The Little Red Lighthouse (officially known as the Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse) is a small lighthouse located on the Hudson River in New York City. It was made famous by the 1942 children's book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde Swift and Lynd Ward.

The lighthouse was erected in 1880 as the North Hook Beacon at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, where it stood until 1917. It was reconstructed in 1921 in its current location by the United States Bureau of Lighthouses as part of a project to improve Hudson River navigational aids, and was in operation until 1947. The GWB opened in 1931 (the lower deck aka ‘martha’ opened in 1962).

The proposed dismantling of the lighthouse in 1951 resulted in a public outcry, largely from fans of Swift's book, leading it’s preservation.

It’s a bit of an adventure to get there and back, but a pleasant one, worth the effort - enjoy!

*** the little red lighthouse & the great gray bridge -- a scenic sidebar in washington hts ***

Hey, that's my neighborhood! I live about ten blocks north of the bridge, and I was just up on 181st Street earlier this evening to buy some booze. Great pics.

since i'm watching tv and it looks like the yankees have bought and paid for yet another world series tonight as i put this thread together...i could use some booze now - ugh!!!

I've tried my hardest to like the Yankees since moving here, but they make it almost impossible. (I'm completely indifferent toward the Mets.) Since the Reds aren't playing in the World Series this year, I guess I'll have to throw my weight behind the Phillies, but I won't be losing any sleep over the outcome of this one. At least the Bearcats and Bengals are doing some interesting things.

I always dug that lighthouse.
