What's more amazing is that in two of those photos you can just make out the gas station that's next door. And almost 90 years later it's still a gas station. Theatre goes, gas station stays. Like cockroaches they never die...

While I can't call 1985 "history" I know some of you do....

Fearing the threat of German U Boats, Submarine chasers were built in Rocky River, in the area directly opposite what is now the reservation, during the course of World War II.

Pretty cool, I never knew that

How would German U-boats get here without going through the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Welland Canal, both of which were a more than a decade away from being able to accommodate ocean-going ships with the 1959 Saint Lawrence Seaway project?

^^ Similarly related, I realized yesterday Tri-City Park in Rocky River used to be a Nike Hercules missile site during the Cold War...among other sites across NEO:

I was thinking the same thing.  Also the construction methods being used in the photo make me believe this is earlier, possibly World War I?

Just built there, not that they patrolled the great lakes.

I walked my soon to be girlfriend past that construction site once, one of the workers had been being overly aggressive in pursuit.

I had a high degree of confidence because it was a Kelly Steel Erectors crew and my mom had babysat the then owner.  ?

I've been digging into recently released (as of 1/16/2019) digital CWRU newspaper stacks (dating back to 1862):

Here's one of the best maps I've found of University Circle, pre-demolition of all the houses on Magnolia,Carlton Rd, Juniper, Mistoletoe, Bellflower, E. 115th - E.118. Murray Hill Road, the "triangle area," etc.

1970 University Circle (also note the great articles on pages 7, 8 ,9 and 10?  https://newspapers.case.edu/?a=d&d=OBS19700407-01.2.33&srpos=1&e=-------en-20--1-byDA-txt-txIN-Carlton+demolition------

It's a miracle anything survived with this level of carnage.

- There were a ton of carriage houses on Bellflower Court (not just the surviving L'Albatross and Dave's Cosmic subs) to go along with the mansions.

- Carlton Rd lost some serious mansions (and that is Cleveland city limits) As did E.115th St, which isn't talked about much.

- Ursuline College used to be in University Circle?   Same with Cathredral Latin?

- Case Tech Main was still standing (https://picclick.com/Case-School-Of-Applied-Science-Cleveland-Ohio-Oh-200390862150.html#&gid=1&pid=1)

- "VA Hospital site" and "Mt Sinai Hosptial" are both noteworthy

Plus  a couple snip-its on the survival of Hessler:

Early view of Public Square as it appeared in 1857. The first fountain in Cleveland had been installed in the center of the Square the year before. Looking east on Superior Avenue at Public Square. Forest City House is located on corner, right center.

Here's a great photo spread for the D&C Line's "City of Cleveland III" - one of the overnight steamers of 100 years ago. This excursion out of Detroit was

thought to be the ship's maiden voyage.

The new FEB building is there now.

Yep. One of its last incarnations was as Jimmy's In The Flats. Jimmy's lasted a pretty long time because I used to go there (among many of our Flats stops) in the early 1990s during my second stint in college. I recall Jimmy's lasted until the mid-2000s.

This was during the height of APCOA owner Howard Metzenbaum's first Senate campaign, where he beat John Glenn in the primary and lost to Taft.  I actually met him when my CYO day camp group came across a campaign appearance.   Later my mom was a friend of his wife.

Doesn't mean I didn't work for Ashbrook in 1982 though.   ?

This is far and away my favorite topic on here, I always find something new LOL

Ah yes, Cleveland in the 1980s... The only thing more gritty and seedier that I remember about Cleveland was the 1970s! It's why I'm amazed at what Cleveland is becoming nowadays, which is a livable city mostly on the west side). Unfortunately young people today get very impatient and easily disappointed about setbacks and slow progress. If they could imagine East Cleveland level of corruption, incompetence, violence, hopelessness and blight, that was Cleveland of the 1970s and into the 80s. Yes, it was that bad.

Even in the 1980s seemed to be a step beyond the 1970s,  which were almost certainly the low point of Cleveland history.

And now we jump back to near the beginning. Love that @TPH2 shared an actual photo of the 1830s court house seen just prior to its demise....
