Posted November 1, 200915 yr 12/21/12. The day that the ancient Mayan Calendar says will be the end of civilization. This thread is for all things related to that. Is it to be taken seriously ? Or just another Y2K letdown ? If enough people take it seriously...survival bunkers, money hording, constantly watching the news, becoming more solitary and spiritual...will it have the ability to slow down the economy ?...and the things that come from a sluggish economy, such as development projects scrapped or put on hold and marked decreases in certain areas: number of homes bought and sold, cars too. Will there be sharp increases in the sales of bottled water, canned food, survival gear, etc. ? Or will it be the opposite? Will there be "live-it-up-now" spending going on ? You know, "Party like it's 1999, er, 2012". Buy Everything, have fun...spend all your savings...travel and see those places that you always wanted to go to. This could be a boon to the economy. But it would also have exhausted a lot of resources if we were all here the next day...the 22nd of December. If anything, this is going to affect Christmas sales, one way or the other...they'll be way up or way down, in 2012. Will everyone hold off shopping until the 22nd? And it's not just how we Americans will approach this. What about people in other parts of the world ? Other cultures may take this much more seriously. I know it's hard to gauge right now what the actual feeling will be in December 2012. And especially how it will affect the economy, since we're already in (but maybe coming out of) a global economic recession. Life may just be "business as usual" in December 2012. And all of this concern for 12/21/12 might burn itself out by that day. I'm sure there will be 2012-fatigue. No better time than now to start sharing those thoughts...
November 1, 200915 yr I'm only in my 20s and I can remember like 4-5 other instances when the world was supposed to end. I don't think people will take it very seriously - myself included.
November 1, 200915 yr 2012 isn't the end of the world, Mayans insist By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer MEXICO CITY – Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it's not the end of the world. And the rest: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091011/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_mexico_apocalypse2012
November 1, 200915 yr The Mayan Calendar says nothing about the end of the world, just as the world doesn't end at midnight on Dec. 31st on our calender. It rolls over to the next year. The difference is that the Mayan calendar recognizes a much longer division of time, which is about to roll over. As for Y2K, it wasn't a hoax or superstition, it was a very real technological issue with the way that old computers were set up. It was because large amounts of money and manpower were diverted to updating our critical computer systems (which incidentally drove much of the tech boom of the late 90's) that it wasn't a social and economic disaster.
November 1, 200915 yr As for the topic starter, the only economic impact of 2012 will be an uptick in Roland Emmerich's real estate holdings and a severe downturn in John Cusack's credibility.
November 1, 200915 yr That was great KOOW! If anything, it could be an economic boost. People are buying into this crap like crazy, and money is definitely being moved around. I really think it's just a ploy for some marketing and financial gain. The whole concept is such bs.
November 1, 200915 yr i dk man. i saw the trailer. it looked bad. we're in for it. '2012' Trailer HD a-cgi-pocalypse!
November 1, 200915 yr ^On the movie site they feature a 10-minute clip. Emmerich is the John Coltrane of sustained global destruction.
November 2, 200915 yr I think enlightenment will bypass the US. My dumb@ss brother in law tried to convince me that the 2012 movie is based on real scientific evidence and mayan prophecies or whatever. People like him will believe whatever they see on TV and are too lazy to research stuff online. The fact that people assume Hollywood movies are factual is much more scary to me than Armageddon.
November 2, 200915 yr Speaking of Y2K, my brother got a college transcript that says he graduated in 1903. This is the worst Y2k glitch that I am personally aware of.
November 2, 200915 yr otoh, i know the trailer disappointed people, but i am still really looking forward to avatar in imax 3D!

Yeah, I remember the old Compaq from 1995 I was still running in 2000 was doing stuff like that. File dates all changed to 8's too. Though I don't believe in a 2012 doomsday scenario, I can't help but think we have some really difficult and interesting times ahead of us.
