24 hours after the first big snowstorm of the season dumped ten inches of the white stuff on the city, I had to run out and grab some groceries. I decided to bring my camera along and grab a few shots. Sorry for the point-and-shoot photo quality... I don't have the equipment or know-how for good nighttime shots.

Looking up the stairs that go from Overlook Terrace to Fort Washington Avenue.

185th Street, with Bennett Park on the left. Bennett Park is the highest natural elevation in Manhattan.

The neighborhood is known for its collection of beautiful art deco apartment buildings, many of which feature striking entrances. Here's one on 187th Street.

Most apartment buildings have set up their own Christmas and Hanukkah displays in their lobbies. This building at 570 Fort Washington Avenue has a particularly beautiful lobby.

The Fort Washington Avenue entrance to the 190th Street subway entrance. One can also use the elevators at this entrance to access Bennett Avenue at the bottom of the hill, which is where I live.

Going down the steps to the subway entrance. The lights in the background are from the buildings on the other side of the steep valley that splits the neighborhood in two.

The Bennett Avenue entrance to the subway. This is where I grab the train every weekday morning.

Neat shots; you certainly don't need to apologize for any of them.

It looks like a visually-pleasing neighborhood; I love NYC's abundance of gorgeous Art Deco.

Thanks... These photos are from the enclave known as Hudson Heights, which is west of Broadway and north of 181st Street. The area in general is quite beautiful.

Unfortunately, the rest of Washington Heights in general isn't nearly as photogenic... I live right on the border between Hudson Heights and the low-income Dominican ghetto of Washington Heights. The front of my building faces a quiet wooded hillside, but the back of my building (and my apartment) faces a noisy nightlife strip on Broadway that's increasingly becoming a hotbed of gang activity.

Thanks!

I wouldn't say all of WH is a ghetto, as there are some gorgeous parts.  Also, to say that a section of that neighborhood is becoming a hotbed of gang activity is moot, as WH has been ground zero for Gangs & drugs since the 80's.

The Trinitarios run that area.  At one point Audobon was the dividing line and people fought to keep that area from being overrun.  People they gave up and moved, and the Platano's (Dominicans) moved in.

The police used to crackdown on a block, then the drug users would move to the next.  The bridges that feed directly into the neighborhood make drug distribution easy.

Thats where the guy tried to take my bag, right on 168 street.

Nice to see a part of New York that isn't as often featured.

You can say that again.  if it's not below 86 street it's not picke up by the major media outlets.

two big thumbs up for nightshots, you are inspiring me to do more of those!
