wonderful!

I didn't even know about the Hermit Club before this post.  Quite the hidden place...

Nice. It took me awhile to get through these photos. You have very good vision of what is interesting. I really like the way you frame the subject and use colors. Quality stuff!

Wonderful set!

Yup!

Nice! I really enjoyed these.

It took me over thirty minutes to get through these images. From someone who is not in Cleveland I want to thank you very much. You captured a lot of Cleveland that many miss. Keep it up please. I know you have posted before but how about some of the neighborhoods next?

Thank you Clueless, can't get any better than this.

Really nice work. I found myself smiling as I looked through these; you have a very good eye for capturing the less-common views of a city that's much-photographed by UO forumers. I like your attention to architectural details.

wow.  great set...

(mayday I believe someone just threw a glove at you )

Well done!

Great glamour shots of the City.  A little different strategy than I am used to seeing in these threads.  But certainly nothing wrong with focusing on all that is grand about the city's core.

From where did you take the shot of the WHD looking toward the Justice Center and then on to the RRHOF and the Lake.  Some rooftop on W. 9th?

^Looks to be from the top or near the top of Crittenden Court.  I have a very similar view out of my window, but this shot appears to be a bit higher.  I didn't think you could get on the roof, but maybe he managed somehow.

Fabulous.  Composition, subject matter, etc. all excellent.  Thank you.

this was a wonderful tour -- thanks!

I just got home and this is the first time that I've checked on this thread since I posted it yesterday...I just had absolutely not one free minute at work.

I'm glad that everybody likes this post. I thought I'd wait on posting it until early December when the gray skies and leaf-less trees can start to get a little boring.

MayDay is the master of Cleveland photography...I'm a novice...I've already told him that.

Yes from the top of Crittenden.

Also, I was really just focusing on architectural detail, for the most part.

SfBob, Have you not seen my Broadway/Slavic Village thread, Asiatown thread or Midtown thread (not so much a "neighborhood" anymore, I know...but it could be)?  :-) I guess I'll have to do OC, Tremont, Little Italy, etc. LOL

The Hermit Club is a gem. It is truly a hidden place. I almost wish it was right out on the main drag because it's such a neat place.

Very enjoyable tour! Thanks!!!

Great stuff...a welcome visual change from the Atlanta cityscapes I've been seeing lately.

Approves!

You have a great eye of a great city! Not so Clueless after all! :)

Well thank you very much KJP.

I prefer to use the phrase "humbly confident" and I sincerely think you should too - sure, I've spent a lot of time taking photos of Cleveland (11 years), paying absurdly-geeky attention to things like angles, lighting, time of day, weather, etc., and yeah I manage to get good shots, and a few here and there are photos that make me think "d@mmmn, I guess I do get some good ones!", and most of all I've been fortunate to get access to places that not many others have. Anyway, maybe the angle/lighting/whatever wasn't the best, but I know that what I saw in that moment was enough to make me stop and say "THAT gets my attention". I know I post a lot of photo threads but there's nothing I'd love more than to see what others see in this city - especially when it's clear they "get it". :-)

For example:

Fixed bridges, movable bridges; fixed transit, mobile transit...

d.jpg

It's saying something when I'm wondering "where was this?" - and I realize it's an angle in the Warehouse District I've never stumbled upon - never mind the parking, the way the buildings create a interesting patchwork:

It doesn't get more iconic than this:

r.jpg

For this shot, you'd have to know the stories behind each building - but if you don't, you have a great shot of Public Square to Playhouse Square:

As you said, the Hermit Club is truly a gem:

And when you can make some of the ugliest buildings in Cleveland look shiny/sleek/appealing, you *know* you caught a great moment:

Yes. I guess I pay "absurdly-geeky attention" (lol) too to different aspects of a possible picture.

Living downtown allows me to capture things at different times of day, or with any number of backgrounds (sunny,gray,cloudy,dusk,etc.). Almost like a full-time "access" to different shots.

I did get lucky on many of these though...most of the street-level shots were taken one late afternoon while walking around. Things like the orange-colored trees against the orange seats of Cleveland Browns stadium... I couldn't have ordered that up any better. Or the bus that just happened to drive in front of the Greyhound Station as I walked by. Or the two silver/gray cars in front of the slate-gray colored Statler Apts.

Thanks for the "Iconic" comment. I got that shot as I was getting carried away with ideas for different angles.

Great set. Where is the "Hermit Club" by the way?

Whoa, I just used bing maps to figure where that pic of the ware house district was taken from. I never probably have stood there before. Great eye.

I also discovered there are two courtyard in the middle of the St. Clair - w.9th - Johnson court block. They look green from the Bing maps birdseye view, either intentionally or just overgrown. Has anybody ever been back there? Photo assignment possibly?

You're on the internet and you ask that?  Lawd.

You can actually get a great look at those courtyards from the interior atrium of the Hoyt Block building atrium (which is open during normal business hours).  They were created a long time ago, I believe by the George Worthington Co for employees.  During the mid 90's HWD cleaned them up a bit and actually ran Shakespeare plays from in there.  There has been some exploratory work done in looking into converting the warehouses on the south end of Johnson Ct (former Worthington Co. warehouses) to residential with street level retail turning johnson ct into something like east 4th st, and full restoration of the courtyards.  Certainly nothing imminent yet, but a great plan.

Back...back...back....back in the day there was access to this area off of St. Clair.

There used to be parties for the "grown and sexy" as this "secret" roaming club that had access.  If you didnt' know how to get there you couldn't get in.  Johnson Court has/had some secret doors that lead back there.  They would put up a big tent, speakers, the whole nine...then the next day no evidence anything ever happened there.

oh I like that plan for Johnson court. McCleveland how do you sleep at night with all that information swirling around in your head. As for the courtyard I would actually have to be in downtown during business hours instead of stuck in Akron. Although I can see the very nice restoration of the building on the SW corner of Mill and High street from my window.

As a sidenote my former landlord bought into the bar Wish (located in Johnson court alley) in 2002. He lost his @ss, couldn't of happened to a nicer guy.

^^Hmmmm I don't remember that.

But on a much more boring note...I remember when Cleveland Chophouse had an outdoor patio off the back of their restaurant, it was perched out into this courtyard. I wonder if that is still there?

It was a party for the fabulous and gay!  Hint...hint!

Aaahhhh the 80s.

I bet if you shut your eyes and listen close enough, you can still hear New Order, Ministry, Depeche, etc.etc. in the WD walls.

That was something you would hear at gawd awful Keys.  Not the house music parties.

^^ I used to hang at the Altar House in the early 90's.  Lots of New Order and Ministry!  Loved that place.  I interrupted one of the guys from Front 242 there, as he was hitting on some girl, for an autograph.  How precocious of me

  • 2 weeks later...

Beautiful pics
