Lovely building except for the cladding color. Hopefully it looks more interesting when they actually put it up.

DeWine administration, in ‘180-degree turn,’ focuses on improving Ohio highway rest areas

Posted Dec 10, 2019

By Jeremy Pelzer, cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Gov. Mike DeWine and his administration have a vision for what highway rest areas in Ohio should look like.

Lodge- or chalet-style buildings are surrounded by native grasses, well-lit parking areas and dog parks. Inside, flat-screen TVs display weather conditions, while travelers gather around kiosks with educational displays about great Ohioans like astronaut Neil Armstrong or the state’s role in the Underground Railroad. Speakers play a soundtrack of songs from famous Ohio musicians like Chrissie Hynde and Johnny Paycheck.

Random post... but Garrettsville is still recovering from the massive fire that destroyed a huge portion of its quaint downtown in 2015. The village has come a long way since then but it’s still trying to rebound.
While it’s unfortunate it’s getting national attention for a local landmark that’s struggling. It’s still great that it’s getting the attention and love that it deserves.
Tune into the Food Network’s (& Robert Irvine’s) ‘Restaurant Impossible’ on Thursday, February 9th @ 9:00 to see what happens to a town’s pride and joy.

I went to college at Hiram, and Garretsville was the nearest "town", so I spent quite a bit of time there and have been to every restaurant at least once. I was so sad when the fire happened, I'm really happy to see this happening.

Ravenna planners OK Menards’ $52 million project

That's pretty big for that area. One of my college buddies is from Ravenna and his family is pretty geeked about this. They've lost a lot of jobs from rubber plants closing and the GE plant closing since our college days in the 1980s, with the arsenal fading away long before that. Robinson Hospital is probably the biggest employer in Ravenna anymore.

Yes, it is.

For those that didn't delve deep into the article, it's more a production location for Menards for wood trusses and concrete basically. Not a retail store.

Menards wraps up land deals for Ravenna distribution and manufacturing facility

Michelle Jarboe

Home-improvement retailer Menards recently put the finishing touches on its plans for a distribution and manufacturing hub in Ravenna, on 62 acres just off state Route 88.

Family-owned Menard Inc. acquired the property, south of Maplewood Career Center and north of the Windmill Lakes Golf Club, last week, said Stephanie Savage of Jack Kohl Realty. The purchases don't appear yet in Portage County public records, but Savage said transactions with three sellers totaled $1.63 million.

Months after announcing plans to restore Riddle Block 9 to its former splendor, the building's owners unveiled their plans to the Ravenna community.

Doug and Melissa Shelton hosted a gathering Friday in one of the storefronts of the historic landmark, which recently received a Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant, issued by the National Park Service through Main Street Ravenna. A request for a community reinvestment area for the building also has been approved by Ravenna City Council and the Ravenna Board of Education, and is pending before the Ohio Development Services Agency.

Ravenna building eyed for demolition to make way for parking, landscaping downtown

As Ravenna officials move forward with plans to raze a downtown building to provide parking for nearby businesses, local historians are calling attention to the building's significance in the city's downtown.

Proposed Streetsboro City Complex could include city hall, field house, splash pad

Kaitlyn McGarvey

Record-Courier

He also talked about turning a city-owned parcel near Route 14 into a new, downtown park. The land, approximately 4.5 acres in size, was initially purchased years ago for the purpose of building a city center. Those plans are unable to go forward, Broska said Monday.

"We want to do the best that we feel is the best use of that property," he said.

Turning the land into a park would allow city children to play there without having to cross over a state highway. Developing the park could be done in tandem with the field house and splash pad projects or at a different time depending on cost, Broska told council on Monday.

I laughed at the notion of a "downtown" Streetsboro.  But actually there was at least a New England-style town square there at the intersection of 14 and 43.  No sign of any historic development.  You'd have to scuttle past a lot of drive-thru lanes to take a walk around "downtown".

Work underway to turn old church into new taproom for Suffield meadery

The team behind Suffield’s Crafted Artisan Meadery is prepared to get into the thick of construction on its new taproom and production space.

Owner Kent Waldeck is hard at work converting the former Reformed Church of Suffield into a spot for people to drink and purchase his mead. The old church, located at 1292 Waterloo Road, was originally built in 1881. It saw additions made to its original structure in both 1928 and 1959. The building changed hands a few times before it was ultimately abandoned around 2014.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear new talks regarding the expansion of the Portage County Airport as a result of this project.

This area has not been developed due to a lack of sewer and other infrastructure. Geis will provide the springboard for additional growth in this area.

Very sad to see this.  I get to go out that way frequently, and it is one of the most beautiful parts of NEO.  It'll be a shame to see it plowed under for a bunch of generic warehouses.  And since there's little housing out that way, I have to imagine we'll see some spin off junk to go with it.

Job sprawl leads to housing sprawl which leads to fewer taxpayers in older, existing communities near the core. That leads to a wider doughnut hole filled with blight, crime and pain.

It's right by an entrance to I-80, which of course combines with I-90.   That's over 5,900 miles of interstate not including 480.  This shouldn't be a surprise.

This location is about halfway between New York and Chicago

It is bittersweet having grown up in that area. The new tax revenue will really help the local and county governments and schools as the county is mostly commuter based. Additionally, the county is hurt by the fact is has over 25k acres undevelopable and non-taxable land in the former Arsenal. And, its largest employer is a state institution.

I always appreciated being able to grow up in the country and still be able to get to Akron or Cleveland in 30 minutes. The same growth that happened to St Rt 91 and St Rt 43, over the last 40 years, is now slowly moving east to St Rt 44.

I always felt like the Arsenal would be prime for economic redevelopment, and there were a few proposals floated 10+ years ago to convert it into a commercial airfield surrounded by warehouses, not unlike Rickenbacker in Columbus. Unfortunately the state and military nixed it. Would have been a real shot in the arm for the Ravenna area.

So let me get this straight... They're planning on demolishing a potentially historically significant building in a historical district (although unlike most other buildings in the district this one isn't on the National Register), and replacing it with a parking lot and a historical marker. Only in America!

It's a shame. There are a couple of parking lots, where buildings once stood, behind and to the north of this building. However, there isn't much parking along Main Street/St. Rt. 59. There is a popular restaurant right next door to this building that will greatly benefit from the new parking lot.
