Making history Birdtown area is anticipating its designation

The city will have to play a wait-and-see game, but Planning and Development Director Thomas Jordan is expecting that Birdtown will end up on the National Register of Historic Landmarks by next year.

The planning department spent more than six months complying data to submit to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office for a chance to be on the register. They recently submitted the final application, and Jordan said things are looking good.

We are pretty confident they will recognize the Birdtown designation, Jordan said.

Where exactly is bridtown? I know its on the eastern end, but no idea of the general boundries

Birdtown boundaries:

North: Madison Ave

West: Madison park

East: 117th

South: Redline

I don't know if these are the official boundaries, but I know the area well because my mother grew up in this area.  It was largely settled by Slovak Catholics who worked in the area's factories.  There are a bunch of churches.  There are two catholic churches across the street from one another: one for the slovaks and one for the poles.  St. Cyril and Methodius still has monthly slovak masses.  My grandpa had a second law office on Madison where he would serve all the slovak-speaking clients during the evenings.  The 11-story Fedor Manor is named for him.  My grandma hates the name 'Birdtown'.  I could go on...

Its not that the homes are that great.  The street grid is what makes this area interesting.  The area has a Tremont feel to it (minus the chic reputation).  I am interested to see what the new elementary school will look like once its completed.  I hope that it fits in with the historic character.

when do we get a tour?

when do we get a tour?

Ask Blinker.  He knows a lot about tours ;)

I should get over there and take some pictures.

I can turn my head to the right from looking at this computer, and see Fedor Manor about a mile south from my fifth-floor window.

I'd be happy to take some pics, but I'd rather wait until after Thanksgiving (especially since it may take that long before we see the sun again!).

I wonder if this means I won't be able to put a much needed addition onto the back of my house????

It's unlikely that they will take it that far.  Usually it does mean you'll need to undergo a design review to get a building permit.  They may ask for some changes to try and make it consistent with the neighborhood's character, but it is usually open to negotation.

This neighborhood is pretty small...looks like just a few blocks...but eight churches?  Wow.

We really need a photo spread of this neighborhood. But I never think about doing this when I have the camera with me. This is a great time of the year to do it, as the leaves are just starting to change, but the weather's still warm enough to photograph more people out walking around.

thanks X. I have two "bedrooms" downstairs that are way too small.  No closets. You can barely fit a twin bed in there. I am guessing that people loved claustrophobia in 1916 when the place was built. The logical choice would be to extend those rooms out into the back yard. Even 8 ft. would be a tremendous diffence.
