Please.  keep it real man!

I must be the only one, but I don't think Chick Fil A is really that good.  I've had it a few times since we got one on UC's campus (although it is a Chick Fil A "Express", if that makes any difference).  I'll take a Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich over Chick Fil A any day.

After a night of partying in Koreatown, I always have the DD pull through the Jack in the Box on Highland, just south of Santa Monica Blvd.  Large jalapeno poppers, large mozz sticks and large curly fries always hit the spot at 2 am.  It's vegetarian (some of the few things I can eat at a fast food place) but certainly not healthy. If I have to do fast food, I guess this is it. You can't go 4 blocks in this town without hitting a JITB.

I liked JITB's chili cheese fries.  That place is seriously cheap.

When I lived in LA (actually lived in Koreatown in my last year living in LA), I'd hit that Jack in the Box regularly after clubbing...it's a tad north of Santa Monica, though...right by Fountain.  Mozzarella sticks, Bacon Ultimate Cheesburgers, Sourdough Jacks were all favorites...and no, it's not health food..lol.

I bet you were fun to be around 35 minutes later.

My wife and I tried Five Guys a week and a half ago.  It was pretty good, I think...my wife was less than impressed, though.

To me, it comes across as a more "family friendly" mix of two West Coast chains, Tommy's and In-N-Out.

Chick-Fill-A is damn good, though.  I really like that their stuff is relatively healthy (by fast-food standards).

Five guys is hands down my favorite burger (FF Burger, that is). Moxie burger is the best overall. I like excess! My wife ate at B-spot two weeks ago, and said she likes the 5 guys burger better. I haven't eaten at B-spot.

Say what you want about the religious aspect of Chik-a-fil (as my wife's grandmother used to call it), but they make the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Maybe it's the religious zeal that makes it taste so good. And the folks over at Beachwood place could not be nicer or more accomodating. I've even used them to cater parties, and they deliver to the house.

I can't believe you folks are talking about Kennedy Fried Chicken. I didn't even think they still existed. I used to hit them pretty hard when I partied in ghetto-a$$ Poughkeepsie after High School. They had the highest grease content. Good for soaking up booze at 3am.

CDM, next time you want ribs in Cleveland, hit up Whitmores. But only the one on Kinsman. All the locations are owned by different family members. I'm friends with the Kinsman Whitmores. They're the nicest ones! ;-)

What do you have a psionic link to UO? I've never seen anyone respond faster!

I'm married with 3 kids. Who do I have to impress? Gassy is just a bonus.

You and KOOW are so funny to me!

Impress?  How about your wife?  Hell she bore you three kids.  She let you have sex with her (at least three times) ...give the woman a break!

She knew what she was getting when she married me. If she doesn't like it now, well,  I say hard cheese!

Now I see why she's at Saks so often!

Watched the repeat of fried foods in America last night on the travel channel.  Time for a road trip.  Fried chicken in New Orleans, fried burgers in Memphis (same oil since 1920 or something), fried hot dogs in Jersey, fish n chips in Brooklyn along with fried twinkies for dessert!  Road trip or heart attack #2!!

You have to catch the fried food "favorites" show on The Food Network. It's were their hosts list their favorite of a type of food. Somebody listed Deep fried bacon. And it actually looked really really good. So you will probably want to add that to your list.

On a side note I tried to induce a heartattack Saturday night on my tour of the westsides glamour spots (Hooples, Harbor inn, Happy dog). I had a hoople burger with ham and gyro meat for dinner and then a hot dog around 1:30 with 3 different kinds of mustard, greens, bacon, chili and whatever else I checked off in drunken haze. Tater tots with cheez whiz too! That hot dog must have been magical because I had no hangover on Sunday.

You should have a coronary and be "backed up", if you know what I mean!

They had the chicken-fried bacon too!

Oh I realized that I had a typo in my last post. The burger had salami and gyro meat, not ham. I had them throw the gyro meat on because they were out of the ham that was supposed to go on it. I was three X-mas ales into the night. It seemed like a good idea...

Hmm, chicken fried bacon? That sounds even better. The bacon I saw was deep fried in light batter.

The old fast food chains are modernizing their appearances in an attempt to compete with the newcomers like Chipotle and Panera, but it's too bad that they have all gone to the same generic EIFS look. At least there was a distinctive look to the old McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bells, and Pizza Huts. You could remove the logos from these four buildings and no one would be able to tell which is which:

^ Many of these chains are using metal panels. They get cheap rates on the material and installation because they make deals with suppliers to roll out the upgrades to large numbers of stores at a time. In some retrofits they actually just plop the metal panels and aluminum framing directly atop the existing walls. With EIFS they'd have to worry about drainage and use several different subcontractors for framing, waterproofings, EIFS, etc. The metal panel installers can show up and retrofit a store in a couple weeks, with minimal coordination with other trades.

taestell[/member] Good point. Those buildings are interchangeable, almost. But IMO that's not a bad thing, makes it easy to re-brand them as whatever when something goes out of business. So we don't end up with this anymore:

http://usedtobeapizzahut.blogspot.com/

Also, I will say that visually those buildings are a substantial improvement over current fast food outlets, at least from the exterior.

But that Arby's parking lot pictured above needs help.

What's the deal with McD's having right side drive-thrus? Is that in Manchester or is the pic reversed?

Personally, I think these new styles are just fine. There's more value for these big brands in upgrading their image than using the shape of a building as branding.

^ Haha, I snuck a picture of an Australian McDonald's in there and wondered if anyone would notice. Their American designs are a bit more distinctive and the Australian one fit better with the point of my post.

what the heck? that is so strange that they are all moving toward looking more alike than distinctive.

i guess that explains the mystery as to why this chinatown 24hr goth mcdonalds i saw on canal st is all in black:

It makes the buildings easier to sell if they're just a box afterward.

I had to go to the Kenwood Towne Centre today and I was surprised by how many vacant fast food buildings surrounded the mall. I passed former Burger King, KFC, and Taco Bell buildings (all now vacant) on my drive. Burger King also closed their Pleasant Ridge location about a year ago. Have we finally reached the tipping point where so many people are choosing better quality dining options, such as fast casual chains, that fast food can no longer survive except off of rural highway exits?

Taco Bell's cantinas move to downtown and being the only fast food in the CBD shows to me they at least 'get it' and still appeal to a segment of the population. But yes it does seem like there are too many restaurants and the families who stopped and picked up fast food for dinner aren't as prevalent. Also that KFC on Kenwood never had a drive thru making it much less convenient.

I also think the food network and myriad daytime cooking shows along with the hello fresh, blue apron etc. food services have had a big affect on people wanting to diy dinner and not get unhealthy crap from fast food.

McDs seems to do a monster business where I live in the inner ring of DC burbs. One BK closed for an apartment complex in Falls Church  but nothing else has really shut down in my area.

Also I’d argue some fast casual places aren’t better qualify or all that fast either although they are more expensive. The wave of new fast causal seems to be slowing down or maybe it’s me.
