200915 yr How much are the cable cars used by the city population for regular transportation? Also, the Y-intersections in the financial district with all the trolleybus overhead wires look like Seattle. The cable cars are seldom used by locals... locals mainly stick to the Muni busses and light right, as well as BART for commuting. I was extremely impressed by the bus system in SF... busses came by every 5 to 10 minutes, stations all over the place, very clean, etc...
October 18, 200915 yr Excellent city tour! It's been too many years since I've been there. It's good to hear that the transit system has shaped up; on a visit in the late eighties, I observed that it had gotten very shabby; dirty, overcrowded Muni trains on underserved routes, and buses that seemed to run "whenever" without much regard for the published schedules. The coastal air is positively invigorating!
October 18, 200915 yr Great tour and extremely comprehensive. Even the dreaded Sunset! Our transit system is not bad, but could be better. The cable cars are definately for tourists....too slow and crowded for locals, plus, we would not be caught dead at the Wharf!!! The regular Muni Metro cars are still crowded, but run quite often and are fine, except on special occasions. They never make allowances for special events, which are always a freaking mess...like Halloween etc. Ugh. The City has been trying to clean itself up, with varying degrees of success. There are lots of empty store fronts, even downtown and on the main shopping streets. The Mission is still a mess. South of Market is hit and miss. But, progress is being made. All in all, not a bad place to live...just expensive. Wonderful photos all!!
October 20, 200915 yr The cable cars are definately for tourists....too slow and crowded for locals, plus, we would not be caught dead at the Wharf!!! My wife takes the California line to and from work every day. From what I understand, it's mostly other commuters during that time. Powell/Hyde is a different story. Union Square is my fave. Other than that SF is zzzzzzzz Interesting. I kinda feel the opposite. Anyway, great shots sam!
October 20, 200915 yr Hi all, The Stinking Rose is my favorite place to eat. If you are a fan of garlic, that's the place to go. MMMMMMMMMM garlic ice cream. Partners and I will be having dinner there next Wednesday. Looks like we will be roaming around the Castro on Halloween night, scares me. :-D Warm nuzzles and bear hugz to all. Jim S.
October 20, 200915 yr we would not be caught dead at the Wharf!!! You wouldn't even go to the Wharf for a Boudin clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl?! Delish!
October 21, 200915 yr Looks like we will be roaming around the Castro on Halloween night, scares me. Certainly not the party it used to be, but it should still be a good time. Enjoy!
October 21, 200915 yr Don't even want to begin about Halloween in the Castro...not at all fun for the residents. Try cleaning up after a few hundred thousand obnoxious drunks every year. Ughhhhhhh.
October 22, 200915 yr I had photobucket pull that same stunt on me the other week. The bandwidth wasn't actually exceeded, they just pulled the plug.
October 24, 200915 yr Union Square is my fave. Other than that SF is zzzzzzzz Interesting. I kinda feel the opposite. Anyway, great shots sam! Union Square is nice and its the only place to do some real shopping in San Fran. Other than that I personally don't need to be in or see any other part of the city. Its the West Coast Boston!
October 24, 200915 yr At least we aren't the West Coast Newark! You are right about shopping..completely concentrated in Union Square..but it sure makes it handy..like an old fashioned downtown! There is only one "real" shopping center in the City outside of downtown: Stonestown....and it is not much. Of course the suburbs are like anywhere..sprawlzilla and then some. Acres of parking, etc. Sometimes necessary to dust off the passport, get a foreign visa and ventrure into the burbs for a day of shopping, as SF has a phobia about big box stores. Once in a while you really do need to go to one...like a Lowe's or a Home Depot. Not allowed in the City. Go figure.
