Never realized that the B&O Terminal was right in the mix of the typical street grid. Cool photo.

Sure. Hopefully it doesn't take another 30 years.

A friend of mine covered the bombing for WERE-AM. The bomb site, just outside Christy's bar (site of today's Quarter brand-new apartment complex) was dotted with bits of Shondor's flesh, including some hanging from trees along Detroit Avenue.

My dad worked at Realty One with a woman who was Shondor's wife at the time of Shondor's death. She was well aware of how he made his living, as did most of Cleveland. He was a famous gangster around Northeast Ohio whose reputation extended back to his bootlegging days during Prohibition.

The story I heard is she was so sheltered from the business end she had no clue it was Danny Greene that killed him, and gave him his dog because she knew he loved them.

Perhaps at the time. My father didn't know her until the mid-1980s. She was also quite a bit younger than Shondor, by something like 30 or 40 years.

Oh she knew what he did.  They got married soon after she provided his alibi from a murder.

No one in this town ever frustrated zealous prosecutors more than Shondor.  Nationally, maybe only Joey and Nick Bosa's great grandpa did so more.

Earlier, very public, attempts were made on his life. The former Thunderbird Lounge - now the event center for Ripepi Funeral Home in Parma - was the victim of an explosion on his behest.

Historic? Not sure about that, but it definitely brings back memories. BTW, note that most of the restaurants were in inner-ring suburbs because many of the next rings of suburbs weren't populous enough yet....

I LOVEDDDDD the Ground Round on Pearl in Parma Heights

^ That sundae in a baseball hat....classic.

That was my first cooking job back in high school (Parma Heights location). It was also where I first met the former singer of Death of Samantha and Cobra Verde and current PD writer, John Petkovic. In fact, I was there just shy of a month when he convinced the GM to let DoS play a gig there. He was let go shortly after that infamous gig. The place was trashed.

Closest Ground Round to CLE, that would be Johnson City, NY. A mere 277 miles away.

Those are still a thing, sort of:

Loved the Ground Round on Lakeshore Blvrd in Willowick as a kid, pay-what-you-weight Monday’s. Also, a weird thing, whenever I’m in a place that plays the tv with no sound but has music on I think of GR since they used to do that with their tv’s.

Most people seem to think Elvis Presley's first northern show was at Brooklyn High School.

It was actually at the Circle Theater.  In fact he played there twice before BHS.

I'm hopeful I'll live long enough for VR to make that possible.

Wow. That's an awesome view. I've never seen that one before.

It would be fascinating, but also I think a touch depressing.  The smoke and industrial smells would have been choking, the river horribly polluted with visible oil slicks, and any patch of ground not paved would be churned to mud.

I get it, but I think just to see the labor on the docks, the taverns on the water, the gas-lit cobblestone streets, the industry. I'd be fascinated.

Came across this today.... Wow were things different then  ??? Every single building is gone.  IT says taken from St. Clair but I think this is actually Superior?
