First Precinct - Headquarters of the Cleveland Police located on Champlain Street (current site of the Terminal Tower) circa 1893, just before it was torn down.  The building on the left is the new Police Headquarters that remained on Champlain Street until 1926 when construction on the Terminal Tower began.  You can visit clevelandpolicemuseum.org for more history on this building.

Interesting--I've never seen this photo of Public Hall before.   It looks like Music Hall is under construction.   I always thought they were built at the same time.

That's an amazing view. I've never seen that before either. Thanks!

quite a viewpoint --- look at all those working docks. and i see the massive old union depot back there.

Edited by mrnyc

I've never seen this view before. This was taken about 1920 looking west across both of the Superior bridges. The 1918-built Detroit-Superior bridge is on the left. The 1877 Superior Viaduct is on the right.

It's a shame the entire Viaduct couldn't be saved.

River was too narrow for bigger ships. Several arches were taken out for the river widening.

Speaking of narrow, look at how narrow East 3rd was on the south side of Euclid, Nov. 15, 1927. Wish the bank building on the left could've been saved.

16' is perfect. I wish we had lot more public row that width.

When was the jackknife bridge relocated from the east bank of the Cuyahoga (as pictured) to the west bank?    Was it ever functional on the west bank?

It's was as narrow as most alleyways, yet it had buildings along its short stretch that faced it, like the original Hermit Club before it relocated to Dodge Ct. near Playhouse Square.

Fantastic! First time I think I’ve seen such a clear image of the erstwhile Champlain Avenue.

My hovercraft is full of eels

Amazing shot. And no parking lots anywhere!

These amazing aerial views of are from about 1921. You can see public auditorium under construction, which started in 1920 and finished in 1922. This is shortly before major demolition began of the southwest corner of Public Square for the Cleveland Union Terminal complex whose most recognizable building was/is Terminal Tower. But the first building in that complex was completed in 1918 -- the Hotel Cleveland, now the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel.

the 1921 aerial is just amazing to see -- incredible timing with pre-muni stadium and pre-terminal tower.

the soot hadn't gotten to the new cle hotel as yet, its glowing white lol.

most of all -- its an entirely intact downtown -- and only a part of it at that.

Something I've wanted to do for a long time and finally gotten around to:  Scanning old construction pics I took downtown in the 80's and early 90's.  Society, Tower City, Bank One, Sohio and North Point while under construction are all included.  I don't know if they're considered historic.  Is this the best place to put them, or is there another topic better suited to it?  There's 77 total I've uploaded to a Flickr album, so probably too many to put here.  Maybe share just the best highlights?

Yep, went to that game for my 26th birthday.  I vaguely recall noting that downtown was lit up much more than normal.

"West Point Story" came out in 1950, which IIRC was a particularly harsh winter.

Looks just a little different now.

Going to look a LOT different in the (hopefully) near future. Interesting tidbit - the Renaissance (Hotel Cleveland) is rendered incorrectly; the lightwells/setbacks are on the Superior side, not Public Square.

We lost some gems in the Cuyahoga and Williamson buildings but we're getting some new ones (Beacon, Lumen).

Sooo glad we ended up with the Terminal Tower.

While we all wait for the next construction crane to show up downtown, here's some visual highlights of the golden decade ('82-'92) of tall building construction in Cleveland. Was there any another 10 year period that saw the skyline change so much: Medical Mutual, Ohio Bell, Eaton, Sohio, North Point, Tower City, Society + Marriott, Bank One? I used to go downtown on Saturdays during this period to witness and record some of the big changes underway with a vague sense that someday in the future it might be interesting to look back at. I wasn't there to capture all of them, but I did get most of the big ones.

There's something so cool about port photos in general. Nature meets industry. Love it.

These are fantastic!  Thanks for sharing.

I think there was some talk of closing a portion of Euclid Ave to traffic back in the 70s, but it never happened.

The building is still there, though.

OK then how's this... North view of near-east side of #Cleveland from top of YMCA at E22 & Prospect Ave. circa 1918. Trinity Cathedral in left foreground. Howe Mansion (south side of Euclid) right. 4 other Euclid Ave mansions on the north side: L-R, Myers, Osborn, Johnson & Winslow (west facade seen)

Crazy thing about watching that video is that both scenes are probably more picturesque today than back then due to the expansive tree growth over the past 100 years.
