Posted October 25, 200915 yr So I am moving to the Tremont area in a month. The area I am going to be living at is right down the street from the West Side market, it's off W25th, turning left onto 25th it's a few streets down on the left. When I visited it looked like an ok area. Dead end street, mostly residential. It didn't look like the slums. But now everyone is telling me what a bad area that is so now I am worried. I don't plan on walking around at night or anything but is it horrible crime? Any help is appreciated:)

I don't plan on walking around at night or anything but is it horrible crime? Any help is appreciated:) Welcome to Cleveland. You've come to the right place as there are several Tremont residents on the board. As with any city, you need to keep your wit about you. You've already signed a lease, inhind sight you should have asked us for information when researching the area. ;) ;D ;) Tremont is safe. Tremont is more residential than its neighbor Ohio City. When these so called people made these statement, did they have any information to back it up? Stats? Everyday knowledge of the area? Did anyone who made a statement, live in Tremont? You don't indicate where you're are currently located, but prior to moving I would spend some time in the area at night, weekends and other various times of the day to get a feel for the neighborhood. Where do you currently live? Male of female (I assume female by your screen name)? Who exactly are these people who told you it would be unsafe? I'm not trying to grill you, but I'm direct and too the point. This way you'll have a counter answer to their "statements". Just don't invite them over, since they claim the area is "bad"! Not that they would come anyway! ;) Tremonters....help alesha out!
October 25, 200915 yr 25th hardly runs through the Tremont most of us are familiar with and spend most of the time. It kind of skims the western edge of the neighborhood...and I believe that is actually Barber/Vega according to the block club that meets near where I am thinking this description to be.
October 25, 200915 yr Well a few people that are warning me about the are only visited and my brother who is the most adament lived in Tremont for a few years. He lived around where the coffee shop Civilization is. Right now I live in Vermilion with parents:( I am starting school in Jan. I know I should have done some research but I didn't expect to find a place that had everything I wanted within my price range so quickly ( I have 3 boxers so finding a landlord that is ok with that was proving to be a problem:) When I was there the few times, I saw a few older couples in the area, houses decorated for Halloween, it didn't look scary to me. The landord said he has never had an issue. Anyway thanks SO much for the help so far!!! I really appreciate it
October 25, 200915 yr Welcome to the forum - it's hard to tell from your description whether you'll be in the Duck Island area (sort of a buffer zone between Tremont and Ohio City), the Clark-Metro area, or Ohio City proper. Either way, as MTS said - you'll want to have your wits about you, just as with any urban area. Most violent crimes occur between people who know each other (i.e. gang/drug related) so the saying "don't go looking for trouble" applies. The City of Cleveland participates in providing information to http://www.crimereports.com/ - you can plug in your address or zip code and get an idea of crimes (type, frequency, etc.). clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 25, 200915 yr Wow, I don't know what area it is. I know that I get off W25th from I90E and I turn left and it's like maybe a half mile down the road on the left. Thanks so much for the website. I will check that out right now.
October 26, 200915 yr If it's south of the tracks (Barber, Queen, Fillmore, etc), that area is worse than north of the tracks (Monroe or Chatham). Either way, I wouldn't call that area Tremont. That's the southern part of Ohio City. I believe both are part of the Ohio City Near West Development Corp.'s planning area (CDC's oversee neighborhood development, safety programs and some basic social programs in Cleveland). That being said, the area that you've described is not an area I would have recommended, especially the southern part. While it is true that most crimes occur between people who know each other, that doesn't mean I should be feel better by only being a witness to crime than being victimized by it. And the area you've described is a high-crime area. I used to be a newspaper reporter and covered the crime beat for that area. That section of West 25th south of the tracks is known for prostitution and drug activity. But I don't know which sidestreet would be yours or who your neighbors are. It could be an oasis of safety. If you could provide us with more information, we can give you more information. October 26, 200915 yr I agree, that does not sound like Tremont, and IMO it's not a very good/safe area. There's truth in the old saying that you get what you pay for and if you found a place so easily, you should have been suspect, but you're new to this, obviously. The 3 boxers will definitely be a help but things like keeping your car safe may be more of a problem, and I would have one of the dogs with me when out for walks. Given your description of the street, it very well may be residential and relatively quiet on that street, but the surrounding neighborhood may not be that desirable. I would do what I could to get to know your neighbors so they can give you some information on what to expect. Go and introduce yourself, let them know about the dogs and that you'll try to keep their noise to a minimum or what have you, etc. I assume you signed a one year lease?
October 26, 200915 yr The place is off of Barber. I have a baby coming in June so my concern is finding a safe place to live. I haven't signed a lease as of yet.
October 26, 200915 yr I just put that area into the crime database - in the last couple of weeks you've got 2 stolen cars, a breaking & entering (robbing your home), 2 thefts, 2 assaults, 4 "theft from vehicle" (smash and grab). I would look somewhere else, like in the actual Tremont area - lots of people have dogs there so I bet you would be able to find a landlord who is dog-friendly.
October 26, 200915 yr Thank you SO much. I am so glad I put this question up on here. Everyone has been so helpful. Thanks again, I will keep looking .
October 26, 200915 yr Can we help you find something? What are you looking for? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

At least one of those crimes you reported, R&R, happened on W. 14th St. If you look at the map over the last 30 days, there have been two vehicle thefts in the area west of W. 25th St. and that's it. Most of those crimes you posted were closer to Tremont than the neighborhood in question. I don't know enough to say whether it's a bad neighborhood or not, but it doesn't seem to have much more crime than the heart of Tremont.
October 26, 200915 yr That neighborhood certainly has problems, but they have a very active block club. The Barber-Vega group is one of the few that I have run into who have a "what can we do" attitude rather than "what can everyone else do for us" attitude. As a result, they often get more help than other clubs because they are so easy to work with. All very nice people, and I think only four or five of them are actual prostitutes. Just joking. I don't think that area is very scary, just low-income, which some people can find intimidating.
October 26, 200915 yr thanks jam40jeff, I just typed up what was listed, I didn't look at it with that much detail.
October 26, 200915 yr Well I think I am going to look at something maybe in Lakewood. There is a dog park there (with 3 boxers that is important) and it seems safe for the most part. I know a lot of homes are split with one apartment on the 2nd floor and one on the first. I think I am going to look for something like that, with a fenced in back yard. I am also looking into Tremont as well. I am not moving until Dec so I have a little bit of time. With a baby coming in June I just want to feel safe in my place.
October 26, 200915 yr ^There's also a dog park in the industrial valley adjacent to Tremont. I go there pretty often and it's very nice.
October 27, 200915 yr The dog park is at the west end of the city in the Rocky River valley. Some people walk their dogs down there, but it's a long walk -- especially when returning home uphill. There is no housing in the valley which is part of the huge Cleveland Metroparks. Other people with dogs live in the Edgewater area of Cleveland of Lake Avenue. It's right next to Edgewater Park -- but hold on to your dogs. My former co-worker's dog got free from his collar and ran.... right into rush-hour traffic on the Shoreway. Amazingly the dog survived. There are 16 city parks in Lakewood -- Lakewood Park, Madison Park and Kauffman Park are the three largest. For a complete list to aid your search of what you might want to live near, see: http://onelakewood.com/PublicWorks/Parks_PublicProperty/ I've lived in Lakewood for 13 years and might be able to help you in finding a decent place to live. My suggestion: when you check out apartments/housing, ask your potential neighbors about the area. Your enjoyment of your new home will greatly depend on how loud/obnoxious your neighbors are. This is very important in Lakewood, considering the closeness of the homes. Quiet neighbors make a neighborhood; noisy ones can wreck them. October 27, 200915 yr Ok. I am going out of town for the rest of the week but dive back into my apartment hunt next monday. I am not ruling out tremont by any means but am leaning more towards lakewood. I will def talk to the neighbors of the area and see whats around.

As in what are your housing requirements & personal needs. I know being dog friendly is one. There are wonderful dog friendly areas throughout the city proper.
October 27, 200915 yr Well I need something with a fenced in back yard, a place that won't screw me on pet rent. Someplace somewhat big, if it's an apartment at least 1100 sq ft or a small house would work too. And of course i have a budget, with my boyfriend and I living off our GI Bill housing allowances of 1100 each per month (we are going to be full time students) and my 1300 a month with unemployment AND with a baby on the way money is a concern. I am leaning more towards an apartment, a lot of apartments in Lakewood seem to be large homes converted into apartments. And at least with that some of the utilities might be paid and I won't have to provide my own appliances. I don't think my needs are impossible, just a little harder to find the right place.
October 27, 200915 yr Everyone charges pet rent now, I haven't been able to find a place that doesn't. Good luck on that one. Maybe you can cut some kind of deal at least, maybe just pay for 1 dog unless/until there is a problem or something? I think a half-double might work well for you if you can find the right one, with a pet-friendly owner who has a fenced in yard.

What school will you be attending?
November 4, 200915 yr Well I am back into the apartment hunt and I have found 2 places that I like. Both are in Cleveland and both are within 15minutes of my school. I am going to be attending the national institute of massotherapy in independance. One is off W 58th and Franklin Blvd the other is off Daisy Ave and W25th (off of I-71). The one off W25th, the landlord encouranged me to talk to my neighbors and get a feel for the area. She said she owns about a half dozen properties ion the are a and she has never had any issues. The other one looks safe as well but I don't know. Anyone know these areas at all? Any help is appreciated:)

November 4, 200915 yr Is the W58th st apartment north or south of Franklin? Either way, that area is fine.
November 4, 200915 yr I had a co-worker who lived on Daisy Avenue. It was an OK street for him until a neighbor's pit bulls killed his beagle and maimed his other dog. Then the neighbor fled so he couldn't be prosecuted. But until that happened, he had no complaints about the neighborhood, and he's lived there for more than a decade. He still lives there with his two surviving dogs. I pet-sat for him about 10 years ago when one of his dogs got out of a fenced-in area one night, so I got a real good tour of the neighborhood while looking for the dog! I soon found him and discovered the neighborhood is very quiet at night. At the Fulton end of the street is the Second District police headquarters, which is a plus. There is also a little mid-block store in a house at West 35th and Daisy where he often picked up beer, milk or bread, and I once bought cigarettes there when I still smoked. It's a typical little neighborhood bodega. I really like the area around West 58th and Franklin. There are some scattered rough spots, especially farther south of Franklin, but no vast crime-ridden areas. There has been a lot of investments in new and rebuilt housing along this stretch of Franklin. And if you go to the north near Detroit Ave that area is getting MUCH better. You're not far from the Gordon Square area at Detroit and 65th with all its theaters, restaurants, cafes and funky shops. I'd still be wary in both areas at night, but your dogs should keep you company nicely. :) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 4, 200915 yr The W. 25th/Daisy place is part of the "Clark-Fulton" neighborhood, running roughly from I-90 to I-71 and from W. 25th to W. 50th or so. It's generally (and with good reason) considered pretty rough in terms of crime, poverty, and abandonment, though it varies street by street. I remember Daisy, and that southern edge of the neighborhood in general being a bit better than most of the area to the north of it from when I used to manage properties around there, but I'm not sure how the last decade has treated it. I would say to proceed with caution.
November 4, 200915 yr yes the property on W 58th is between franklin and bridge. There doesn't seem to be too much within walking distance around the daisy ave place, but I know it's within 5minutes drive of tremont and west side market. The place on daisy ave is right by metro health and I have heard there were some shootings there but I don't know for sure. Anyway I appreciate everyone's input, it really helps to get information from people that know these areas first hand.
