Echoing rider....beautiful. Looks so idyllic.  When I see pictures like these, I really miss Columbus!

Lovely day, beautiful shots.

Looks like you're becoming comfortable in your new digs.

Great as usual. I take it you're a fan of the library.

Generally, yes.

I am--which means a lot as the building in not even a Carnegie.

Looks like a great campus

Beautiful.  Looks like that was a peaceful walk around campus.

Excellent photos!  Even as  Wolverine, I think OSU has a beautiful campus.  Killer aerial there of the oval.

OSU Medical Center is planning a new 17-story tower on the site of Means Hall. Means was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in 1951 in International Style. It appears that demolition will occur soon as the site is being fenced off.

Oh, and forgot the joke:

By any MEANS necessary, DESTROY IT!!!

I like SOM and the restoration of buildings.  But there's a big problem with restoring these types of post WWII buildings versus earlier building types.  Once you replace all the inefficient exterior glazing and inefficient internal systems, you've pretty much rebuilt the entire building.  Only without the historic charm of the earlier building types.  So these types of post war buildings don't engender much restoration interest unless they are of some unique historic or design interest.

Also, I can think of three other SOM buildings in downtown Columbus.  The 12-story Huntington Plaza office building at the southeast corner of Broad & Front, the 37-story Huntington Tower across from the Statehouse on High Street and the 24-story National City Tower at the southwest corner of Fourth & Broad.

SOM is a huge corporate firm, so their buildings are pretty much a dime a dozen.

How many good SOM structures are out there is an entirely different question. IMO, the firm hasn't done anything particularly noteworthy since the 1960's.

I think I would have liked it when it was brand new, but man did it age poorly.

the campus really does have some nice parts that look great in the fall when trees are turning. this was the best time of the year for a photo thread on it!

Indeed...and this one is from 1951.

I'm not saying I plan to stand in front of the bulldozer, but I do think it is important to acknowledge its loss.

This was constructed contemporaneously with SOM's Lever House in NYC -- and Means is actually a rather good example of their post WW2 work. Its another example of both the problem with advancing recent past preservation, as well as OSU's rather poor recent preservation track record (Lord and Brown Hall demolitions without outside structural engineering evaluation).

FYI - another SOM campus building in Ohio is the former Corry Hall on the campus of the soon-to-be-reopened Antioch College in Yellow Springs - a campus which also includes an Eero Saarinen design.

great set.  makes me miss it soooo much.  and makes me realize it has even changed a lot since I graduated in 2007.

OSU has one the best campuses and academic programs in the country. It offers so much.

Miami University's Art Museum is also an SOM:

I miss spending Indian Summer days on the Oval.  BTW, good riddance Means Hall!
