I am coming to Cleveland this weekend and want to stay somewhere cheap but still near downtown.  Any suggestions?

Hey Zach...

You could check out La Quinta or the Holiday Inn at West 150th in West Park.  Its about a 15 minute drive to Cleveland and is very close to a Rapid Station.

Your best bet is probably the Comfort Inn at Cleveland State.  It still is walkable to downtown.  What brings you to Cleveland by the way?

Someone on here once mentioned being able to Priceline the Hyatt for a really cheap deal, but I don't remember the specifics.

Been wanting to visit Cleveland for the longest time and I have all next week off work.  You wouldn't happen to be home from school this weekend are you?

I would stay at the holiday inn express or hampton downtown...they shouldnt be that bad.

I recommend staying at La Quinta; it is nice, cheap, and right next the Puritas Rapid Station.

I hear bad things about the Hampton, but try the HI express.  You should price the residence inn, the doubletree and the hilton garden inn as well; sometimes at the last minute their rooms are very affordable.  The La Quinta is a good idea also, but not if you're not into a lot of stairs as the rapid station there is under major construction and requires climbing quite a few stairs.

Residence Inn and Doubletree - Lakeside Ave are two good affordable choices.

It would really help if you defined "cheap"

there is a YMCA downtown that would suffice I suppose.

Are you coming from NYC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, San Fransisco, Miami or LA? the ritz will be "cheap" at $249 a night.

Are you coming from Ona West Virgina , Ceadar Rapids Iowa ,  Memomanie Falls Wisconsin, or Bay City Michigan (in the winter)?

Then the $49/ night days inn in Lakewood would probably be your best bet.  (no flames please, I have actually spent time in those places and know the cost of a hotel room)

Metro Detroit can mean either one really.

go here type in your dates..sort by either distance or price.

for Fri-Sun this weekend

The Ritz is $249/night

Hyatt is $135

Crowne Plaza is $92

The Holiday in is $86

The Radison is $83

All within easy walking distance of downtown < .5 miles

Anything less than a mile or so could be considered downtown  Once you are > 1 mile I would go out at least 5 or so.... and wouldn't stay in anything > 10.

It also depends on what you want to do.

Park the car until you leave?  then definitely downtown

same with drinking and NOT driving.

If you would rather save a buck or 2 and drive to get to the action then pretty much anything in Cuyahoga county is within 15-25 minute drive.

There is also a Days in in Lakewood for $48/night that is not a terrible location (cant say anything about the actual hotel) and is on a busy bus line.

The La Quinta mentioned on the Rapid line on the west side is $65  which will get you cheap accommodations with easy access to both Downtown and W. 25th that has a bunch of bars/restaurants and the Westside Market...which is a great place to visit.

You can also work priceline if that is your thing...I have seen the Hyatt for $49 a night through priceline before.

Hotwire.com is showing $54 for a 3-1/2 star hotel downtown for this weekend - I would place good money on that being the Hyatt.

Airport area shows $46 for a 3-1/2 star hotel - could be the Sheraton (walk to the rapid) or the Hilton Garden (not really transit accessible).

No unfortuantely not.  I am still down at Miami.  If you caught me the weekend of December 18-20 I would  have been able to give you a nice tour.  Ink is going to be sight seeing with me...  Let me know how it goes!

The Days Inn in Lakewood is across Clifton from my condo building. I've had friends stay there, and they say it was a clean place and fine for the low cost, but friend of them wasn't a fan of the creaky wooden floors. There are a number of 24-hour restaurants and drug stores within walking distance, and transit service runs from 5 a.m. to midnight, but is only hourly during non-rush hours..

It isn't super far to the 24/7 bus line on Detroit, either.

I would recommend the Holiday Inn Express downtown.  My parents have stayed there several times and have never been disappointed.  It's in a very nice old building and some of the rooms are very large.  You also can't beat the location IMO.  They also offer some of the cheapest parking of any hotel downtown with unlimited in/out privileges if you have a car with you.  If not, then you're only a couple blocks from Public Square and Tower City.

I've brought in clients to stay at the Holiday Inn Express and seen one of the rooms. While the view wasn't great (it looked out the back into an alley), Hootenany is right -- the rooms are large and have high ceilings too. And you might get a room with a view that's on the Euclid side, or is high up enough to see the lake over other buildings in the back. I don't think they have any food restaurant, but you're right across the street from the great restaurants in the East Fourth neighborhood, next to the Arcade which has restaurants, food court etc., and there are other restaurants, coffee shops, etc. all along Euclid Avenue and at Tower City Center on Public Square.

I always use Hotwire when I come to town, and the 3.5 hotel is usually the Hyatt....one time I got the Crowne Plaza.  I highly recommend Hotwire

ditto

What is your definition of "cheap"?  What is your price range?

Places to look for bargains on hotels.

  • Hotwire

Last time I was in town. I used Hotwire and ended up at the Hyatt for $56 a night or so and was very pleased.  Just don't park in their lot as I think it was just about $20 and you can get a significantly cheaper rate elsewhere downtown.

What do you guys think/know about the crown plaza?

decent hotel... pretty removed from things, closer to the CBD... though "pretty removed" is in the eye of the beholder.  it's about a windy cold 6 block walk to either east 4th or the WHD.

I would not recommend the Crowne, based on someone's recent stay there.  Poor room, worse customer service.

^I stayed there a little over a year ago.  It wasn't bad.  Nothing special though.  Based on location and price I would still recommend the Hyatt or Holiday Inn Express.

Honestly...HOTWIRE is your best bet  You'll save half the price and most likely get the arcade.

Has anyone tried the doubletree?

Is price the most important issue or do you care about frequent guest perks?

I toured the entire space at the Doubletree and saw several sample guest rooms.  Other than the old elevators, which need rehabbing, it's very nice and the rooms were cute.  The food at the breakfast buffet was extremely bad, but what do you expect.
