When was the jackknife bridge relocated from the east bank of the Cuyahoga (as pictured) to the west bank? Was it ever functional on the west bank?
July 25, 20204 yr Quote Speaking of narrow, look at how narrow East 3rd was on the south side of Euclid, Nov. 15, 1927. Wish the bank building on the left could've been saved. It's was as narrow as most alleyways, yet it had buildings along its short stretch that faced it, like the original Hermit Club before it relocated to Dodge Ct. near Playhouse Square. July 28, 20204 yr These amazing aerial views of are from about 1921. You can see public auditorium under construction, which started in 1920 and finished in 1922. This is shortly before major demolition began of the southwest corner of Public Square for the Cleveland Union Terminal complex whose most recognizable building was/is Terminal Tower. But the first building in that complex was completed in 1918 -- the Hotel Cleveland, now the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. August 6, 20204 yr Something I've wanted to do for a long time and finally gotten around to: Scanning old construction pics I took downtown in the 80's and early 90's. Society, Tower City, Bank One, Sohio and North Point while under construction are all included. I don't know if they're considered historic. Is this the best place to put them, or is there another topic better suited to it? There's 77 total I've uploaded to a Flickr album, so probably too many to put here. Maybe share just the best highlights?

August 15, 20204 yr Was tidying up and found some postcard/postcard books of Cleveland I picked up on a trip to Santa Barbara, CA last October. Detroit-Superior Bridge and viaduct View of the Cuyahoga River from the now-demolished viaduct: Looks just a little different now. Going to look a LOT different in the (hopefully) near future. Interesting tidbit - the Renaissance (Hotel Cleveland) is rendered incorrectly; the lightwells/setbacks are on the Superior side, not Public Square. We lost some gems in the Cuyahoga and Williamson buildings but we're getting some new ones (Beacon, Lumen). Sooo glad we ended up with the Terminal Tower. The next set is from the 50s-ish? The Lumen now stands in place of the low rise buildings on the left. Hanna fountains. Pre-Galleria. About the same view from 50ish floors up in Key Tower. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 16, 20204 yr While we all wait for the next construction crane to show up downtown, here's some visual highlights of the golden decade ('82-'92) of tall building construction in Cleveland. Was there any another 10 year period that saw the skyline change so much: Medical Mutual, Ohio Bell, Eaton, Sohio, North Point, Tower City, Society + Marriott, Bank One? I used to go downtown on Saturdays during this period to witness and record some of the big changes underway with a vague sense that someday in the future it might be interesting to look back at. I wasn't there to capture all of them, but I did get most of the big ones. Sohio, with the Hanna fountains in the foreground: Cleveland & Sohio: Reaching New Heights (but not really) North Point The birds of Huron Kong, just for fun Society just getting underway Moving above the next door neighbor Rear view Kong lives The Underground Garage Growing up Demolition getting underway for Ameritrust Getting up there My lame attempt at artistic photography The Birds of Superior Detail shot Probably my favorite of the bunch. Society, Marriott, Bank One, and Ameritrust (sigh) in one shot. From TT observation level High Hopes Bank One nearly topped out What is and what would never be Gone Daddy Gone Starting to taper off Only bits & pieces remaining
