Posted November 5, 200915 yr It's been 5 years of UrbanOhio, starting in November 2004! I can't believe this little site that Rich and I started became an actual WEBSITE with discussion, photos, outrageous forumers (Locutus anyone?), and (hopefully) real-life positive outcomes and help. So I just wanted to say, on behalf of myself, MayDay, Rich, all the other mods & admins, and Civvik (who ALSO helped out with CincinnatiUprise)...thank you all for being a part of this "little" website!   Five years! That's like a 1/4th Chris Brown! So I guess this thread can also be used to share memories of the past years on UrbanOhio. What forumers do you miss? What threads were memorable? Has UrbanOhio changed your life? Oh, and trust me. This site ain't goin' anywhere! I can't wait for the 25th Anniversary...when MayDay turns 85. November 5, 200915 yr I guess I'll start. One of my favorite memories on UrbanOhio was meeting a forumer by the name Cincinnatius (not the current one...he's an ass; the older gentleman from Eaton). He was a wealth of knowledge and was the original forum historian. He would tell you about the details of the Cleveland Arcade, the original plan of Union Terminal, to the former chicken shack on Germantown Ave in Dayton. The man knew it all. I believe he lived in Piatt Park/Garfield Place area in Cincinnati though he disappeared around late 2005. A shame since he will be missed. November 5, 200915 yr So I'll go on the subject of how UO has changed my life... First and foremost to state the obvious, this site and its members keep me excited about Cleveland even when things aren't looking as promising as hoped (or when they are)! Secondly, I would never have known the name of of anything about the Downtown Tech Center in my backyard, nor would I have built up a relationship with Councilman Cimperman to tackle neighborhood issues. Finally, I would never have known about St. Malachi without the suggestion of a forumer, and that church is something I've been looking for since high school..... And there may be more things, but those are the first things that come to mind!

November 5, 200915 yr Um, my date registered sez: July 30, 2004, 10:45:48 PM unless that's a carryover from cincinnatiuprise, or whatever that earlier site was.
November 5, 200915 yr I 'love' our apocalyptic discussions - Peak Oil and the Housing Bust/Recession? boards - so much heat.
November 5, 200915 yr Well, I'm sure we started in like early 2004 but the stats say November (and I don't have a good memory when exactly we started) so GO WITH IT!!! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
November 5, 200915 yr I remember my first showdown with MayDay. It was in a photo thread by mrnyc. It was like Gay Pride day on UrbanOhio. He he he he. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3460.0/msg,34565.html Ever since then you Queens have been coming out of the UrbanOhio Closet like gangbusters. Having said that, this leads me to one of my favorite threads. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,18908.0.html I still want to know what REALLY went on?! LMAO!
November 5, 200915 yr I have learned a lot about urban planning here, which I really appreciate. The bartender in me loves starting a conversation to find out what people's passions are, and then learn from them. The engineer in me loves asking "is there a better way" Those have usually lead to great and informative discussions over the years. I miss the Pope and Ewoops
November 5, 200915 yr I like the time MayDay suspended MTS, so he pretended he went to the Olympics! yeah, how come we never saw any pictures of that Olympic trip? Since I live vicariously through the travel experiences of other people I was really looking forward to them! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
November 5, 200915 yr Everyone reaches the point in their lives when they learn that their hero is not who they thought he was... Case in point, learning that someone whose conservative view you've respected, voted for McGovern!

November 5, 200915 yr I first found this site when I was searching for information on condos in Downtown Cincinnati during the summer of 2005. It is great to hear so much information about urban projects and planning in general. Whenever bfwissel and I walk past the site for Queen City Square, we make sure to notice the curtainwall. That is something we never would have thought about without Urban Ohio. :)
November 5, 200915 yr It has been a joke between XUMELANIE and I to work the word "curtainwall" into the conversation as much as possible when we get a glimpse of Queen City Square. "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett

November 5, 200915 yr This was the first place where I didn't feel so outnumbered by the people who are so negative on downtown. Today there are lots of positive blogs but five years ago it wasn't like that at all. This was the first place I felt comfortable enough to make a post and not just be a lurker. Thanks.

November 5, 200915 yr Ah, happy 5th birthday, UrbanOhio. UO has really changed my life. It has sustained and grown my interests not only in Ohio and Cincinnati, but also in urban planning, urban design, architecture, and social issues. Hell, I even mentioned UO in my college essays as one of the contributing reasons why I want to pursue planning as a career. As far as some notable moments of my UO 'career': -One of the first threads I posted in was about homelessness in Cleveland. I was 15 and thought I knew everything, and got in a nasty little argument with MayDay. I learned quickly that I indeed did not know everything, and even if I thought I did, to shut the fuck up every once in a while. -I remember a photo thread of downtown Cincinnati at night after a large snow fall a ways back. I have been trying to locate the thread for a while now, but haven't been able to find it. It was one of my favorite photo threads to date. -Remember when CincyImages actually posted here? Furthermore remember when CincyImages was Montecarloss? -Locutus of Board sure made things interesting for a while -The intermittent battles that occur between Cleveland and Cincinnati members -I remember posting about Queen City Square and how it would be awesome if some day it became a reality, but it seems like little more than a pipe dream. Now it's about 400 feet tall. Being able to follow a project from idea, to rendering, to construction and eventually completion has been awesome. -Riverviewer, Grasscat, the Pope, Chad the Fun Dude. RIP in the UO cemetary
November 5, 200915 yr Happy birthday, UO. Be sure to have a fifth to celebrate your 5th! :drunk: I'm relatively new here, but it's been great making friends and establishing some connections with people in my hometown of Cincinnati, despite currently living many miles away. It's nice to find a group that is positive about the city's future, instead of the usual dirge of perpetual naysayers. Seeing photos and news from those other two Ohio cities is mildly interesting to me as well. :) The highlight so far: The Cincinnati Streetcar thread, watching the rise and fall of Issue 9, and meeting many of the key players during my two most recent visits back home. I like to think that thread served as sort of a central dispatch for the various anti-Issue 9 forces. Here's a toast to many more victories.
November 5, 200915 yr This thread would not be complete without thanking Dylan Leblanc and Skyscraperpage.com, where a lot of us met and found our first active urban discussion board. Kudos to you guys who have worked so hard to keep this site up.
November 5, 200915 yr Definately kudos and thanks to SkyscraperPage and Dylan, agreed. But most of these folks don't know him ;). "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

November 5, 200915 yr Happy birthday UO! I would just like to extend a thanks to all of the mods and Admins that work hard to keep these forums civil and mostly on topic places. And thanks to Mapboy (aka Mr. Good day) for telling me about the site. I love knowing everything that is going on around the state. Apparently I have only been a member since March of '07, I wonder what i used to do at work all day?
November 5, 200915 yr I've been lurking here on and off as far back as the early spring/late winter of '05. I had a dreadfully boring college job, but I had internet access. To pass the time I'd read forums among other things. For a while I was reading the Cleveland.com forums including the "Lakefront Development" thread where MayDay and KJP would end up linking to here periodically. Urban Ohio keeps me in the loop. When I visit my friends and family in Columbus, Toledo, Cincinnati and even Kentucky I always have something extra to talk about. Also, been able to keep things fresh when going out with friends, because I can always think of something to do when the "where should we go (next)?" question comes up.
November 5, 200915 yr Happy birthday UO! If it wasn't for this site I wouldn't know half as much about Cleveland as I do now and probably wouldn't have visited in November 2007, which is when I fell in love with the city.
November 5, 200915 yr Happy Birthday UO. This site definitely impacted my life. Centralized my focus in photography, urban issues, and city planning. It opened my eyes to the awesomeness of Ohio. The amount of information I get from this site is amazing. The forumers are also amazing. The constant banter between MTS and MayDay is priceless. Rob's photo threads and discussions are very informative. ColDayMan is just Legendary ;-). Randy and Sherman's coverage of Cincy/OTR is always so interesting and informative. I can go on and on about everyone one who contributes, but it would seriously take up two pages. Forumers I miss? The Pope - funny as hell, Montycarloss/Cincyimages, and Grasscat. I have told this story before, but how I found the site was through an image search. Right after I moved to the Williamsport area, I did a google image search and I found some photos from Evergrey's Wilpo photo thread from '05. I don't think it's here anymore but I enjoyed it. I still have yet to do a full thread. :-) I enjoy this site so much and I am just so glad I found it. Thank you guys for making it happen.

November 5, 200915 yr How did I know you would respond to that?? :-D You know, this site you be very different without you.
November 5, 200915 yr I wonder what happened to David's roommate? Anyone think he took us up on our suggestions? Has anyone ever seen the roommate again? Hmmmmm?
November 5, 200915 yr I also "pre-date" Urban Ohio, having joined this site on Aug. 7, 2004 -- just two days after my 37th birthday. I miss Riverviewer, Grasscat and the royal asshat, the Pope. OK, actually, I miss the Pope's sister. Hotter than hell, that one. The most memorable threads were some of the snowstorm threads. Watching storm pictures pop up from around the state as the storm raged outside was pretty damn cool. So was Tuesday night in watching the Cincinnati Issue 9 coverage and commentary. It was like being at a virtual campaign party, which was helpful because I'm 250 miles away in Cleveland yet had a horse in that race. And, why yes, UO has affected my life. I do get frustrated sometimes with some forumers, but I always learn something from all of you, especially when I don't agree with you. But I can't think of a dumb one in the bunch, even though our passions sometimes make us say/write things that aren't so smart. And, I must say, reading about projects and seeing renderings, various construction progress pictures and people's ideas always lift my spirits. You can't find those anywhere else, really. So no wonder why the citizens of Ohio cities are often so negative. If everyone in Ohio could visit UrbanOhio (and be responsible posters), I think we'd have a much more positive, optimistic and forward-looking populace! Perhaps that should be our goal for the next five years? Spread the word!! November 5, 200915 yr I come here for the b!tches. And I love this site because there are so many different ways that can be interpreted ;)

November 6, 200915 yr This site made me care about what happens to our cities, care a lot more than I ever thought possible. I now find urban planning issues fascinating. It's great to be around people who have the same interests. Where else are you going to find people like us? lol. Urban Planning/related stuff was always at the tip of my tongue before I joined here but I didn't know what I was actually fascinated with at the time. I remember when I first joined, I thought everyone here was a narcissistic, snot nosed know-it-all but after arguing with a bunch of people I actually learned a lot and realized this is a positive place. As it transpires, I consider you guys to be some of my best friends now. Honestly, I think we all have strong identities because of this site and the people we've met through it. We get exposed to all the issues and figure out what we stand for and care about.
