I dunno--the Cavs parade was pretty epic.  If the Browns ever win a Superbowl..you can double that attendance.

Yep. I was at an overcrowded Cleveland State Line bus stop in Lakewood and ended up sharing an Uber with two guys, one from Houston and another from Washington DC, both of whom came in the night before because they figured the party would be pretty epic for Cleveland's first championship in 52 years. They were right.

Do a YouTube search for Jasper Wood’s, incredible streetcar scenes throughout the City circa 1951. You may tear up at the activity, density and transportation.

Saw it. Loved it. And hated it.

How does one demo a landmark?

How does one demo a landmark?

It has to have its landmark status removed. I've covered several of these and they are, sadly, relatively uncomplicated. Then it goes through the usual demolition approval process.

Only one "de-landmarking" was anything bordering on controversial -- the former Broadway Mills/Gilotta Oil Products building at the east end of the old Central Viaduct. It was unlandmarked in 2005 or 2006 to make way for the new Inner Belt bridges.

EDIT: my error/memory malfunction. This wasn't a landmarked building. Some members of the community tried to landmark it to save it from demolition but to no avail....

I love the Little Italy nod.  It has to be a reference to the Feast of the Assumption...which occurs in mid-August.

^Beautiful, great photo!

Can anyone enhance the image to see the banner affixed to the building on the right?

Great photo YABO713[/member] but there's lots of pre-1894 photos of Public Square including the SE quadrant.

Edit-never mind, I see that you mean it's the first known photo of Public Square....period.

Not too many surface lots in the warehouse district

Not too many surface lots anywhere, though they were starting to appear in the Roaring Third/Big Italy/Gateway District back then. That, Kingsbury Run, the Bloody Corner (East 110th/Woodland), the Olde Angle and Duck Island/Walworth Run were some of the roughest parts of town back then.

That photo of NIKE missile base was actually from 1959, IIRC and it was taken just east of Burke Lakefront Airport and/or Gordon Park. There were NIKE missile sites at both locations -- two of eight such bases that encircled the city. Cleveland was one of the most heavily defended cities in the nation because of its massive industrial base of critical military-related industries (oil refining, airplane parts, tanks, and the NACA/NASA facility, etc) as well as being a northern city that would be among the first attacked by Soviet bombers coming over the Arctic Circle. The missiles and the command centers were often not right next to each other. Some of the buildings for this base at Burke/Bratenahl still stand. There are some very interesting posts about the missile defense system that existed prior to the advent of ICBMs (especially those on Soviet subs just off the coasts) that made them irrelevant.....

The Defense Department still owns land east of Gordon Park.  Here it is on Google Maps:

Are the structures in the parking lot the former missile sites?

The remains this cathedral were demolished and replaced by the current Saint Malachi church.

Where exactly did Champlain Avenue exist in Cleveland?

It was obliterated by the Cleveland Union Terminal complex, now Tower City Center. It ran west from Ontario and parallel to Superior, traveling gently downhill to Canal.

it looks to be still around. it was the best one for quite a long time:

^That was a pilgrimage for my friends and I growing up. Having first conquered Bloodview, and then 7 Floors of Hell, we had to face the Hudson Haunted House - the Granddaddy of them all

My first trip to Hudson Haunted House was 1978. The line to get in back then was an hour long. Got to listen to hit music while waiting....MacArthur Park, Hot Child in the City, Just What I Needed, Whenever I Call You Friend, etc. mixed in with the screams and loud, scary sounds coming from within the building. And once you got inside, the comfort music was gone...

I'm sure you all know where this is.

But if you don't, this is where the 9 is currently standing.
