Posted November 27, 200915 yr Apart from passing through once by car and once on Amtrak, I hadn't been to Cleveland in over four years, so it seemed necessary to stop there on the way home for Thanksgiving. The weather was lousy, there wasn't much time, and this doesn't do justice to, well, anything, but here are a few shots anyway. First I hung out here for 45 minutes while on a conference call. And I do mean standing under this thing after it started to rain. Then, as appetizing as this unopened package of bench kippers looked (and smelled)... ...I didn't stray from the better idea of lunch at the West Side Market. Then I just walked toward downtown. This woman was seeking photo-glory, and a dollar. The tangled foreground seemed appropriate enough for a generally gloomy scene. Actually I was starting to enjoy the feel of such a gray day in the great infrastructure playground that is this vicinity. Okay, made it downtown. All I did was walk down Euclid Ave a bit, taking only a few photos. It wasn't the most inspiring of days, and there wasn't much time anyway. What's this building's story? Still a bit of green! Back over the bridge. A shutter speed that made the train slightly blurry, but not blurry enough to look good. One last shot, downward. Some day I will pay a proper visit to Cleveland! But at this rate, maybe in 2014.
November 27, 200915 yr Nice shots! November Cleveland can be gloomy indeed, but those skyline shots over the flats are always dramatic. The building you asked about (with the skin disease) was covered with 1960s panels until recently; they've been removed to explore/begin restoration of the original brick facade, which will be awesome. Though if nearby buildings undergoing similar changes are any indication, it could take a while. More info is here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,19154.0.html
November 27, 200915 yr I think they are great photos. Even in the gloom Cleveland looks strong, industrial and dare I say prosperous! The new court house looks fantastic on days like this.
November 27, 200915 yr "Soviet" Russia? How can the world capitol of dirty money be communist (Soviet)? Now, can we compare New York City with Novosibirsk?
November 27, 200915 yr Thanks KJP..EDIT! I like this identity of Cleveland; however, there are numerous signs of continued progress in these pictures. Nice...
November 27, 200915 yr Nice, I'm glad they are removing the panels on that building to restore the facade.
November 27, 200915 yr I love the photos. I don't see gloom in them at all. I see a moody sky, the kind I've come to expect to see in the company of family on Thanksgiving day in Northeast Ohio (most T-days I've spent in Youngstown since the 1970s). Nice memories. Very rustic shots. I like that identity of Cleveland; however, there are numerous signs of continued progress in these pictures. Nice. Rustic means rural and simple, as in lacking sophistication of the city. November 27, 200915 yr ^ My mom and I were actually talking about this the other day, since I'm in Ohio for Thanksgiving from Orlando. I proposed that the gloom of winter can be turned into something ethereal and kind of cool, in the right kind of built environment. Like this shot of Prague: There's something about gloomy weather and industrialization that just don't go together.
November 27, 200915 yr "There's something about gloomy weather and industrialization that just don't go together." I wholeheartedly disagree - you've let the euphoria of Mickeylando infect your brain ;-) While it's not something I want to see day after day after day (and in January/February, I'm usually spending a week somewhere warmer/sunnier), I think there's something hauntingly beautiful about gloomy weather and industrialization. One of my favorite photos by Margaret Bourke-White demonstrates that perfectly: From the Cleveland Museum of Art, clevelandart.org And combined with the right music... November 28, 200915 yr Very good; you've captured the Cleveland I've become familiar with from visits this time of year.

One of my favorite photos by Margaret Bourke-White demonstrates that perfectly: You are right, it's arresting in small doses. But you can't live inside of it. It's like decorating your house with H.R. Giger. In my opinion, at least, you can only appreciate the macabre from a place of true beauty and security, otherwise it just becomes corrupting. I didn't know what word to use other than industrialization, I wasn't so much referring to 19th century machinery as I was just general human...crap.
November 28, 200915 yr these are great, but they drive home the reason I am making my way out of Cleveland 4 times this Nov-March (Madrid, Hawaii, Mexico, Rome/Mediterranean/northern Africa ). We budget this by having only one car and no payments and living in a gray city....
November 28, 200915 yr Man, I'm in Nashville, TN right now with the in laws and I realize who intense sprawl and bad planning can grip a city. Cleveland looks so beautiful.
